Private It's a Beautiful Night

Sadow District,
Jutrand

There was seldom a nicer evening on Jutrand. The night was bright and clear, lit by an orange moon hanging heavy in the sky above. A cool breeze promising more temperate weather had pushed away the smog from the distant factories, and the shopfronts of the Sadow District's famous boardwalk cast the street with warm, inviting light.

Kirie was on her way home from another evening of research, heading home having stayed a little later than usual. She'd been sucked into a textbook, tracing its diagrams with her fingers and doing her best to memorise the passages of mental exercises intended to sharpen her mental acuity and ease her connection to the Force. She'd been engrossed, and the hour had grown late, but Kirie wasn't worried. She'd called ahead, told Quinn she was leaving. A shuttle was meeting her a few streets away. Besides, she'd done this a dozen times before.

She made her way down a set of marble steps leading down from the study hall. The street was largely empty, save for a few hurried people on their way home. Sadow largely closed up at night during the week, the working population and Sith returning to their respective residential districts. Kirie would not be travelling far, only a few blocks to the expensive estates reserved for the highest echolon Sith.

And their servants.

On a whim, Kirie decided to cut through the park where she had met Lysander von Ascania Lysander von Ascania , circling the lake to reach the opposite entrance. It wasn't large, and would shave a few minutes off her walk. Kirie admired the reflection of the cloudless sky against the still water, and quickened her step, eager to get home and tell Quinn about what she'd learned during the day's studies. All was still, and quiet. A rare reprieve from Jutrands urgent bustle. Kirie gave a yawn and a small tired sigh as she rounded the bend of the lake and began to trudge the last 50 or so paces to the cobbled street that was her destination, where the streetlights illuminated every crevice with an amber glow, and her chartered speeder sat idly.

A short ride and she'd be home, fixing herself a warm drink, and falling asleep in Quinn's lap on the couch as they watched some holoflick. She couldn't wait.

Jutrand... It'd been a short while since the young Sangnir had returned to her homeworld. Why had she done so? Maybe while exploring the wider galaxy she had gotten just a little homesick for a place she largely considered a hell, at least... That was her impression before she was being kept on planets like Malachor V. There were planets out there that were so much more hostile and terrible than the one she was born on.

The pale woman had decided that her usual dark robes might just draw a little more attention than she'd have preferred, and so she had donned more casual attire befitting of a late night walk in the quieter districts. She had her hands tucked into the front pockets of a zipped up grey jacket that was lightly cuffed with fur at the sleeves and collar, a comfortable and warm fit that didn't draw much attention.

The Sadow District was one she at first thought she'd avoid. The last time she was here she had gained a taste for nobility, for highborn blood, and so she had started hunting and killing in her naivety as a young freshly made Sangnir. Her killings back then were what got her noticed, what spun her life into so much chaos and led her down the path she now tread.

But it didn't seem she was alone tonight. Her gaze, which sought heat in that moment, saw the pulsing glow of orange, yellow, and red in the cold blue hues of the park. Someone was nearing... Someone with warm blood, she could see them far before normal sight could; a true hunter's sight. She paused in her steps for she stood in the path the figure appeared to be heading towards.

Valaine hadn't anticipating hunting tonight, especially in this particular district, but as she saw the nearing woman she felt a deep surging desire within her as the temptation of blood called...

Her constricted narrow pupils rounded and widened as slowly her innate thermal vision faded; replaced with the colors and shades of the standard visible spectrum once again. Now she could take in the finer details of the person coming towards her more clearly out of the dark. She had almost expected nobility, highborn maybe, but this didn't seem quite right. Perhaps a retainer? A servant girl? Still, she looked clean enough, that was enough for the Sangnir's palette in that moment.

With a gentle sigh she started to boldly move towards Kirie with steady trudging steps, it was a direct path, a confident and confrontational one. Kirie would no doubt see this pale girl walking straight towards her with tired grey eyes focused intently. She wanted something, that was clear, it was just a question of what.

Kirie didn't take much notice of the woman at first. Another person cutting through the park at night. A noble's daughter or a staffer who had to stay back late. Kirie treated her like she did all of the dozen or so passers-by she had seen on her walk home that night: she kept her head down. Only, when she had walked past those other people with her eyes downcast, Kirie had not felt the twinge of unease she felt now.

Why now were the hairs on her neck standing up? Why did her skin crawl with goose pimples? Kirie had learned the hard way not to ignore these signs. The churning of fear in her belly could be mere nerves, but it could also be a more esoteric sense of danger, borne, as Quinn had explained to her on Weik, of her nascent connection to the Force. Kirie risked a glance at the woman, who had entered the park, fully expecting to see her walking past her with the polite distance of two night-walkers.

But she was looking right at her.

She was walking towards her.

Kirie slowed. Fear flowed through her like a wash of cold water, leaving her limbs stiff and leaden. Kirie generally considered herself a brave person, but being approached by a stranger out here while she was alone was not something that filled her with confidence. Her pace slowed, and she stood still. The only sound was the lapping of the lakewater, Kirie's breathing, and the oh-so-soft trudging of the approaching figure.

She looked around, wondering what she should do. The woman was directly blocking the near

Kirie raised her hands, part defensively and part so she could sign. From its place on her belt, her small protocol droid floated up over her shoulder to translate.

'Hello.' Kirie signed, hoping the woman would at least stop to reply.
'Did you need something?'

Valaine noted that Kirie had stopped in her tracks, was she standing her ground in the face of assured confrontation? A light smirk of amusement appeared on the Sangnir's face. She walked all the way up to the woman and paused just a few feet away from her as she kept her hands tucked into her pockets. A light tilt of her head was given at the gestures of her signing and her eyes shifted to the small droid to read the translation.

A soft huff came from Valaine's lips as she turned her tired eyes back towards Kirie. "Mute, are you? Well, that works out well I guess." she commented in a tone that was soft and light, she was thankful that at the very least she wasn't going to be dealing with someone that might scream for help, though with how empty the park was now it was doubtful it would have drawn attention anyway.

"But, yeah, I do need something." she continued as she tilted her chin up just slightly as she regarded Kirie. She was taking her measure, observing every aspect of her, and by the scent of her blood she knew she was more a commoner rather than the nobles she had expected. "Your blood." she stated plainly, "You can try to run if you want, but I can promise you that you won't outpace me.". Her tone was confident, arrogant in fact, that Kirie was just going to be another helpless meal for her.

With that spoken however the Sangnir reached a hand to try and catch Kirie's wrist with her own if she made to reply with her signing once more, to clench tightly around it with a grip that would not release her. The intent was clear; she was going to drag this poor woman aside and feast on her blood, like she had done to so many others before her...
