STRENGTHS
- Competent Leader - One does not become the Governor in the Capital of the Great Javin Sector for nothing, without a very specific set of skills. He is a wordsmith and a worthy tactician, capable of going toe-to-toe to the gamblers and wealthy criminals on Kaal, convincing a population of miners that have lived on Abraxas for generations that he is best for their livelihood, and striking deals for the mutual defense of his people with the likes of Lortans and the Tunroth of Jiroch-Reslia. The scope of his persuasive ability is as large as his frame.
- Starship Pilot - Despite his rather opulent appearance, Ryker has proven adeptly skilled at the controls of star ships, handling the pressures of being a captain of larger ships is also one of his skills. Though his skill does not rise to the occasion of anything larger than a cruiser, which is a rarity in these parts in of itself.
- Snappy decision maker - Ryker, especially in a situation where lives are at stake, does not dance around a problem until it feels morally right to do something. If someone he considers within his protection is in danger, or is in threat of being harmed, he will prioritize their life above any stranger that might be near them. His compassion makes sure any problem is solved as quickly as is necessary, for better or worse for those around him.
WEAKNESSES
- Physically inept - It is extremely clear that from his short stature and corpulent weight, that he is neither the Handsome Leader some might expect from someone so persuasive, and certainly no warrior. Due to this, his roles beyond an administrative or commanding presence is rather limited. To make up for this however, he uses his influence to give him some very good support, and he treats them with the utmost respect.
- Face for the radio - Despite his charisma to those who listen to him, many people simply can't get over his face. It is difficult to believe a man with such a degenerate eating disorder could have the powerful will enough to actually lead an entire planet.... effectively, too! It can be difficult when you negotiating with someone for the first time, so he often delegates face to face interactions to people less homely than he to get the interaction going, and to soften the sudden ugly face often misassociated with someone untrustworthy.
- Boldness - Ryker believes in go big or go home, he never does something "a little bit". Age has not lessened his desire to do something as powerfully as he can, but strengthened it. So when he sees the opportunity to do something he will do it without a second consideration, for good or ill, because he think it is right. It is a constant reckless desire which motivates his life forward, and this can only end badly.
- Lead from the front - Ryker believes that in times of peace, one should "sit behind the people", but in times of conflict, he must "stand before them". In other words, even in spite of his physical ineptitude, he wishes to show that he is with his people, and do what they will do even if it should possibly cost him his life.
BIOGRAPHY:
Before the Coalition
Very little of Ryker Kel's life is particularly interesting or important prior to his coming into the office of Governor. It wasn't until the "Lords of the Fringe" had attacked Javin without warning, desolated their defenses, and stolen heirlooms to the long line of Governors who had served Javin through the dark ages of the Gulag Plague, that his career truly began as a rebel. For years while the Fringe ruthlessly controlled Javin following such a humiliating defeat, Ryker worked in the underground, speaking to his people behind a curtain of darkness. A move was never made against the Fringe after such an incredible show of force, but sentiments for his ideals about the oppression of foreign powers grew sympathies in the populace. As the power of the Fringe spread to other worlds, it eventually collapsed as all Empire's do under the unbridling heat of civil war. Sometime after Javin became neutral once more, the people taken up by the voice of the revolutionary eventually ended up sending him up into a renewed office of the Governor. For many years Governor Ryker served the people of Javin fruitfully and peacefully content, though ever worried and suspicious of the activities of surrounding factions, such as the Omega Protectorate. Never again would he allow a foreign power to so tyrannically oppress his world ever again. Though, there was little he could do had a faction ever deigned to pay a visit to Javin again, as it suffered still from its massive loss to the Fringe years ago. It did however, share a special bond with a neighboring world - Kaal.
It had been under similar circumstances when the Lords of the Fringe had occupied its planet as well, though for reasons unknown it would seem the military might of the Fringe had scathed Kaal less than the unfortunate Javin. They both though, still shared a fear for foreign powers, while they practiced their gambling and other dubious activities. Ultimately though, Governor Ryker visited the planet on occasion, and began making connections in the underworld. Eventually he rose enough in power, that he could pull a few strings and say word here or there, to the point that he was able to establish a long standing partnership between the two planets so that they would mutually exchange the goods they each needed. It was this partnership, that began the long road towards the formation of the Coalition.
The Oversector Forms
As the years went by, and the threat of foreign powers subsided within his region, Governor Ryker began to look to other worlds disillusioned by the state of the galaxy. He searched for other worlds that would help to enrich his homeworld further, and establish his respect across the few stars that mattered to him. He reached out to the planet Abraxas, a small mining planet sparse of any resources, with a long history of these miners finding a way to pull something out of the dirt anyway. Providing them with technology and food stuffs, once again the supposedly empty mines of Abraxas turned out to be fruitful for both Javin and Kaal, as it began to build an urban-industrial city on the surface of the otherwise barren planet. There were many other stories of a similar kind, where the kind Governor would reach out to poor planets, and find some use in them for his growing influence.
However, despite these rather domestic improvements within the region, there was one critical flaw which constantly nagged at his mind, reminding him of the Fringe rule - no world he brought into his fold could be defended. His agreements and respect were all for show unless he could truly protect them.
That's when he took a chance, looked to the archives, and discovered the Lortans and the Tunroth. One an expansionist civilization, which very nearly wiped out the prestigious and traditional warriors in the Tunroth... who against all odds, survived Genocide and restored their numbers ten fold before the Four Hundred Year Darkness. Taking a chance that he might be able gain the trust of one of these races for protection, he traveled to Lorta and Jircho-Reslia... and stumbled upon something historically significant. The Lortans remembered their past sins, and after eight hundred years of contemplation from one generation to the next, showed signs of remorse towards the Tunroth people. They were subtle, but they were there. He was eventually capable of becoming a critical player in negotiating a non-aggression pact between the two races, a first step towards repairing their relations... though the Tunroth never forgot, and would never forgive, but they agreed they would not consider attacking the Lortans for the crimes so long as they were left to remain in peace.
From there, both races ended up endorsing the good Governor at different intervals, and agreed to support any world within his protection in exchange for the resources the fledgling coalition enjoyed as one, albeit at different periods of time. At some point or another after a few years under this arrangement, the simple partnership of worlds, became known as: The Oversector. A coalition that bonded together the The Greater Javin sector with the Yushan, and Gendius Sectors.
The Belsavis Incursion
With the growing proximity of such imperious factions as the One Sith and First Order, fear of foreign powers once again arose, and this fear of losing independence brought the Oversector closer together, recognizing their co-dependant upon one another.
The fear growing within the Oversector came to a head when the surprisingly militant Galactic Alliance - a faction hell bent on eradicating the Sith and the Dark side - brought their conflict to Belsavis. Normally, this would only heighten the anxiety within the Coalition that the Alliance might one day attempt to take their region by force, or coercion just as the Fringe had done to a number of worlds within their Coalition. However, something far more sinister had come about.
As [member="Marcello Matteo"] spoke with the World Razer ([member="Jacen Voidstalker"]) within Belsavis, it became clear that the being of destruction would have to construct a more elaborate ruse than to play into the pity of a single human. At this time, Governor Ryker, just as all other leaders of the Coalition, was contacted by the World Razer in much the same way that the Galactic Alliance had been. The message received was foreboding, and was reason enough for an emergency summit of the relevant powers within the Oversector.
So far as they were aware, they had confirmable evidence that there was a superweapon on Belsavis, and according to the only information they had, the Galactic Alliance had arrived on Belsavis to find it, and possibly use it. The World Razer pleaded that they attack Belsavis immediately, to stop the Galactic Alliance from finding the weapon, and remove it from Belsavis before it was "too late." Almost unanimously under the guidance of Ryker, the Oversector Coalition had agreed that given what little time they had with the information they received, a pre-emptive strike was necessary for the survival of the Coalition, of their people, and the galaxy at large.
The Galactic Alliance will not be allowed to conquer the galaxy so long as Governor Ryker Kel protects the Oversector Coalition!
