The events of the day had been good for those of Midvinter who had seen their town ransacked. A day of decorating a tree for Fete, singing traditional songs, and handing out refreshments and presents to the children left JJ tired, but also made him feel very rewarded. There were times the best gift was the one received from giving gifts to those who did not expect them. The children had clearly not expected them, but there was another Judah had not mentioned anything to about gifts.
It was no surprise Judah had feelings for the ranger he traveled with. They did not discuss them because they did their best to keep the relationship professional, but they were still there regardless. His parents had pulled him aside to ask about her, and what was going on as his letters to them indicated things were serious.
