Ground to Space Cannon?

Noah Corek

Cocked, Locked and a Smoking Barrel
So, recently I've been fascinated with space-based weaponry such kinetic rod weapons and even to the more sci-fi like laser cannon. Most of these weapons are designed to destroy targets on the planet. I was wondering that if this can be reversed, using ground based weapons to destroy targets in orbit. If this is possible, would it need a dev thread?

Yes but I want something that can be produced on a much larger scale

That was a ion cannon, I want something that can actually destroy ships

Considering less than 3 shots from a planetary heavy ion cannon knocked out a freakin' Imperial Star Destroyer, you'd be fine. I'm sure most planets, if not all, have some sort of militia or a defense fleet. Ion cannon knocks out the shields, electronics, and countermeasures, then the defense fleet swoops in for the kill.

If not, you could always reverse-engineer turbolaser technology. It will most likely be much less effective considering there's no friction or gravity in space, therefore a reduced velocity. I'm not saying it can't be done, I just highly suggest a little research.

It's possible to make a rail gun system. But that would be huge and cost an insane amount of money. On top of that the blast would have to be strong enough to breach the atmosphere.

But hey. Possibilities.

If you have enough credits to make that you can just buy a few Ion cannons instead with just about equal power.

One gun, missing a piece = No good.
10 or so Ion, One missing piece = Still got a few more.

I would say to make/buy something simple yet effective and durable instead of making something new that could put you in a bad spot. Rail guns only a few years ago in RL were prototypes and still are being worked on. Starwars, sure they are more advanced, but even then, would still cost alot.

The amount of un science in these posts make me sad. :(

Yes you can. It won't be any more expensive than a ship minted weapon assuming you're targeting ships in low orbit. Otherwise, you'd have to increase the ranges by a lot.

Actually you won't.

In fact, it'd be cheaper because most of the materials could be harvested on planet.

And since you're using laser weaponry, exit velocity is a nonissue. So is atmospheric friction. Actually that wasn't a true issue in the first place.

Targeting is the major issue, but since we're talking about existing technology that can hit a dime on a plate from a thousand kilometers, targeting isn't an issue either.

But, to answer your question, yes, you would need a submission and maybe even a Dev Thread, depending on the whims of the judge reviewing your entry.
