"Never Hide Your Heart"

The space port of the Kattadan Jedi Enclave was quieter than most ports Katarine Ryiah had passed through, but it was not calm. There was always movement in places like this such as ships lowering onto landing pads in bursts of steam and engine heat, droids chirping as they hauled supplies, travelers weaving in and out beneath the glow of overhead lights, and Jedi going about their daily tasks. The air carried the familiar scent of metal, fuel, and overbrewed caf.

Katarine stood just off to the side of the main terminal thoroughfare, one shoulder leaned against a support pillar as she waited.

A steaming cup of caf rested in her hand, more for something to do than from any real desire to drink it, though every now and then she lifted it to her lips anyway. Her green eyes tracked the steady flow of beings moving through the port, alert and thoughtful, searching for any sign of the Jedi she had supposedly been sent to meet.

The Council had been frustratingly vague, as usual.

She had been told only that she was being assigned to a mission and that her contact, the Jedi she would be working with, would meet her here at Kattada. No name. No detailed briefing. Just enough information to get her onto a ship and drop her into waiting.

Katarine hated waiting. She hadn't always been this way but her recent mood swings and the dark cause behind them had made her a volatile person she hardly recognized.

She was dressed more like someone prepared for trouble than someone expecting introductions. Tight black pants hugged her legs, tucked neatly into dark boots built more for practicality than fashion, though she wore them well enough to make it hard to tell the difference. A white tank top clung beneath a black leather bomber jacket that looked slightly worn in the way good gear always did. It gave her a sharp, guarded look, one that paired naturally with the faintly impatient set of her mouth. The clothing itself was several centuries old, but then again so was Katarine. That was a long story for another day, however.

A few loose strands of dark hair shifted near her face as a shuttle thundered somewhere overhead, stirring the air. She took another sip of caf and glanced toward the docking bays again.

Still no sign of anyone approaching her. Her fingers tightened slightly around the cup. This had all the markings of one of those assignments the Council liked to pretend were simple. A meeting in transit. A mysterious partner. Minimal information. It usually meant complications, secrecy, or both. Katarine could already feel a low irritation stirring in her chest, though she kept it tucked neatly behind a composed expression.

She pushed off the pillar and adjusted her stance, straightening as another small transport unloaded passengers into the port. For a fleeting moment she wondered if she would recognize the Jedi on sight, or if they would simply appear at her shoulder with some maddeningly calm greeting while she stood there half-finished with her caf.

The thought almost made her smirk.

Almost.

Jared Starchaser Jared Starchaser

To call Jared a shining example of what a Jedi was, was unfair to the Jedi. He carried a lightsaber, he had the teachings, hell, he even carried a holocron with his family name attached to it, but he was much more comfortable as a Wayseeker, or more appropriately a Warden of the Sky. It gave him freedom the Jedi didn’t afford his father. Still, in order to keep himself employed, and ensure someone was watching over the Jedi, Jared kept some connection to the Jedi, mostly to be there and take the missions he could.

Otherwise he was flying with only corporate support to protect spacers and small settlements on his own. Every so often, it was good to check in. And take a mission or two. Link in with the wider Jedi Order and see if he was able to connect with the greater group, to work with someone else. Find that the Jedi weren’t only the lapdogs of the Republic or Alliance.

Taking off from Kattada wasn’t unheard of from him, the Tide of Light, his little pet project, was waiting and ready to go, and Jared was sent back to his own ‘home’ enclave as it were to pick up a teammate. They were heading out into the Outer Rim, or what was once an Outer Rim world, the settlement was so new the Jedi didn’t even assign it a name yet. But there were odd murmurings out there and hte Jedi wanted to solve the issue before it became something larger.

He handled a lot on the Rim on his own, but if the Order was saying something needed another hand? It was going to be done with a partner.

Kat Ryiah. Jedi Master, a carbonite situation. Something the Starchaser family understood. He’d recognized the name but wouldn’t have been able to pick her out. But when he arrived, parking his YT-2400, he recognized the description.

Good not in Jedi robes, so not someone who is stuffy.

“Kat? Jared Starchaser. Seems we’re working together today. Got a ship with you?”
If not, they’d take his.

When Jared greeted her by name, Katarine was immediately pleased to hear none of that Master Ryiah business. Some Jedi were painfully formal, and if she had to insist on being called Kat one more time, she might seriously consider retirement.

"It's nice to meet you."

She finished the last of the caf in her cup and tossed it into a nearby receptacle before turning her attention back to him.

"Nope. This is your ball game Ace." She gestured ahead with one hand. "Lead the way."

As far as Jared went, he was very lackluster in the way of Jedi and formality. He had a good family, but without a war and some power creep, it was astrogation, barriers, and a bit of blinding techniques to slow others down. What he did have was another set of skills, essentially that of a Jedi Sentinel, but also a Jedi hunter. He was good with his ships and knew more than the average about the galaxy.

Was he a Master? Technically, with the years he put into his craft. Did he have any governing body? No, not really.

“My ship’s back this way. Got a location and a bit of a rumor.”
He nodded as he lead the way back to the Corellian Bloodsteel coated YT-2400. It was aging but the updates that a Starchaser could do to a Corellian vessel? Infinite.

“Got a temperate world, a new settlement and what appears to be some monsters left over from a long forgotten dark side cult. Ever hear of the Moross?”
He was speaking in softer tones as they arrived at the ship.

He lead the way and Katarine watched the scenery as they walked. The enclave seemed like a beautiful place, though nothing could really compare to New Genesis. When Ellion Corsair Ellion Corsair had showed her the Jedi enclave there she had been left speechless.

Jared started to talk about the mission and she raised an eyebrow. Monsters? Well looks like this mission just turned into a party.

“Can’t say that I have. Please do tell though.”

She probably needed all the information she could get if they were going to be hunting actual monsters.

Kattada was more home than Corellia lately. The world housed explorers and it always made him miss the hidden worlds of the Levantines. He should get out there again. But for no? He’d do this mission and the next one.

“Moross was an… old dark side cult? From what I gathered, the locals treated their resident Force welders as deities. Anyway. From the report. Apparently someone was creating beasties. And one of the new settlements found a nest…”

Leading the way up the gangway.

“And we’re to do what we can to stop it.” Eliminate or otherwise. “I’ve got the coordinates plugged in. Guest bunks are this way. Room 3 is yours.” He pointed before he made his way to the cockpit.

Nothing like a cult to break up the monotony. Unfortunately, Kat had more experience with cults than she cared to admit, and somehow they were never the harmless, robe-wearing, chanting-around-a-campfire variety. There was always blood, sacrifice, brainwashing, ancient evil, or some combination of the four.

They boarded the ship, and she followed along as he pointed out the important areas. Kat nodded where appropriate, committing most of it to memory before eventually trailing him into the cockpit.

She stayed quiet while he worked through the flight preparations, figuring distracting the pilot before takeoff was probably poor mission etiquette. Instead, she dropped into one of the other chairs and pulled out her datapad.

Or at least, she attempted to.

Technology had apparently decided to evolve several centuries without consulting her, and after a few irritated taps she somehow found herself trapped inside a calculator application.

Kat stared at the screen. Why did this thing even need a calculator? She tapped the corner. Nothing. Swiped upward. Still a calculator. Pressed something else and accidentally added three hundred and seventeen to whatever number had already been sitting there.

Her jaw tightened.

"Do we know anything about these beasties?"

She had intended to research the cult and whatever creatures they were dealing with, but the calculator continued to stare back at her as though personally mocking her.

Kat frowned at it, irritation flaring almost instantly.

"I swear to the Force, if I have to ask you how to close a calculator, I'm throwing this thing out an airlock."

The Jedi knew how to pick them, didn’t they? And sometimes when things were ancient history, maybe the Jedi could get it wrong but only time would tell. Jared had heard many a tale of the Moross Crusade and their books and gods on various expeditions into the Outer Rim and the Unknown Regions.

The Fringe Federation was another name that popped up. He really had to do more research rather than how to track and stop things.

Not used to others on his ship, Jared had done his best to clean it up, and his BD unit was curiously following Kat, merely watching, not stalking her. Jared finished re-powering up the ship and getting his clearance to leave, the engines and repulsors kicking in. Did he notice Kat messing with her datapad? Of course.

Did he make any mention? Not his business.

“Thats the trick. Seems they come at night. From what we’ve got they can hunt humans as prey. And the reports of survivors is a ‘chilling feeling’ when they are on present. Couldn’t tell if that meant physical cold or more…”

As she spoke about the calculator he laughed. “Need help?” The ship was already launching and heading for high atmosphere.

The monsters ate humans because of course they did. Katarine was human, well mostly. Honestly after what the Devil did with her she didn’t know what she was anymore.

Need help?

She sighed, feeling like an old lady, and handed the data pad over to him. “Thanks. I’m sure me not being able to work a simple piece of tech gives you such confidence in my monster fighting abilities. “

She smirked at him.

Hunting as prey and eating were not always the same to Jared, sometimes the things that go bump in the Outer Rim, especially if its a settlement placed on the bones of one long forgotten. Could be anything out there, and if it was the dark side, there were going to be casualties. Sometimes being eaten, or worse, being used as bait.

Maybe to get other Force users.

He wouldn’t consider her an old lady, but he knew very little of her. “Honestly? It never cross my mind. Being able to track something down, and deal with it rarely uses the same part of the mind that tech-toys require.” He looked back. “Hopper, got the datacard from the Jedi?”

"Honestly? It never cross my mind. Being able to track something down, and deal with it rarely uses the same part of the mind that tech-toys require."

Katarine felt one of her eyebrows raise at his statement. This guy might not be formal but he certainly was stiff. Unfortunately Katarine was impish, sarcastic, and not at all the type of woman to let something that dry go without a teasing comment.

“Are you always so charming or am I just lucky?”

The droid beeped in response to his comment she assumed and Kat glanced at it. Was she surrounded by no nonsense straight talkers?

She was going to get written up for this mission. She just knew it.

The Warden was so not used to having people on his ship. His sister sometimes, and every so often someone who needed his rescue. Jared knew that it wasn’t about being stiff, but he wasn’t here to always make friends. He had a job, and people were so temporary for the wanderer…

“Just lucky, I suppose.” He tried to force a smile when he said that, looking at Kat. She was an attractive woman, and he didn’t want to come across as some weird guy on a space ship.

“And yeah, takes me a minute. Last mission had me out in Force knows where helping out a small community of moisture farmers and the pirates. Not exactly best for conversation.” He laughed, not forcing anything. "And once we hit hyperspace, we have some time for some sabacc."

Katarine grinned as she watched him try his absolute best to be social. She supposed it must be hard to work out in the middle of nowhere when your job was exploring things, often alone. She spent so much of her life undercover she just got used to adapting to different social situations but some Jedi didn't have that luxury.

"I dunno.. fighting pirates sounds like a riveting tale. You could probably get your own holo show with a hook like that."

She turned her attention back to her datapad which had mercifully been restored to use and scrolled through the article on the cult. They seemed like general dark whack jobs but it was never that simple.

Jared Starchaser Jared Starchaser

He used to be much more social, able to hold it down in the cantinas on Corellia and Terminus, but that was before the galaxy changed a bit for him and left him in the dust. Serving as someone who helped protect the hidden worlds of the Levantines, and hoping to learn some of the secrets his father had, Jared did his best to keep things close to the chest. People tended to be a temporary commodity for him.

Maybe by a self-sabotaging choice.

“Riveting, I mean, they’re mostly just bullies that the second any shows up with enough firepower, they back off. The trick is that the fight needs to be left to the locals, y’know? Members of a few groups I work with specialize in training guerrillas and locals to keep their own defense up.”

He offered a smile. “So anything interesting in the data?”
