STRENGTHS

• Iron Back - Getting its name from this strength, the Ironback has powerful defences for a corvette, making it more like a pocket cruiser in its intended use in a battle, even though it would take several to stand up to a single cruiser in the line of battle. It can use its flak batteries to throw up a screen of flak at a location in space rather than the usual proximity fuses to protect from missile and torpedo salvos in addition to their usual anti-fighter role.
• Sucker Punch - The armaments of the Iron Back are more in line with a light Frigate, and its missile pods give it a surprising amount of damage potential

WEAKNESSES

• Underpowered Engines - The three ion drives do not provide enough thrust for the Ironback to keep pace with the standard corvette, nor are they as maneuverable as one.
• Back Breaker - The engines, command centers, and reactor are connected to the primary hull containing the hangers and primary weapons arrays by a narrow spine and two support spurs, an unfortunate side effect of the two halves of the ship being manufactured in separate facilities and final assembly at yet another.

DESCRIPTION

The Ironback came about from The Soverigen Dawn's need for a ship of the line and inability to build, crew, and maintain anything larger than a corvette at scale. Rather than trying to maintain a very small fleet of outside cruisers and frigates at great expense, through Nomad Forgeworks, a design for a corvette that could be used in small groups to stand up to a cruiser through strong defences and forcing it to split its firepower.

To keep the construction of the Ironback secret, like all Nomad Forgeworks projects, the ship is assembled in pieces, culminating in the forward hangar assembly and weapons arrays being finished in one location, the engineering and control sections constructed in another, before both are shipped to a third secret location to be connected into a single functional ship along with having the weapons and other off the shelf components attached.
