SPECIAL FEATURES

 • Suppressor System to disguise shot location.

 • Long Range direct-fire weapon.
Strengths:

 • Suppressor System: The suppressor system prevents most of the energy of the railgun firing from escaping and being detected by enemy sensors. This system works by using a variety of stealth systems to hide the burst of energy from the firing. The entire rifle is coated in sensor-deflecting spray which helps to reduce its sensor signature at range, the only time the weapon should be used. It also has an array of light absorbing cells around the tip of the rifle that can be triggered when the rifle is shot while the suppression system is activated. The system also contains a baffler and energy sinks to disguise and drain away the energy released by the firing of the rifle. It is not a perfect system, it can’t be since the railgun round needs to exit the barrel. What the system can do is hide most of the energy, draining and disguising the energy and sensor signatures of the rifle which makes it much harder to locate. The system does require a period between shots to recharge and prepare adds a long cooldown of the firing of the rifle when the suppressor is activated.

 • Longe Range: A sniper rifle is a long range weapon designed to bring death and destruction from a distance well out of the range of retaliation.

 • Deadly: With all the power of a railgun the Jackal can to fire a shot capable of blowing its way through its target with a high penetrative power. The rifle is designed to pierce through light and medium armour, it's design was only limited by it's ability to penetrate the heaviest of armours, and even a shot from the rifle could leave you severely shaken up.
Weaknesses:

 • Low Rate of Fire: Like any railgun, the electromagnets need to charge between shots, this its very nature this necessitates a slower rate of fire than most other weapons, a trade-off the designers were more than happy

 • Recoil: The power of the railgun also leave it with a wicked recoil, which is capable of hurting it’s user if the gun is improperly braced when fired.

 • Limited Ammo: Because of the stresses induced in the projectile by the significant electromagnetic forces it is coming under normal bullets will just come apart in the gun. Instead, the Jackal requires a solid metal round of a significant size. This allows the projectile to maintain its shape despite the forces acting on it. This is important to allow the projectile to stay in a cylinder, focusing its momentum on a narrower area. The downside of this though is that the cartridge packs contain only a limited supply of ammunition because of the larger than normal calibre.

 • Close Range: The long barrel and charge time of the rifle mean that as enemies close on you it becomes less and less effective. And at close range, the rifle is nearly useless, it’s far too easy for an opponent who gets close to you to knock the weapon out of the way, especially if you were so focused on lining up a shot they managed to get the drop on you, leaving you prone and unable to bring your weapon to bear in time.

 • Hard to hide: Unlike a standard blaster rifle with could be tucked away to some degree the size of the Jackal means that it couldn’t be easily hidden, anyone spotting the weapon would be able to tell exactly what it was.
DESCRIPTION

When in war the ability to strike your target from long range or to strike your target silently has always been a boon to the soldier and a source of great fear. How do you defend against an enemy who can hit you from across the battlefield without any warning? Hit them first. Of course, the sniper rifle wasn’t just a tool of the soldier, it was also the tool of the assassin and even used by those seeking to drop a force user safely. The sniper rifle though was a staple of any military armoury and as a weapons manufacturer, Locke and Key Mechanics had set its engineers the task of developing an entry to the marketplace. While they could go in any direction, they chose to develop a sniper rifle built off a railgun firing physical projectiles. The stopping power of a railgun was not to be trifled with but that wasn't the only reason they chose a railgun over a blaster sniper. A sniper’s biggest weakness is in the very bolt that provides it with its power, the high powered shot can reveal the location of the sniper allowing people to avoid the shot and to come after the shooter. However, there is no bright bolt of energy to track when a rail gun is fired, just a single energy discharge. Even that discharge can be seen by sensors as a way to locate the sniper, to that end the Jackal comes equipped with a suppression system which is able to absorb this energy discharge. This allows the sniper rifle to maintain it’s stealth profile, at the cost of an extremely long wait between shots for the system to drain off the energy.

The Suppression System:

The Jackal’s suppression system is the standout feature of the sniper rifle, which when activated is able to hide much of the energy released by the firing of the rifle at the cost of an extended cooldown between shots. This system works by using a variety of pre-existing stealth systems to hide the burst of energy released when the rifle fires. The entire rifle is coated in sensor-deflecting spray which helps to reduce its sensor signature at range, the only range the weapon should be used at. It also has an array of light absorbing cells around the tip of the rifle that can be triggered when the rifle is shot while the suppression system is activated, the cells create a small dark field which hides the visible flash from the firing. The darkfield replaces the rifle's flash with a 'flash' of darkness, which is much harder to spot. The system also contains a baffler and energy sinks to disguise and drain away the energy released by the firing of the rifle.

The Suppression system is not a perfect system, it can’t be since the railgun round needs to exit the barrel. What the system can do is hide most of the energy, draining and disguising the energy and sensor signatures of the rifle which makes it much harder to locate. The system does require a period between shots to recharge and prepare adds a long cooldown of the firing of the rifle when the suppressor is activated.

Undoubtedly, this is a powerful weapon, probably most equivalent to an anti-material rifle in real life. We have to be careful about describing damage for this though, as otherwise we start dictating damage to opposing writers. Because of that, I recommend changing the last sentence somewhat. I recommend using words like "is designed to" or "can" to show the intent of its capabilities, but not box other writers into their reactions.

I don't quite understand this part. Does this system mask the energy build-up from the weapon having a built up a charge to fire? Or is this hiding something about the actual launch of the projectile?

First, thanks for reviewing the sub :)

I have edited the deadly strength as requested.

Regarding the suppression system, it is designed to hide both the build-up, but most importantly the actual moment of fire. The build-up is primarily a charging of the capacitor's built into both rails, but the moment of firing generates a current between them which provides the shot it's force. It's not a real-life image but the video below is from the transformer's movie:

The suppressor is designed to collect most of the energy released during the firing so that the location of the rifle can't be pinned down easily.

Thank you, this looks good now.

I'd recommend looking at, incorporating, or otherwise referencing baffleweave, baffler, sensor deflector spray,or false energy signature projectors as possibilities to get this effect. It would not surprise me if there is another canon technology that could do something similar.
