Private Interstellar Blues- Empire Welcome

Pockets of unfathomably distant light shown through the dark blackness of the void that enveloped the viewport in front of Jusik. Rows of chairs, unicolored in a grayish tone sat unfilled around white tables. It was only 0230 Much too early for most, besides an occasional technician or trooper on guard duty, but no one seemed to be on break that night. His insomnia had become a bit of a feature lately, a constant companion as the weeks drug on. Recent events had been hard on everyone he'd known or cared for.

Numbing. He couldn't even remember if he shaved if he didn't touch his own face in those moments.

His squadron had seen fifty percent casualties in defence of their own space. Insanity. He'd written more holonotes in a month than he had the whole year. Fresh faced recruits had already shown up, as unaware as he'd once been of what awaited. A wire smile found it's way across his lips, he remembered the strange fascination he'd felt as he sighted a target from thousands of meters above. Looking straight down at his target though a small electronic sight. Then there was the twisted wreckage, lost comrades, and a potential one way ticket to the force. His veterans shared his misgivings and the Lieutenant had done his best to help them through it. Those with families were particularly affected. Davin couldn't blame them.

The Navy was his family. The Starfighter Corp his home, his squadron his children. Somewhere along the way he'd grown comfortable with silence and his thoughts. Davin wasn't sure how that made him feel.

He glanced at his watch. 0235.

Fantastic. He thought to himself as he continued gazing listlessly into the endless parade of star systems. Millions of worlds. An unbelievable amount of life, their own struggles a microcosm of a grander, eternal conflict.

That helped him as he thought of his lost flight members.
