Here comes the rain again

Location: Coruscant Temple - Training Room 331
Objective: Train in Martial Arts
Tags: Kaelos Vryn Kaelos Vryn

Jedi Master Katarine Ryiah stood quietly in the serene training hall of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, the soft hum of distant activity in the halls blending with the calm of the space around her. Her eyes were closed in a meditative stance, but her senses were sharp, attuned to the subtle changes in the Force. Today, she would be meeting a padawan who had requested some martial arts training. Katarine was a master of Teras Kasi, an ancient art that required both physical and spiritual mastery. She had been asked by the Council to lead the exercise today, something she didn't get to do enough of because of all her time spent undercover. Today it was nice to just be a Jedi, no gimmicks, no pretending, and no concealing her identity.

The woman herself was short and slender, standing at only five foot two inches. Her long brown hair, which had been tainted with white ever since her centuries long carbonation freezing, was pulled up on her head. She was wearing a pair of flexible black pants and a white sports bra, designed to allow her body to twist and turn. The floor was covered with protected mattts so that the room resembled more of a dojo than the usual training room. She was waiting for the padawan to arrive and the lesson to begin but she was at peace. Sometimes it was nice to get away from the missions and just train for a bit.

Whilst walking, the young boy adjusted his weapon at his side.

There was a lot going on in his head, thoughts and feelings he was starting to deal with. He'd only recently left the office of the Jedi Grandmaster following their conversation around Vera Noble Vera Noble . One quick outfit change later and he was already heading towards an empty classroom to study further.

The subject of choice had been one suggested by Braze Braze . The Master and Apprentice duo had engaged in some saber training in which Kaelos had established his preferance for Form I and From III combat. Jedi needed to be able to handle themselves if they lost their plasma swords however.

Enter Katarine Ryiah Katarine Ryiah , Martial Arts Expert.

Kaelos entered the room, feeling the padded flooring under his boots. At least if he was slammed to the ground, it wouldn't hurt too much. There was a slight spring to it as well, which was even more usefu and even more protective.

With a bow to the Jedi Master, Kaelos crossed his arms behind his back. "Master Ryiah, I appreciate your time" he acknowledged. "Whilst I enter this room with very little experience in hand to hand combat, I hope to leave with at least some ideas that I can refine in my own time"

When Kaelos entered Katarine offered him a warm smile. She was excited to meet the young man and get to know him and his skills. For a while now she had been wondering if she ought to open another enclave so that she could get to know more of the students. Her time undercover kept her away from the Temple and that meant she didn't always get to connect with her fellow Jedi. Today was a nice change of pace.

"It's nice to meet you Padawan Kaelos. You should learn a bit today. I've found that many Jedi are great with their lightsabers but if those weapons ever get taken away some Jedi are unprepared. Today I'm going to teach you the basic forms of Teras Kasi. It's a martial arts form that was specifically developed to fight Force users. Have you ever heard of it?"

She wondered if he had ever come across it in the archives or not and waited for him to asnwer before moving on to the next part of the lesson.

"This is the basic stance of the first form we will learn."
She stood with her feet spread slightly and her arms bent at the elbows and up in front of her face.

Kaelos cast a smile towards Katarine Ryiah Katarine Ryiah .

"Teras Kasi?" he asked softly, raising an eyebrow. He wasn't aware that hand to hand combat had a special name, he honestly just assumed it would be as simple as "fighting" or "hand to hand". Teras Kasi made it sound all special and formal and more akin to lightsaber combat.

"It's a martial arts form that was specifically developed to fight Force users"

Oh, the name made sense now. He shook his head towards her next question on if it was something he'd ever heard of. He didn't realise that there was an entire form of martial arts designed just to fight against those who could utilise the Force, but he found that it wasn't overly surprising. Force users could be extremely slippy, assisted by the Force to gain abilities such as unnatural strength and speed.

The young Padawan watched as the more experienced Jedi Master took up a stance, with her feet slightly spread and her hands up to protect her face. He mirrored her stance, clearly no-where near as refined as she was but he was going to give it his best go.

"Is this where I get absolutely beat up for an hour?" he asked with a chuckle, clearly playful in tone.

"Is this where I get absolutely beat up for an hour?"

Katarine chuckled at his comment. "Don't worry, we will take it slow. For now I"m just showing you the basic stances and moves. Once we get into more physical contact there is padding we can wear."

There were many different ways to teach Teras Kasi and in fact Katarine had been developing her own methods for a while now.

"Martial arts in many ways reflect our own teachings as Jedi. They require discipline to truly master them, just as the Jedi believe of the Force. Many martial art forms are useful but often Jedi ignore them in favor for lightsaber combat or the Force. I've found that under cover assignments often require a look outside the box so as not to give away your identity right away."

As she spoke she softly corrected his stance, her small delicate hands bending his elbows slightly more, or widening his stance just a tad.

"Teras Kasi is a martial art that was designed by studying the fauna of various worlds. Its primal, aggressive, but also fluid and harmonious, just like nature is. We will start with the first move called the Aryx Slash. It was developed by studying the avian species Aryx from Cerea. Watch me, and then you try."

She took the stance and demonstrated a downward slashing movement, one that focused on the ball and socket joint in the shoulder.
