SPECIES: Duros

AGE: 42

SEX: Male

HEIGHT: 5’10”

WEIGHT: 185 lbs

EYES: Red

HAIR: N/A

SKIN: Blue

FORCE SENSITIVE: Yes

STRENGTHS:
Darksider: Gol Dorren is an adherent to the ways of the Force, plural. Beyond his early instruction in Matukai techniques; he has gained fragmentary knowledge of various other Dark Side traditions, from the Nightsisters to the Krath. With these fragments and decades of practice, he has developed into a proficient Force Adept with a varied skillset. He can use the Force to enhance his physical abilities, as well as exercising mental powers ranging from telekinesis to influencing the minds of others.

Secretive: From a young age, Gol has made a habit of keeping secrets. From his childhood escapes from the family estate to his days as an illegal Swoop racer, he has learned how to conceal his true intentions and cover his tracks. He is experienced in deception and stealth, talents which have only been enhanced by his growing knowledge of the Dark Side.

Martial Artist: Gol has not neglected his Matukai training, continuing to practice throughout his life. He has supplemented it with other teachings and personal experience over the years. This has kept him in peak fitness and allowed him to develop a unique fighting style, lethally effective in both armed and hand-to-hand combat, striking with Force-enhanced speed and strength.

Shadowrunner: Through study and experience, Gol has become a champion Swoop racer and a skilled star-pilot. He is capable of piloting a variety of ground and space vehicles, from speeder bikes to small space freighters.

Eidetic Memory: The Duros reputation for excellent recall is one Gol more than lives up to. Anything he has a chance to focus on is committed almost perfectly to memory. This allows him to retain information more easily than most, and makes him a very fast learner.

Upper Crust: Gol Dorren is the majority shareholder of the HyperLux corporation, a high-end luxury starship manufacturer based on Epica. Not only does this facilitate the maintenance and upgrading of his own ship, The Banshee, but also provides with him with a significant passive income. Gol has considerable personal wealth, and is rarely concerned with the expenses of his travelling lifestyle, able to purchase top-of-the-line tech, equipment and keep his ship perfectly maintained. His income also enables him to expend significant resources on black market deals and the procurement of Dark Side artefacts, legally or otherwise.

WEAKNESSES:
Adrenaline Junkie: Beneath his cold exterior, Gol is addicted to danger and darkness. Be it swoop racing, physical combat or navigating dangerous environments, he gets a thrill from threat. This makes him susceptible to taking on unnecessary risks, and less cautious than is often warranted.

Darksider: Though it grants him significant power, the Dark Side is slowly consuming Gol. He is addicted to its use, and regularly immerses himself in it without any real need. This has blinded him to the value of Force techniques that do not draw upon the darkness, leaving gaps in his knowledge. More than that, it has begun to warp his mind. He grows increasingly suspicious, quick-tempered and power-hungry. This makes him vulnerable to manipulation, as well as posing challenges to forming good relations with others.

Obsessive: Gol has a tendency to become fixated on specific objectives, to the point of tunnel-vision. This can blind him to alternative solutions and opportunities, as well as making him vulnerable to manipulation by those who can discover or influence his obsessions.

Delegator: Matters Gol considers 'beneath him' are of little interest or concern. He is more than willing to palm off responsibility for more mundane matters to subordinates, contractors and droids. Examples include his handing running of the HyperLux corporation to an executive officer, and leaving droids to handle the majority of The Banshee's operations. He is content to leave those he delegates to unsupervised, at least til something goes wrong.

APPEARANCE:
Gol Dorenn has a distinctive face for a Duros, being more narrow and hard-featured than most. A heavy brow sits above a deep-set pair of crimson eyes. His mouth is perpetually downturned, garnering him more than a few unfavorable comparisons to a Neimoidian. The pale blue skin of his face is lightly etched with wrinkles, betraying his age. Despite this, his often-bare arms are corded with muscle and his physique is that of a trained athlete, appearing to have relaxed none with the mounting years.

In his travels, Gol favours a long, sleeveless tunic of dark fabric, not dissimilar in design to traditional Jedi clothing, though his are more accurately inspired by his former Matukai instructor. He wears armguards plated with black Durasteel and tall, black leather boots. His belt is usually adorned with a few pouches and containers, to hold equipment and supplies for his frequent expeditions. Over the whole ensemble, he usually dons a hooded cloak, tattered at the hem from years of abuse. Indeed, all his garb is well-worn, betraying his utilitarian attitude to garments: Nothing is replaced until it no longer serves its function.

There is another, rather more ostentatious set of attire that Gol has become known for, though few would associate it with his name. All through his years of swoop racing (legal and otherwise), he maintained anonymity with a full-body flight suit. The base is an all-in-one black bodysuit, with blue padded segments to protect sensitive areas. Black durasteel armor covers his lower legs, forearms and torso, with accents picked out in silver. To cap it all off he wears a custom helmet, likewise plated with durasteel in black and silver. It serves as practical protection from the dangers of underground swoop races, including other racers. It also represents his alter ego, the infamous Swoop champion known as 'The Shadowrunner’, even altering his voice to complete the disguise.

BIOGRAPHY:
Gol Dorren hatched on Epica, where his family owned the ship-building company HyperLux, specialised in luxury personal vessels tailored to the whims of wealthy clients. As a result, the family had grown quite wealthy themselves and Gol had a privileged upbringing.

As soon as he had matured beyond his larval state he was left primarily in the care of private tutors, and demonstrated a strong curiosity from an early age. However, his tutors found him to be ‘unruly’ and lacking in discipline. He rejected any subject that did not pique his interest and as he grew, spent an increasing amount of time shirking his formal studies. He would disappear from the family estate to explore the forests and hills nearby, often bringing home animals he’d ‘befriended’, much to the chagrin of the tutors whose scheduled lessons he was dodging. He was seen as a problem child, and ultimately his parents would go to considerable lengths to deal with that fact. It wasn’t until he was 11 years old that his Force sensitivity was discovered.

During a lesson on statistics and probability, one of Gol’s tutors noted he could predict the roll of a chance cube with frightening accuracy. Shortly after that, his parents arranged for an anonymous blood test that confirmed beyond all doubt his high concentration of midi-chlorians. Afraid he might attract attention from religious groups like the Jedi and unwilling to surrender their only offspring, Gol’s parents kept the truth hidden. Gol was convinced to participate in this deception by their agreement to let him learn more about these newfound abilities from somebody they considered ‘safe’.

After much searching, Gol’s father was able to obtain the services of an aging Matukai instructor named Venn-Izar. The Matukai were a nomadic Force tradition, lacking the rigid organisation of other groups like the Jedi, as well as much of the ideological baggage that came with them. Gol was excited to learn from Venn-Izar, and took to his training with gusto. The discipline he learned from this had knock-on effects, and he began to devote more time and effort to his studies in general. For several years he trained with Venn, learning the meditational exercises and growing his abilities in the Force. His relationships with his family improved as well, and as he reached his teen years he began to spend time with his parents at work, learning about starships as well as the arts of business. Those were good years for Gol. Inevitably, however, things changed.

Venn’s training was growing more advanced, spreading into more philosophical aspects of the Force. It was at this point that Gol learned about the Dark Side. Naturally curious, he asked his instructor many questions, but Venn was preoccupied with shielding his student from it rather than teaching him about it. Gol, of course, went off alone to learn more. He discovered the existence of the Sith, and other religions that delved into the Dark Side. He began to grow dissatisfied with Venn’s training, knowing there was an entire side of the Force that he was not being taught about. Tension grew between instructor and student, til eventually it reached boiling point.

Angry with Venn for - as he saw it - restricting his growth, Gol lashed out in a sparring session, unintentionally drawing upon the Dark Side for the first time. He struck his master with Force-enhanced strikes again and again. He was thrilled with the power afforded to him by darker emotions, each blow was cathartic, intoxicating. His elation was short-lived, however. Venn-Izar was still a master in the art of Matukai, while Gol hadn’t even crafted his own wan-shen. Venn broke Gol’s arm and forced him to submit, ending their training session with Gol’s humiliating defeat. Enraged by this, Gol refused to study under him any longer. Shortly thereafter, Venn-Izar left Epica, never to return.

Now without guidance, and fast approaching adulthood, Gol began to seek out knowledge of the Force on his own. Such lore was hard to come by outside the academies of orders like the Jedi, but Gol’s obsession made him resourceful. He turned his Force-enhanced abilities to the world of swoop racing, making a name for himself on the underground circuits as ‘The Shadowrunner’. The prize money was used to fund his acquisition of Dark Side knowledge. He procured maps marking ancient holy sites and force nexuses, the journal of a supposed fallen Jedi and various other esoteric scraps of lore. For the next few years of his life, he was consumed with study, and dreams of leaving Epica to pursue a deeper understanding. His parents knew none of this, however. To them, he was no less a model son than when Venn-Izar had still instructed him.

Soon enough, he came of age, taking a position in the family business as a representative. His proud parents gifted him with a ship to demonstrate the quality of their products and sent him off to meet with clients across the sector. Before long, Gol spent most of his time away from Epica. They assumed he was off living the high life of a young businessman, but the truth would have pleased them far less. Gol was using the starship and the funds gained from his role in the company to pursue forbidden knowledge of the Force. He met with black market traders to procure artefacts, followed ancient maps to sites of Dark Side energy and explored the ruins of long-abandoned temples.

As his knowledge grew, so too did his obsession with accumulating more. He absorbed whatever fragmentary teachings he could dig up voraciously, while spending more and more time immersing himself in the Dark Side. Much of his power was self-taught through long hours of experimentation, branching out beyond the physical abilities his Matukai training had given him. He learned mental abilities including telekinesis and even the ability to influence the minds of others. Yet still, he was not satisfied. He was addicted, his life consumed by the quest for power.

So consumed was he, that when his father died and passed down ownership of HyperLux to him, he barely paused in his pursuit. After a token appearance at the funeral, he quietly made arrangements for an executive to handle the running of the company, and left Epica once again. HyperLux provided a useful source of wealth, and he kept an eye on financial reports, but otherwise left its operation to others.

Decades of searching had left him the last of the Dorren family, far from home and with little in the way of friends. None of that concerned Gol Dorren, however. All that mattered was the Dark Side and the power he could gain through it.

SHIP:
The Banshee is a custom-built HyperLux starship, heavily modified in the years since its construction with additional defenses and weapon systems:

Outfitted with wing-mounted Turbolasers, twin nose-mounted proton torpedo launchers, plus dorsal and ventral twin-linked laser turrets; The Banshee is a far more aggressive ship now than when it was first launched. Originally a luxury starship, equipped for speed, comfort and style; it has since become more akin to a heavy starfighter. It comes equipped with a large communications room featuring a holoprojector, conference room, small medbay, crew cabins and two moderately-sized cargo bays, one of which is used primarily for physical exercise. While originally there were more luxury facilities, they have long since been sacrificed to make room for the ship’s added weapons and the necessary power systems. The ship can still comfortably transport a crew of seven, though Gol’s only company on most voyages are droids.

EQUIPMENT:

Aside from the aforementioned tunic and cloak, Gol normally carries an assortment of items to assist him in his adventures. His right armguard comes with a built-in comlink that allows him to contact his ship or any other frequency he has access to. In his utility belt he carries a variety of small mission-specific items such as glow-rods and ration packs, along with his almost constant companion: A custom datapad with integrated imager, allowing him to refer to information on the go and create detailed holographic records of anything he may find while exploring.

In terms of weapons and tools, Gol always carries a small survival knife sheathed on the inside of his boot for both defense and its multi-tool applications. He also carries a metal quarterstaff composed of plasteel and reinforced with turadium for combat. The turadium plating provides partial resistance to lightsabers, though it will not survive prolonged exposure or repeated strikes to the same area. The staff can be dismantled into smaller sections when not needed, though it takes time to re-assemble. The staff is his primary weapon, being well-suited to the Matukai fighting style; which often focused on polearms and was the foundation of his training in the Force and martial arts.

FORCE ABILITIES:
Gol’s understanding of the Force is best described as ‘patchy’. Though he has a strong foundation of Matukai techniques, he has supplemented it with personal experimentation and the fragmentary lore he has been able to scavenge or steal in his travels. As a result, his abilities are a somewhat eclectic mix, and in some cases poorly-understood on his part.
