“Don’t cross the streams…”

The HEPP-01 is a new innovation by Stargo Defense Enterprises. This tool was originally created with mining operations in mind, but like everything else at SDE, it soon found itself uses on the battlefield. However, the designers were never tasked with making the tool more weaponized; resulting in a machine capable of multiple roles as it was first intended.

How it works

6644806.jpg

This weapon, though it may resemble a composite laser when fired, is actually a plasma based weapon that is much closer to a blaster than a composite laser. Massive canisters of Tibanna gas are loaded into the machine to provide it with enough ammunition to mine several thousand miles of planet without needing to return for reloads. The gas from these canisters are then moved into a second chamber in the machine that ionizes the gas to a superheated state. While this ionization is taking place, a weak magnetic field is projected to the target area to contain the plasma as it travels.

When the gas is fully ionized, it travels down the length of the field in a loosely back stream of hot plasma. Unlike a blaster that fires tightly compacted bolts, this projector fires long streams of loosely organized plasma particles that produce far more heat across a wider area than a contained bolt would. While this increases area of effect and heat produced, it also means that the ability to fire at long range is lost. The reason behind this is that, due to the weaker magnetic field to keep the particles less compact, more particles are lost to the surrounding environment. This means that the farther a ship is from its intended target, the less damage can be done.

In summary, short ranges are the friend of this particular tool.

Strengths & Weaknesses
It is undeniable that this tool packs a serious punch. It can melt through the toughest substances in the galaxy and can devastate an unearthed deposit of minerals just as easy as it can devastate a star destroyer. This doesn’t come without a catch, however. A ships ray shields must be brought down completely in order to fire on any of its setting.Another downfall to the use of this weapon is that during a firing phase of either setting requires that all other capital weapons be temporarily powered down until the cycle ends. This means that, while fighter defenses may stay online, the ship's capital batteries must not fire until after the cycle ends.

This particular weapon has two firing modes, low energy and high energy. A low energy beam can burn continuously after a single charge, assuming the ship has enough power to sustain the beam and can be aborted at any time without incident. This beam, however, is practical only in use on simple mining operations or in the destruction of surface based installations and cities. It cannot cut through enough rock on this setting to unearth minerals deep in the crust, nor can it burn through a ship’s hull with any easier a time than a sustained salvo of turbo fire.

On High Energy settings, however, the game changes drastically. High Energy firings work in bursts, where a ten second charge time would get you a thirty second stream of plasma. This particular stream would be powerful enough to carve its way through deep rock and most other materials, including Starship hulls; but this comes with a price. Once a firing has begun, it cannot be stopped under its thirty-second run time without overloading critical systems. If one were to abort the firing before the thirty-second mark, the surge of unused power would be diverted automatically across the ships network. The amount of power that would need diverging would short out some, if not all, weapons and possibly fry critical systems. This means that if a captain did not wish to risk destroying their ship internally, they would need to leave their ship open to thirty-whole seconds of enemy fire. This, coupled with the fact the weapon is only practical and short and medium ranges, is a devastating weakness. A lot of damage can be done by a wise captain during a full thirty seconds of an enemy ship’s shields being out of play.

This brings us to our next weakness and our next strength. This weapon, used at medium ranges, is ineffective against enemy ray shields. If a single beam is being fired at an enemy ship at medium range, it will have lost many particles to the environment on its way to the target, making it no more damaging than a powerful turbo laser. At ranges considered close for space combat (10 km or less) the beam has lost much less of its particles to the environment and has a much more devastating heat and electrical effect. Often at these ranges, shields are obliterated within the first few seconds of firing (sometimes instantly if the target ship is of a much smaller class than the firing ship. I.E Star Destroyer v. frigate). This beam then has devastating effects on the hull, often cutting deep enough to sear the ship in half depending on size and how much fire it actually sustains (but this is also variable depending on the specifications of the target craft. A Star Destroyer firing this weapon upon a flagship would have not be able cause this extent of damage without multiple or very well placed hits).

Again, however, it is not as simple as get in close range and fire. Even at these ranges, the ship is highly vulnerable to attack for the full thirty seconds of his firing time. During this time, bombers and turbolaser fire can devastate the ship and destroy it. This is not the only sign that this ship wasn’t designed for ship-to-ship combat readily in-mind however. These laser are fixed and can fire only in straight lines on their given path and each unit is usually fixed on the bottom of the craft, so that it may be used in planetary operations. Planetside, this weapon can devastate cities and hollow out the earth for minerals. However, it still faces the same trouble and more as it must be close to the ground's surface compared to other methods. However, when in use, the particles escaping the magnetic field excite the air molecules and cause it to become super heated in a small radius around the beam. This can kill vegetation and animal life within the area of impact of the beam.

Finally, this system can only be placed over 1,000 meters. Furthermore, only a single unit can be placed on any one ship over a thousand meters unless the ship is heavily specialized in its use of this system (meaning a heavy toll is paid in the way of other armaments). A ship of 500 meters or more can also equip a single unit, but this is only if heavily specialized and they may not hold more than a single unit.

In summary, this tool takes a skilled captain with perfect timing to use effectively in combat. It is by no means a win-all of a fleet as the speed and chaos of a naval conflict make this weapon extremely difficult to aim in such a manner to score a killing blow with a single strike.

@Xander Corbal
While the submission itself looks nice, is organized, and all, the weapon itself is open for a fethton of abuse and is essentially a superweapon in all but name. Because of this I cannot, in good faith, approve of this. This is marked as Denied. If you believe I may have made a misunderstanding, judged this unfairly, or simply wish for another shot, please submit this to the Second Chance forum for reevaluation.

Here is the mentioned rule that I feel this is in violation of:
7. Superweapons are restricted to Staff-Approved Events and must be destroyed prior to the end of the event.
