SPECIAL FEATURES

The relevance and need for a weapon such as this were revealed during the training of new Death Trooper units for service in the Galactic Empire. It was found that during covert operation scenarios, utilizing market available technology for the 'opposition', the effects of flashbangs and simple smoke grenades were being diminished by the increasing availability of hud systems and scanners. When squads of Death Troopers raided a room, their use of flashbangs and smoke grenades caught their opponents off-guard but thanks to the systems at the opposition's disposal, did little past their initial disorienting effect.

To combat this, Imperial Advanced Weapons Development set about creating a new type of chemical agent that could offer both theatric distraction and effective, long-term disorientation. At first, only a handful of toxic and hallucinogenic options were chosen as candidates but eventually the list of substances was expanded to include vision obscuring crystals and colored smokes. The eventual decision was made to utilize all three components.

When deployed, the canister will use several mini-repulsors to propel itself along the floor area of the deployment zone. While this occurs, the middle of the cannister will spring open to release a thick, colored smoke that is laced with several chosen substances. The Ryll Kor, which has been ground to a light crystalline form capable of being carried by the smoke, absorbs all light spare for light in the ultraviolet range. This gives the colored smoke, which is laced with a glittering powder, a unique effect in which the color fades in and out of the visible range as tendrils escape into open air before being reabsorbed into the whole and once again affected by the Ryll Kor. This effect allows the Death Troopers to crash into a room after deployment and not be seen in the slightest by the opposition.

The final substance laced into the compound is a gaseous form of Giggledust created by burning the drug and capturing the smoke inside an insulated capsule that is broken upon deployment of the grenade. The Giggledust, which can be filtered by helmets made to filter out toxins, effects the minds of sentient beings who inhale it. It induces a euphoric state in which the affected being finds everything in their surroundings humorous, incapacitating them by way of moving them to inaction through complete euphoria; allowing easy execution of affected individuals.

The gas cloud created by the deployment of the weapon is capable of filling a 30x30 enclosed room with enough of its laced substances to carry out all of its functions as described. In an outdoor environment, the effects of one canister are heavily diminished and dependent on weather conditions. Generally, the repulsors built into the grenade will allow the canister to travel a total distance of around 10 meters passed its original landing point. The most gas will be released around this landing point, creating a heavy cloud with a radius of four meters in all directions at the point of impact. The rest of the thirty feet of travel the cannister goes through will create a small cloud about a meter wide that follows the canisters travel path. This "secondary cloud" can be quickly dispersed by air with little to no effect on the enemy while the original cloud will tend to clump together and obscure vision as it rolls through the air and adversely affects all captured in its path.

Strengths:
  • The gas causes those who inhale the gas to enter a euphoric state of laughter and hysteria brought on by the Giggledust chemicals laced into the smoke. The duration of this euphoric state is dependent on multiple factors, but will last continuously until the victim is removed from the area of effect of the cloud or sub comes to death as a cause of overdose or other gas, smoke or drug related complications. In general, however, a standard breath of the gas will induce a euphoric state lasting 5-10 minutes if the victim is removed immediately after exposure.

  • The Ryll Kor laced with the smoke absorbs all but the ultraviolet light that passes through it. This creates a black hole-like effect that renders everything inside the cloud invisible to all aside ultraviolet scanners and goggles for the duration of the smoke. This, when combined with the glittering colors of the smoke, creates a highly disorienting effect for those trying to see through the smoke.
Weaknesses:

  • The visual distortion effects of the smoke work both ways, completely obscuring the enemy to the Imperials using it. This requires the users to be highly prepared before entering a room to use the devices to their full effect. Technology such as holovision (after preemptively marking enemies) or ultraviolet scanners/goggles are needed to properly see the enemy through the smoke. These devices are generally not available to standard troops and the use of these grenades can cause just as much harm to the users as good.

  • The canisters of the grenades are rather large and unwieldy to accommodate the mini-repulsors, one canister being about as long as two standard grenades. Meaning soldiers can carry very few into battle, only two or three able to fit on most standard utility belts.

  • The clouds created by these grenades are highly affected by X factors of battle, including wind direction and weather. Rain quickly disperses the Ryll Kor and Giggledust compounds, leaving behind only a simple color smokescreen that is easily swept away by wind. This makes the grenades geared toward indoor combat more so than outdoor.
DESCRIPTION

Imperial Advanced Weaponry is the creator of several unique weapon systems and Imperial innovations. The canisters were no exception to this fantastic innovative thinking. The first problem the scientists faced, after having chosen the proper compounds, was how exactly to design the canisters as to develop a method in which the dispersal system can effectively distribute the gas. Each canister is created by taking a pound of Giggledust and burning it within a contained environment. The smoke is filtered into an insulated glass container which is vacuum sealed and then placed in the center of the durasteel canister.

A secondary insulating cylinder is then inserted around the original glass one and then the grenade is sealed before the laced smoke and gases are pumped in via a maintenance port that is permanently sealed after completion. Upon deployment, the outer casing pops open, forcing the first insulating wall open via specially made exhausts. The sudden release of pressure breaks the inner glass container during deployment and the concoction is forced out into the environment.
