Name: Insulian Colossal Crab
Designation: Non-sentient
Homeworld: Pax Insul
Language: N/A
Average height of adults: 2.8 meters
Skin color: Blue, Grey, or Brownish-red.
Hair color: N/A
Breathes: Type I
Strengths:
Outer Shell: With a tough, rocky exoskeleton similar in durability to durasteel, the Colossal Crab is able to withstand mighty blows and physical punishment.
Quite Quick: Despite its large size and rather uninspiring appearance, the Colossal Crab can move at an upwards of 25km/h.
Intelligent: Whilst it may not look bright, these crabs actually have a complex form of communication and can even engage in very basic problem-solving.
Weaknesses:
Mostly Blind: As a mostly nocturnal creature, the Colossal Crab has poor visual feedback and its acute sense of smell is easily overwhelmed by strong scents.
Can’t Swim: As a terrestrial crab, this particular species is unable to swim and will drown if submerged in water for too long.
Soft Underbelly: Although soft isn’t an accurate description, the underbelly of a Colossal crab is far thinner and more vulnerable than the rest of its exoskeleton.

Distinctions: Male specimen tend to have dominant claws on one side or the other, making it possible for one to be left-clawed and another to be right-clawed. Female specimen have slightly larger claws on average, but are still smaller than a male’s dominant claw but are more precise when used in self-defense. Another distinction is their unusual movement patterns, a Colossal Crab is capable of moving each leg independently to maximize speed and overall mobility, making their movements frighteningly accurate and able to quickly change course without overshooting. As well these crustaceans are known for their acute sense of smell which can track prey at up to 6km away at the cost of poor eyesight. In order to grow, they molt and exhibit similar behaviors to other crustaceans of their kind.

Armour Rating: 7 (main) | 3 (underbelly)

Average Lifespan: Indeterminate. they do not ‘die’ from age, their physiology has allowed them to live at an upwards of hundreds, to even a thousand years before succumbing to disease, or other natural causes. However; most specimen only live for 60-80 years on average due to the perilous nature of the world.
Races: N/A
Estimated Population: Hundreds, but only located on Pax Insul.

Diet: Insulian Colossal Crabs are omnivorous and will eat just about anything that’s organic. Due to their tenacious digestive system, they can break down just about anything that’d be ‘poisonous’ to most species. These crabs will break through the tough layers of their food source using their claws, before consuming the soft interior which they can slowly digest and sustain themselves for the next few weeks before they need to feed again.
Communication: Dancing, waving of claws, and banging their claws on rocks and such.
Culture: Despite being non-sentient, it would be improper to say they have no culture. Although it’s not developed scientifically, the crabs are very social creatures who commonly live in colonies of up to six to seven of these creatures. During the mating season, nearby colonies will meet together and breed, creating new colonies which will spread out all over their islands. Breeding, however, only occurs once every few decades; what decides when they mate remains a mystery.
Technology level: N/A

General behavior: Colossal Crabs are normally docile creatures who tend to avoid contact with outsiders, even of their own species. Despite this they are also fiercely defensive and will give their lives to defend their colonies, making them rather skilled fighters for a non-sentient species. Furthermore as social creatures they tend to communicate frequently, dancing over mates and are even known to play simple games with each other. During the day these crabs usually burrow in the soft soil and sand of the islands and at night they’re very active and will move long distances in search of food. Another unique behavioral trait is that they bond with members of their colonies, forming familial relationships. From time-to-time they’ll even form symbiotic relationships with other species, as long as it benefits them.

History: Not much is known about their origin, but the species is likely ancient and has probably been on Pax Insul longer the the unknown sentients who inhabited it before disappearing. Despite their age as a species, they remain in small numbers due to their unusual mating habits. They also don’t appear to have been a significant focal point for any ruins on the island, no carvings or markings of any kind can be found about them; leading to the possibility that they may very well be an invasive species.

Notable Player-Characters: N/A
Intent: To create a unique species to inhabit Pax Insul.
