Is There Life On Duro?

JN-4 hugged the cloak back to her chest and stood still as he said his goodbye. There never had been reason to say goodbye in the Institute, but she knew the term. Partly, the anxiety of coping with a new arrival, a stranger, was passing as he was leaving, but also there was a slight hint of sadness to see him go. He was a good man, a nice and gentle man, and he didn’t shout.

She mirrored his gesture – a salute, and wave – and watched him go in a loud and very fast speeder which made her jump slightly.

Through the haze on the ground, she followed Asemir as far as she could, and it looked like he was in the far distance. JN-4 didn’t move a muscle, except blinking. The breeze lapped at the cloak and tickled her ponytail to one side. What would she do now? Her hands tightened on the bars and water, and she was excited to go back to her den and ration them out for a few days, and talk to him through the stars.

It wasn’t long before a ship rose from the surface and took off into the atmosphere until it was nothing but a dot, and then simply gone. JN-4 craned her head back to watch the solider fly away in a ship that was larger than the troop carrier she had crashed landed on. It looked big and strong and very dangerous. Almost like Asemir could have been until he showed her his gentle face.

JN-4 let out a sigh, nodded, and turned to walk back to the boulder, and push her way back into the institute and vanish once more. As the light faded when she stepped inside, she wondered if she’d actually see Asemir again.

To Be Continued…
