Colette
Return to Roots
The fire’s crackle was a welcome change from the day’s busy drone. Tired eyes nearly glossed over from the warmth, memories faded in and out of mind. The last few whiles had been full of busy work to get a better grip on things and in some part to get her feet back on the ground again.
Yes, the Sith remained. Yes, she felt the urge to do more. No, she didn’t let herself get swept back into it just yet. While her time since leaving the Jedi Order and the Republic as a whole had been tumultuous at first, it had also brought with it that strange kind of peace she had sought from the start. A moment of reflection that was solely her own.
It had been all gas and no brakes ever since her time in the Alliance. Always the next thing, always a bigger task to shoulder, always some grander cause to chase. Now that she held practically none of it she found herself at odds with what it meant to simply be alive. Or at least alive in the sense that she had thought that ‘being alive’ meant.
To just exist in a group was to be alive, and for the last few months that was exactly what she had done. Existed, in a group, that traveled. On many levels it reminded her of home and the happy memories she had of simply wandering the desert. But more than that the palpable sense of actual change that she could have on the lives of these people brought with it a joy that something like the Order could never have scratched.
It was admittedly a short-term kind of joy, but in the end that mattered more to her than the long run. She had seen the joy of outcasts finding happiness together by simply traveling planet to planet in order to help with a variety of problems that were both big and small. Protection hunts, harvest assistance, and a host of things that had a more immediate effect on the people around them. No money, no budgets, just help for the sake of help.
Colette’s thoughts wandered to her other home, the one with
Valery Noble
and
Kahlil Noble
and the kids. Of
Corazona von Ascania
,
Makko Vyres
, and Lucy. For now they would be the only ones who even knew where Colette was. She wasn’t ready to stick her head in the water to see how long she could hold her breath just yet.
As for the rest, Aiden, Lily, Ala, even Acier, there was no doubt in her mind they’d find their ways without her. To assume anything else was an insult, they had been making ways long before they even knew of Colette. Besides, Aiden had his family. Lily had a whole Order of her own, as did Ala. Acier was the most clever of them all, but she’d never tell him that.
A distant voice caught her attention and snapped her out of the morose mood. They beckoned her over to the bigger fire, away from any and all galactic politics or mind ghosts.
“Coming!” Colette yelled back and pushed herself back on her feet.
It would be a while longer yet, and maybe she never ever would, but as far as Colette was concerned her part in so-called ‘galactic society’ had come to an end. For now. Until whatever fate had in store for her came knocking on the flap of her tent.
