Intent: To convert conventional Gungan army equipment into something more viable for irregular warfare
Development Thread: N/A
Manufacturer: Guilde des Assassins du St. Jacen
Model: N/A
Affiliation: Guilde des Assassins du St. Jacen; Black Sun
Modularity: No
Production: Limited
Classification: Anti-Blaster, Mild Lightsaber defense
Weight: 1.3 kgs
Quality: 6 for its ability to deflect energy blasts and glancing, brief contact lightsaber blows. While it can deflect the bolt from heavier energy weapons, a la a bowcaster, with the way the buckler is typically carried, blocking such a heavy blast would likely inure the wearer’s arm. Slugs: 2, as it only slightly dampens the impact.
Special Features: They are collapsible, the hydrostatic bubble frame able to expand and contract via a forearm-mounted device. As the energy shield is basically just a bubble, it’s a ridiculously lightweight for its energy stopping power.
Description: The Guild of Assassins were born from a Gungan tradition, and as such, were heavily influenced by the way the amphibian people once conducted war. Being as it was that their numbers were too small to mount a conventional force, and the land they needed to protect similarly tiny, they shrank their war assets to accommodate to this new paradigm of guerrilla style, assassin combat.
The Gungan hydrostatic energy shield (of the more tower variety, as seen in the Phantom Menace), while incredibly light, proved too clunky for the more agile combatants of the Assassin’s Guild. While some of the larger, less stealthy Arcadians (Wookiee, Sayormi, Ankura Gungan) may still utilize it in their more barbarian styles of combat, the more roguish opted for a smaller model, a buckler, which would expand and collapse as necessary to deflect the occasional blaster bolt or lightsaber strike, but was rarely utilized for continued defense. At the end of the day, their speed and agility was the preferred shield.
Strengths: Lightweight and formidable, capable of deflecting most energy assaults, so long as the bearer is physically strong enough to take the impact. Collapsible. Unencumbering. Yes, it can be used underwater.
Weaknesses: Defends only a small area. Provides very little protection against slug and other material attacks. Is kinda neat looking, so is reasonably noticeable when activated…which could be detrimental to stealth operation. Offers no opportunity for personal customization and flare. (This has not been confirmed anywhere in canon, but I suspect this technology has issues deploying in climates that are overly dry or cold)
