SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Deployable - Point Defence guns are stored within the ship's hull enabling easier access for maintenance crews, and concealing armament from visual identification.
  • Defence Array - Each Array consists of up to 6 individual turrets placed near one another, these turrets have limited communications with each other.
  • Threat Assessment - Turrets are capable of identifying and responding to high-priority targets, such as incoming torpedos or enemy bomber formations.
  • Laser Targeting - Missiles are painted targets by a laser mounted on the weapon system, once targetted passive radar AA missiles can be launched.
STRENGTHS
  • Machine Learning - Point Defence Arrays can be 'trained' via Wargames or similar simulations improving their effectiveness against particular ship types or designs. During live combat turrets will adjust firing patterns to counter enemy maneuvres gradually improving their effectiveness although the effect is usually marginal.
  • Networked - Limited communications allow turrets to update each other on combat conditions, in some circumstances this enables a connected turret to inform another of an incoming target allowing for more effective pre-firing.
  • Programmable Munitions - Using magnetic coil induction slugs can be programmed to detonate prematurely, or within proximity to targets.
  • CIWS - Twin-linked Slugthrowers are capable of firing 5,000 RPM designed to overwhelm kinetic shielding.
WEAKNESSES
  • Limited Munitions - Point Defence guns have a limited amount of ammunition meaning defences can be ground down, while it's possible to resupply individual cannons this is a lengthy mechanical process requiring several minutes.
  • Overheat - Despite having a high RPM sustained fire can cause heatsinks to fail and barrels to become inoperable, as a result, the Defence gun will typically fire in short bursts.
  • Rubbish in, Rubbish Out - If Machine Learning is to be fully taken advantage of commanders must remain cautious or potentially sabotage their weapon system, while data can be cleared this requires a reboot of individual arrays potentially disabling turrets for several minutes. This also creates an opportunity for Cyberwarfare specialists to reduce the array's overall effectiveness.
DESCRIPTION
ICARUS was designed as a solution for Novean Technology starships which typically included high power overheads for subsystems necessary for research and development. As a result, designers began searching for ways to reduce power overheads without compromising a starship's ability to defend itself from the occasional pirate raid or attack, with that in mind the decision was taken to implement a defence system capable of using kinetic munitions.

More recently, a limited number of ICARUS PD-2 systems were dedicated to the RTL Reliant project, to supplement its more standard complement of laser cannon PD.
