The Disappointing Son

PLEASE WORK PLEASE WORK PLEASE WORK
Fumbling hands worked at two wires, attempting to make some sort of connection while the thud of metal steps grew ever closer. He had a good life on Rendili, working in a data processing center, watching numbers cross a screen in a nice, dark room. He could even pretend he was helping in the fight against the Sith, helping produce the giant capital ships that went to war against the Empire, while being nowhere near the front lines, of course.

He even got people to learn his fake name! Karick was one of his better ones!

But no, here was Subject-FC03, running through the rain, moving between ship construction bays while workers yelled at him and he nearly stumbled over astromechs. He thought he would just keep running, until he ran into the only locked door on the planet, and he absolutely left his identichit on his desk when he rushed out of his tiny office, a trio of cloaked droids with murderous intent at his heels, blasters and blades tucked away into their cloaks as they pursued their target. That led to this newest predicament, scrambling to rip the chit scanner from its container to expose the wiring. He could hear workers behind him trying to stop the droids, only to be met with a swift death as they made their way to their true target.

03 thought he would be safe in High Republic space. But Darth Nefaron Darth Nefaron 's agents were everywhere.

His genetic father's droids were here to kill him and drag his body back to Anoat to be turned into some grotesque creature that would surely be used to hurt infinitely more people than 03 had ever helped in his rather short life. He might have attempted to find some sort of weapon if he thought it would do any good, but against three assassin droids who had already managed to bypass planetary security? What was he going to do against THEM?

If they had been a living creature, he could have at least begged for his life. Maybe crying could have been helpful then.

"COME ON YOU BLASTED THING OPEN!"

He was shouting now, desperately trying to connect the proper wires. The droids were growing near, near enough for the leader of the trio to draw his blaster and attempt a shot, which found its way to the wall just next to his head. In a final bout of frustration, 03 ripped the wires from the panel, and the door miraculously opened. He sat there, mouth agape for just a moment, until a blaster bolt flew just above his right shoulder, singeing his standard-issue jumpsuit as he scrambled inside, all but punching the control panel inside to slam the metallic door shut just as the droids were approaching. While he was, of course, hyperventilating, he did manage to have a glance around his current haven.

It was a storage shed. He had trapped himself in a storage shed.

There was one door. No windows.

Oh, he was dead.
