STANDARD FEATURES

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Strengths:
  • Great long-range firepower
  • Great point-defense
  • Ability to generate interdiction fields at long ranges (standard long-range turbolaser range)
  • Ability to penetrate interdiction fields
Weaknesses:
  • Slow, unwieldy (even more so when the gravity field generators are active)
  • Awkward firing arcs due to the gravity field generators
  • Once gravity field projectors are activated, it starts attracting debris from explosions on or of nearby ships, potentially causing hull damage
  • Rapid-fire turbolasers can only fire effectively within half a standard turbolaser range
  • Exposed gravity field generators: for this reason it is a priority target for enemies engaging an Immobilizer 422, since destroying the gravity field generators can potentially gut the ship
  • Exposed ventral hangar
Description: The Ossus campaign proved that the Immobilizer 419 was suffering from attempting to introduce too much capability, and that, in an asteroid field, ERA proved more useful in protecting a ship from debris than NERA, and that the danger of ERA detonations were less than previously thought. In the wake of the Ossus campaign, the Immobilizer 422 (I422) bore the codename Immobilizer 419 Block 3; the need to tractor sensitive items at long ranges, such as asteroids, made it introduce a heavy tractor beam, enabling the I422 to tractor items at ranges up to a standard turbolaser range, or to bring the ship closer to it if the tractored object was significantly heavier than the Immobilizer 422. Also, the increase in the use of interdictors forced the ship to introduce a HIMS, and to reduce the availability of cargo space to house four additional squadrons, for a total of 14 squadrons. The additional energy drain of adding a few triple rapid-fire turbolaser hardpoints and converting the existing double heavy long-range turbolaser hardpoints to triple hardpoints and, combined to the necessity of strengthening the frame, forced the ship to be very sluggish. In the end, the ELINT capability was also gutted so that only EWAR could remain, and the ejectable seat was deemed superfluous as well, especially with escape pods being readily available to the bridge and CIC crew.

The gravity well generators still have their set of weaknesses, as they not only force the heavy hardpoints to carry awkward firing arcs, especially if the target is in or close to being on the same plane as an I422; destroying one of those generators can potentially gut the ship as well. In addition, the ventral hangar is still a critical point of weakness, where a stray missile or attack craft can fire at its fuel and/or ordnance reserves and cripple the ship in doing so. For these reasons, Immobilizer 422s must not be deployed without escorts.
