SPECIAL FEATURES
STRENGTHS & WEAKNESSES
  • [Strength] Fortified against most forms of sensor detection and packing a powerful sensor suite itself, the Hippodamia IA is an ideal choice for conducting clandestine reconnaissance missions against ground targets.
  • [Strength] A pair of guided munitions launchers and a composite homing laser allow the IA to strike with imputiny against any ground targets. Vehicle convoys, infantry, buildings, or bunkers: if there is a missile designed to destroy it, the IA can carry it, and it will use them to great effect.
  • [Weakness] The Hippodamia IA does not possess any air-to-air or forward facing guns: all of its armaments are designed and positioned for attacking ground targets. If confronted by hostile fighters, its only option is to attempt to flee.
  • [Weakness] And it will need to flee fast. While protected by a rudimentary shield generator and very basic durasteel armor plating, the IA is not designed to withstand concentrated return fire either from above or below. Its best option is to strike first, fast, and then leave before a response can be organized. The IA simply cannot perform well in a prolonged engagement.
  • [Weakness] Though fast, the IA is not a dog-fighting vehicle. It cannot perform the tight aerial maneuvers other air or space vehicles can. This means its flight patterns are rather predictable and, on top of having issues withstanding damage, it also has problems avoiding it entirely.
DESCRIPTION

Fighters and bombers are all well and good, but they all too often lack the subtlety and precision the Helix Syndicate prefers to have when going about some of its more clandestine activities. Not to mention they also don’t have the advanced equipment necessary to conduct surveillance and reconnaissance as thoroughly as the Helix Syndicate wants to.

To rectify this, Myton Defense provided the Helix Syndicate with the Hippodamia IA Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Manufactured by Myton Defense, the IA is designed to carry out precision strikes and remote observations against targets of interest to the Syndicate. The IA is a highly specialized UAV and excels in its intended purposes, but naturally fails in all other areas.

It is designed for atmospheric operations, and as such lacks a hyperdrive or the more advanced sublight engines of other starfighters. Because of its rather stripped down appearance and the absence of a human pilot, however, the IA is able to maintain high speeds. What it has in speed, it lacks in maneuverability - the IA was not made to conduct the agile maneuvers often carried out by pilots in dog fights. If the IA is ever engaged by enemy aircraft, it is little more than a sitting duck. This is particularly true in that it lacks any air-to-air weapons - all of its armaments are designed to strike ground targets only.

While airborne hostiles have little to fear, enemies of the Syndicate residing on the ground should be far more concerned.

The IA comes coated in a special anti-sensor material, making it very difficult to detect on approach. Many standard sensor arrays will fail to notice an approaching IA until it is too late. Of course, the anti-sensor coating does not prevent the detection of weapons fire from the IA. The more it fires, the more noticeable it becomes. Fortunately it does not usually need to open fire more than once, as its targets are frequently caught by surprise and then summarily annihilated.

Accuracy is rarely, if ever, an issue for the Hippodamia IA. Its sensors are robust enough that they function optimally even in hazardous weather conditions. When surveilling areas, few things will escape its notice. These advanced sensors work in tandem with a specially designed Epicurus-Class Droid Brain and the Sagittarius-Class Targeting System, granting it higher accuracy than similar models.

In terms of armaments, the IA has more to choose from than most hunter-killer drones. Its guided munitions launchers are designed to be compatible with just about any ordinances, allowing IAs to have their payload customized depending on their needs for any given operation. Also built in to the IA is a precision composite homing laser cannon. This weapon fires a high power, continuous laser beam over vast distances. It is ineffectual against armor, but the intensity is high enough that it can shear through most standard infantry armors. This weapon can be fired continuously for a maximum of six seconds, giving it ample time to scythe through an entire group of infantry (provided they’re relatively close together) if so desired.
