ADVANCED SYSTEMS
- Fleet Replenishment System: Multiple armored docking points, extendable transfer booms, cargo umbilicals, and magnetic docking clamps allow the Haven-class to transfer fuel, consumables, spare parts, ordnance, and other supplies directly to nearby vessels. Several smaller ships can be serviced simultaneously.
- Mobile Repair Facilities: Large engineering workshops, fabrication bays, machine shops, diagnostic equipment, and repair-droid complements allow the vessel to conduct field repairs that would normally require a permanent naval installation. External maintenance gantries permit work on vessels too large to enter the hangars.
- Modular Logistics Bays: Much of the vessel's internal cargo volume uses standardized modular storage spaces. Individual bays can be configured for ammunition, replacement components, humanitarian supplies, fuel-processing equipment, medical stores, or mission-specific equipment.
- Component Fabrication Facilities: Industrial fabricators and machine shops can manufacture common replacement parts from stored raw materials. The system emphasizes simple, standardized components used throughout the Castell-designed UPSS ship family rather than highly specialized equipment.
- Fleet Engineering Database: The vessel maintains comprehensive technical schematics, diagnostic libraries, maintenance records, and repair procedures for Protectorate vessels, particularly the standardized Castell ship family. Engineering teams can remotely assist damaged vessels with diagnostics and repair planning.
- Emergency Medical Complex: A substantial medical section provides surgical facilities, bacta treatment, triage wards, isolation rooms, and casualty reception areas, allowing the ship to receive wounded personnel from multiple vessels following an engagement.
- Auxiliary Command Facilities: A secondary operations center allows the Haven-class to coordinate fleet logistics, repair priorities, casualty evacuation, convoy movements, and supply distribution independently of the primary bridge.
- Redundant Engineering Architecture: Power distribution, life support, communications, and essential logistics systems employ multiple isolated pathways, allowing portions of the vessel to remain operational after substantial battle damage.
STRENGTHS
- The Fleet's Workshop: The Haven-class can repair, resupply, refuel, rearm, and maintain Protectorate vessels far from established naval bases, dramatically extending the operational endurance of a deployed fleet.
- Built to Keep Working: Heavy shielding, reinforced armor, redundant utilities, compartmentalization, and extensive damage-control equipment make the Haven unusually difficult to disable for a support vessel.
- One Family of Ships: The vessel carries extensive stores of standardized parts and equipment compatible with the Castell-designed Protectorate ship family. This reduces the number of specialized components a deployed fleet must carry.
- More Than a Military Tender: Modular cargo holds, medical facilities, workshops, and numerous support craft allow the Haven to serve effectively during evacuations, disaster relief, reconstruction, and humanitarian operations.
WEAKNESSES
- Not a Line Warship: Despite its cruiser-sized hull, the Haven carries comparatively little offensive firepower. It is intended to survive an attack long enough to withdraw or receive assistance, not exchange sustained fire with enemy cruisers.
- Slow and Heavy: Extensive storage compartments, workshops, hangars, armor, and industrial equipment make the Haven slower and less maneuverable than most combat cruisers of comparable size.
- A Fleet's Achilles Heel: Destroying or capturing a Haven can deprive an entire deployed formation of fuel, ammunition, replacement components, medical support, and repair capability. Enemy commanders therefore have considerable incentive to target one.
- Explosive Cargo: Fuel, ammunition, reactor components, and other hazardous supplies are distributed through heavily protected storage compartments. Penetrating hits against these areas can cause catastrophic secondary explosions despite the vessel's compartmentalization.
- Better With Friends: The Haven is designed to operate behind or within a protected fleet formation. Its limited offensive armament and poor maneuverability leave it vulnerable if isolated from escorting warships.
DESCRIPTION
The Haven-class Fleet Support Cruiser was developed at Castell as the fourth and least conventionally martial member of the United Protectorate of Sovereign Systems' new standardized naval family. Commander
The Haven was Castell's answer to the problem nobody noticed until the shooting had already started.
At 750 meters in length, the vessel occupies roughly the same displacement category as a substantial cruiser, but relatively little of that volume is devoted to offensive weaponry. Its interior instead resembles a mobile shipyard and naval depot. Vast cargo compartments carry fuel, ammunition, consumables, replacement components, medical supplies, raw materials, and standardized parts for the Protectorate fleet. Fabrication shops manufacture common components while machine shops and engineering bays repair damaged equipment brought aboard from other vessels.
External servicing stations allow ships to dock alongside the Haven without entering its hangars. Fuel lines, power connections, cargo umbilicals, maintenance gantries, and enclosed access tubes can be extended toward damaged or depleted vessels. Smaller ships may dock directly with the support cruiser, while engineering teams can perform limited exterior repairs upon larger vessels while both ships remain in space.
Its hangars consequently favor utility over combat strength. Only a single squadron is normally allocated to starfighters for local protection. The remaining capacity is occupied by shuttles, cargo transports, repair craft, recovery vehicles, personnel transports, and other support vessels necessary to move supplies and technicians throughout a dispersed formation.
The Haven also serves as the medical center of a deployed Protectorate fleet. Casualties evacuated from damaged vessels can be brought directly into its medical complex, treated, stabilized, and retained aboard until transfer to permanent facilities becomes possible. During humanitarian deployments, the same facilities can support civilian disaster relief and mass-casualty operations.
Survivability received considerably more attention than offensive power. A fleet tender unable to survive long enough to support its fleet defeats its own purpose. Heavy shields, reinforced armor, compartmentalized storage, redundant power networks, and extensive damage-control systems therefore protect the Haven's enormous stores. Its weapons are primarily defensive, intended to discourage starfighters, bombers, raiders, and smaller warships rather than transform the vessel into another line combatant.
Those protections do not make the Haven invulnerable. Its enormous stores of fuel and ammunition make penetrating damage particularly dangerous, and its size and poor maneuverability make disengaging from an enemy difficult. More importantly, the Haven represents an exceptionally valuable strategic target. A fleet may survive the destruction of a cruiser. Destroy its ammunition, fuel, spare parts, repair facilities, and medical support at the same time, however, and the consequences can persist long after the battle ends.
For that reason, Haven-class vessels rarely travel alone. Patrol corvettes scout ahead, escort frigates protect the formation, and line cruisers confront the enemy. The Haven remains behind them, performing the considerably less glamorous task that allows all three to continue doing their jobs.
It does not exist to win the Protectorate's battles.
It exists to make certain the fleet can fight the next one.
