Nubia was a planet that Ko trusted. He’d spent plenty of years on the planet earlier after his initiate trials in the service corps. It’d been some time since he’d last visited. But it wasn’t too far from Tython and the core. Now the system lay within the borders of the High Republic, even if it was only a border world still dangerously close to the Sith.

Plenty of advanced and high end medical technology was produced on Nubia. Enough to get Valor and his troublesome busted rib back in working order by people that Ko personally trusted. The Kel Dor made plenty of friendships and connections during his time here, and even some bitter rivalries and opponents. Poachers and highwaymen being chief among the adversaries he faced.

Currently the Kel Dor and Echani just departed from a grav train at what seemed to be an empty station among vast fields. It was inhabited by only a handful of lazy droids tasked with manning and maintaining the station. Once they were off the grav train moved along to the next stop, speeding away into distant horizon.

It would seem as though Valor had been dragged out into what looked to be literally the middle of nowhere. Ko himself hadn’t yet explained what they were doing. Stepping through the station into the empty parking lot absent of any land speeders or bikes Ko brought his hand up to palm his face gently. “Oh dear, looks like I forgot to rent us some swoops. How foolish of me, whatever shall we do…” He said with a humored tone and a soft chuckle from under his mask before looking back towards Valor.

Valor glanced around and saw… nothing… as far as the eye could see, he saw nothing of note except the grav-train station they had just been unceremoniously deposited outside of…

He frowned, looking back at his Master. "There's nothing here…? You worked in the middle of nowhere?" He squinted into the distance as though the horizon might sharpen out of sheer spite, then kicked lightly at the dust near his boot. For a brief moment, he reached outward through the Force, letting his senses stretch beyond the obvious in search of something hidden, buried, or simply too far off for the eye alone to catch.

Nothing immediate answered him… or at least nothing he could yet make sense of.

His gaze slid back toward his Master, suspicion settling more firmly across his features. "Did you forget, or am I meant to suffer for my education?"

Valor’s response and word choice got Ko to laugh some more. “You’re sharp Valor, and not wrong to come to that conclusion. I was hoping we could squeeze in some important training and lessons thanks to your recovery here.” Since Ko was on Nubia he also wanted to meet up with some old friends of his that lived not too far from here. “We’ll also be going to where I was stationed in the service corps. You can get to see where I used to live and work before becoming a fully fledged apprentice like yourself. That is if you want to.” Ko explained before walking out to the empty parking lot. There was a single road stretching out from it towards the horizon towards civilization. “A few dozen kilometers from where is the nearest town, a remote farming community.”

The Kel Dor glanced upwards towards the sky. Way off to where the Nubus sun shined its light across the planet. “If we’re quick we can reach the town before nightfall.” Turning back to Valor he continued. “Tell me, how familiar are you with using The Force to increase your movement speed? You were quite spry on Tython even with your previous wound.”

He liked being praised, even when it came wrapped in jest; it earned Ko more of his attention.
“I am familiar with it, but I am not very good at it beyond a small burst here or there… prolonged use is not something I have trained for. It takes a great deal out of me,” Valor offered softly.
“If I want to? I am not sure I have much of a choice, given the circumstances now, do I?” he asked with a faint frown.

“Why did you live out in the middle of nowhere? I thought Jedi generally… raised the little ones in their temple after taking them from their parents, since most people are not equipped to raise Force-sensitives who are strong in the Force anyhow…”

“Correct, it’s not an ability that can often be used for prolonged periods of time. More suited for short bursts of velocity in a critical moment. It can burn through your stamina and reserves of force energy if you use it too much. It's a powerful asset in a Jedi's tool box. Useful for defense, avoidance, and even offense.” Ko was planning to see about testing some of the limits of such an ability this evening.

Ko listened more to what Valor had to say about how Jedi treated their young. Letting out a soft sight he shook his head slightly. “A popular assertion but not exactly correct. The Jedi don’t take children. They receive them, only under the consent of their guardians. Historically most children given to the Jedi have come from lower echelons of society. Very rarely does some affluent or noble family offer their force sensitive first born to the Jedi.” After giving the echani a brief lesson on the practice and history of Jedi recruitment he would answer their question.

“I was stationed here in Nubia after my initiate trials. At that time there weren’t many mentors in the New Jedi Order and it was during a time of reconstruction after the second great hyperspace war. So I volunteered for the service corps. This world is where I spent most of my time working in agriculture and growing food at an industrial scale to help alleviate shortages during the war. So I live out here, in the middle of nowhere.” The Kel Dor explained to Valor.

"Growing food for others is a noble, if thankless, task," Valor commented lightly. His gaze drifted out across the empty fields and the long reach of them. "What if I can't keep up with you?" he asked, more softly this time.

He was not the gifted Force adept his half sibling, Braze, was. That fact had long been a thorn in Valor's side, stealing the joy from too many moments. Again and again, he found himself measuring his own worth against the legendary standard set by the half-breed prodigy.

Too often, Valor had felt like the spare, the remnant his 'parents' no longer had any use for. The being he had grown up believing was his everything had been cast out and, so far as he knew, dissolved… leaving him behind as an awkward pariah, a living reminder of a wretched chapter none of them wished to face.

He held no real sentiment of love for either Kaito Starfall Kaito Starfall or Lady Kyoteru Seraphine Lady Kyoteru Seraphine now. Neither seemed to have any true place for him in their lives, nor did either appear capable of meeting him without that quiet stain of shame settling over every exchange.

But the truth remained… he was painfully self-conscious of where he stood in his growth with the Force, and too often reached for it as something to be bent toward his own desires. By any fair reckoning, it was not a very Jedi way of approaching it.

“That it is. But excitement, adventure, and glory and not appropriate goals or ambitions for Jedi to pursue. And you shouldn’t worry about keeping up with me. That’s not the point of the exercise here.” Ko was focused on building up the teens' capabilities. Stepping through the empty parking lot, Ko’s gaze shifted around it before leaning his cane against his body to keep it up. Letting go of it he reached at the gourd he kept on his belt. Slotting a straw at its cap with his mask he drank some of its contents. Inside was a very sweet and very sugary tea. He only took a few sips so as to not waste it for later.

“Now, go to one end of the lot, I’ll stand at the opposite end. All I want you to do is to dash across it. So I can get an idea of where you’re at. Sounds good?” Ko instructed before stepping over to the opposite end of the parking lot. He was hoping to get an idea of where the echani was at. Creating a control group to compare and contrast for later. They can do a bit of practice here away from prying eyes or judgement before putting it to the test later.

Valor gave Ko a sour look before sighing, then walked to the far end of the lot to prepare for his dash. He did the best he could, drawing on the Force to give himself a burst at the start. After a few steps, that speed drained from his limbs, and he let his forward momentum carry him farther on its own. About halfway through, he called on another small surge of energy and speed before sliding across the opposite end's finishing line.

He padded back over, breathing harder than usual, though still through his nose rather than his mouth. His small chest rose and fell with the effort; this had taken more out of him than he would have liked to show. He had completed the task easily enough, and it was plain he could use Force Speed to at least some modest degree.

He looked to Ko with an expectant, curious expression, as though waiting to hear whatever commentary might follow the run he had just finished. He was not Braze, and he did not have that same deep well of strength or formidable prowess to draw from. But this… this was what he felt he could offer without surrendering too much.
