Private Ghosts of the Clone Wars

Iandre listened as Galen described the simple relief he'd found in a hot shower, and she could understand more of it than he might have expected. There had been something strangely restorative about ordinary things when she'd first awakened. Warm water. Clean clothes. A meal that wasn't measured according to what her body could tolerate. Things so mundane they barely deserved notice until nearly everything familiar had been stripped away. If a shower had helped Galen feel a little more like himself, she wasn't going to question it.

His willingness to submit to a medical examination settled one concern, although his reasoning earned a slight shake of her head. "I'd prefer you didn't keel over and die for considerably more reasons than making me feel better." The humor was mild, but her expression became more serious as he continued. He was right about one thing. If they intended to do this together, she needed to trust that he wasn't concealing some physical consequence of his awakening merely because he wanted to reach Coruscant more quickly. "All right. We'll arrange an examination before Coruscant. If they clear you, I'll have one less reason to worry that your determination is carrying you farther than your body can manage."

Then he mentioned Aisha, and Iandre went very still. For a moment the cockpit around her seemed to recede beneath the soft hum of the ship and the endless light of hyperspace beyond the viewport. She had become accustomed to hearing Aisha's name spoken in the past tense. She could usually carry it now without the old grief reaching quite so deeply. Nine hundred years was an absurd distance to place between herself and the woman who had raised her within the Order, even if most of those centuries had passed without Iandre consciously experiencing them. Galen, however, had made Aisha feel close again. A memorial. A record. Something left behind besides the lightsaber she had recovered.

The possibility caught somewhere in her chest, and Iandre turned her face toward the viewport before the emotion could be hidden entirely. Her eyes burned. She blinked once, but it wasn't enough, and a tear escaped before she brushed it away with the side of her thumb. "Don't promise me that." There was no anger in the words. Her voice was simply quieter than before, roughened around the edges in a way Galen hadn't heard from her. "I know you aren't trying to. If there is something there, I want to know. More than I probably should. I just can't go into that place expecting her to have left something for me."

There were things about Aisha that Iandre had never needed a record to tell her. She knew how her Master had felt about her because she had been there at the end. Aisha had died saving her life. There was no mystery hidden across nine centuries about whether she'd cared, whether she'd chosen her Padawan, or whether she'd known Iandre was alive. She had made that choice knowing exactly what it would cost, and Iandre had been the one left behind to live because of it.

That certainty had never made losing her easier. If anything, there were moments when it made the grief harder to carry. Iandre could still remember Aisha as she had been rather than as some distant figure from Jedi history. Her voice. Her presence. The woman who had taught her, corrected her, protected her and, when the moment came, valued Iandre's life enough to give up her own. Finding a message or a record wouldn't answer whether Aisha had loved her. Ian already knew that. What frightened her was the possibility of unexpectedly hearing her Master's voice again, seeing an image recorded before everything fell apart, or discovering words Aisha had never expected her Padawan to hear.

Her composure returned slowly rather than all at once. Perhaps what hurt most was that this wasn't the first time she'd learned how to continue after losing someone who had occupied an enormous part of her life. She had awakened to a galaxy where everyone else she'd known was long dead, eventually found her footing, and somehow built another life from what remained. Then there had been Rellik. She had allowed herself to imagine years with him rather than merely survive the ones she'd been given, only for him to disappear too. Time had dulled that grief. She could think of him now without feeling as though something inside her had been torn open again, but there were still days when sorrow arrived without invitation.

Yet even that loss hadn't been the end of her life. Somewhere along the way, Judah had become part of it. There were no promises between them about what came next and no certainty that what they were building would become anything more than what it was now. Iandre wasn't asking for either. She simply knew that she cared about him, that she looked forward to seeing him, and that lately she had begun to hope there would continue to be a next time. After Rellik, allowing herself that hope had taken more courage than she generally admitted. Perhaps that was part of healing too. Not forgetting the people she'd lost, but refusing to let their absence convince her there was no room left to care deeply for anyone who remained.

"I had lost everyone once when I woke up. Just like you." Her gaze dropped briefly toward her hands. "Then I built another life, and I lost Rellik too." She swallowed and gave herself another moment before continuing. "I'm better than I was. With both of them. Most days, considerably better. I'm even beginning to find things I want again." A faint warmth touched the sorrow in her expression, though she didn't explain the thought any further. "But sometimes it still hurts."

There was no shame in admitting it. Perhaps once there would have been. Now Iandre merely allowed the truth to exist between them before taking another breath and settling back into her seat. "So we'll go. We'll look for Windu, and Yoda, and whatever records survived. And if there is something of Aisha there, I'll face that when we find it." A faint, fragile smile finally returned. "Just don't expect me to be particularly graceful about it if we do."

With Galen's agreement to an examination, there was no longer much reason to postpone a decision she'd been considering since leaving Boz Pity. Iandre turned toward the navigation controls and brought up their present course. Aurora Station had been sitting at the back of her thoughts ever since Galen collapsed. It was where she'd spent those first difficult months after her own awakening, where people had helped put her back together when she'd been barely capable of understanding the galaxy she'd awakened into. She hadn't wanted to immediately surround Galen with strangers when time and rest might have been more useful. Now that he was willing to be examined, however, the choice seemed considerably simpler.

"There's somewhere I want to take you first." Her fingers moved across the controls as she entered Aurora Station into the navigation system and began adjusting their route. "It's where I recovered after I woke up. They already have experience with at least two people who slept through most of a millennium, which is more than I can say for the average medical facility." There was a little more humor in her voice now. "We'll get you checked there. After that, assuming nobody finds something alarming, we can start worrying about Coruscant."

Galen's sudden declaration that they needed a droid caught her sufficiently off guard that some of the lingering heaviness finally gave way to amusement. Her gaze moved briefly around the cockpit before returning to him. "The ship doesn't actually need one. Its navigation and flight systems manage perfectly well without an astromech." Still, the idea wasn't entirely without merit. Whatever remained beneath the old Jedi Temple had survived centuries of occupation, destruction, rebuilding, and neglect, and they had no idea what condition its systems might be in.

"But you may have a point about bringing one with us." Iandre considered the idea before giving a small nod. "A droid capable of interfacing with old systems could be useful if we find sealed archives or infrastructure we can't access ourselves. It doesn't have to be an astromech simply because Anakin had Artoo, though."

Her eyes returned to the streaming light beyond the viewport as the adjusted course settled into the navigation system. Aurora Station first. A medical examination, time for Galen to recover, and perhaps a little more opportunity for him to understand the galaxy he'd awakened into. Coruscant would still be there afterward, along with whatever waited beneath the Temple.

And perhaps something of Aisha. The thought still hurt. Iandre let it. This time, she didn't look away.

Galen Paven Galen Paven

Galen had sat there next to her and smiled slightly. He knew that she wanted to make sure he was 100% and when she had said she prefered he NOT keel over, that was a good thing. I mean, He said it as a joke but he knew she would prefer he still be aline, especially since they were around from the same time period. Yes, they never met each other, fought together or even encountered each other but now, it was imperative that they stick together now and keep each other close!

"
Aurora Station sounds like a place that I need to go then! If they handled your awakening, then ya know, its the place for me. I want to make sure that I am fit, enough, to take this mission on. I garauntee that it is not going to be easy! It is going to be hard, rough and, well, almost impossiboe. Especially since you say that the Sith have taken over the Temple. It is just something that we need to be 100% with."

Galen had sat back as she went on about her losing the people close to her. He knew it couldnt of been easy to wake up here, 900 years later, and losing Aisha but then when she lost loved ones, that struck a cord. Galen had lost his Masters, as Iandre had, plus he lost someone he fell in love with. He knew Jedi were not supposed to fall in love, but Galen, before he had been put into hibernation, had managed to fall in love with a Twi'Lek. She was a Bounty Hunter and Galen had spent many a nights with her. Her name was Aayla. She had been tasked to capture a CIS Operator and they ended up running into each other.

"
I understand the losing someone. I had done something that was against the Jedi code. I fell in love, and also, well, she was a bounty hunter. She was looking for a CIS Agent that I was tasked to gather information from and she was, well, tasked to kill him. We managed to work togerher and, well, somehow, we kind of fell for each other. She paired and worked together a good bit and, I also, had stayed with her on Tatooine at her dwelling. We also shared a ship. The night Yoda had taken me to , what i thought was Dantooine, or maybe it was Dantooine and I was brought to Boz Pity, but I digress, but the night I was taken to hibernation, We we sert to meet on Coruscant. She was in trouble and I was to get her out of the war-torn area and set her up deeper into the galaxy but I never showed up. Obviously, I was put into hibernation."

Jedi were not supposed to even think about love or falling in love but it had happened. Galen had knew a secret about Obi-Wan Kenobi about himself and Dutchess Satine. He knew that they had a fling and also were in love but She had been killed and that just shunned Obi-Wan from love all together and stayed even more true to the Jedi way. Galen had just accepted that she was long gone and, well , technically, so was Galen.

"
I just hoped that she had got out of the area and died happy and as happy as she was as a bounty hunter." Galen had switched gears a bit now and when Iandre had mentioned the droid, Galen nodded "Yes, the droid is going to essential to get into the older systems down below the temple. Its going to be, more than likely, are not going to be upgraded. So a droid that can get into these systems. preferably a Protocol Droid but an astromech would work. Protocol droids can also double as temple workers. We also may need to want to try and get Temple outfits to maybe fit in. But we will figure that out once we leave Auroa Station."

Galen sart there for a minute again and just looked at the hyperspace fly by in the window. Galen always enjoyed that site and he kind of just drifted off into "space"

Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea

Iandre listened without interruption as Galen told her about Aayla. There was something strangely familiar in hearing him describe a relationship that had existed somewhere outside the boundaries the Jedi had established for them. Ian had once believed those boundaries considerably more firmly than she did now. Life had given her enough experience with love, loss, and everything that existed between them to make simple answers rather difficult to maintain.

What struck her most wasn't that Galen had broken the Code. It was the ending. A meeting that never happened. A woman waiting for someone who, through no choice of his own, would never arrive. Galen had been taken away without an opportunity to explain, say goodbye, or even know whether Aayla survived whatever danger she'd been facing on Coruscant.

"I hope she did too." There was no judgment in Iandre's voice, only quiet sincerity. "And I hope she eventually understood that you didn't choose not to meet her."

She could have asked more. Part of her was curious about the woman who had apparently persuaded a Jedi intelligence operative to share a home and a ship with a bounty hunter, but curiosity wasn't enough reason to turn the memory over before Galen was ready. He had already offered more of himself than she had expected when this journey began.

His thoughts about their eventual infiltration received a thoughtful nod instead. "A protocol droid might attract less attention in the Temple itself, assuming we can find one capable of interfacing with systems that old. We have time to work out the details." She wasn't nearly as willing to commit to disguises yet. That depended upon what they learned about the Temple, who currently occupied it, and whether there was even a plausible way inside without pretending to be something they weren't. "Let's find out what we're actually walking into before we start choosing wardrobes."

The conversation faded after that, and Iandre made no effort to revive it. Galen's attention had wandered toward the viewport again, following the stretched light of hyperspace with an expression she understood well enough to leave alone. He'd had more than enough information forced upon him since awakening. If watching the stars gave his mind somewhere quiet to settle, then he could have as long as he wanted.

Iandre turned her attention back toward the controls. Aurora Station was programmed into the navigation computer, their course was stable, and there was little that required either of them for the moment. For the first time since she'd followed that ancient signal to Boz Pity, there was nothing immediately demanding an answer from her.

Her stomach growled.

The sound was loud enough in the quiet cockpit that Iandre glanced down with a faintly betrayed expression. Apparently her body had found something demanding an answer after all. She checked the chronometer and realized just how long it had been since she'd eaten anything substantial.

Her gaze shifted toward Galen, still absorbed in hyperspace. She considered leaving him to it before deciding that someone who had only recently emerged from nine centuries of hibernation probably shouldn't be permitted to forget meals either.

"I hate to interrupt whatever profound conversation you're having with hyperspace, but apparently I've neglected something important." A small smile accompanied the words as she rose from her seat. "You haven't eaten since you woke up."

She hoped he had the same appetite she did.

"Come on. The ship can manage itself for a while, and Aurora Station isn't going anywhere." She motioned toward the cockpit entrance before starting that way herself. "Let's find something to eat."

There would be time afterward for Coruscant, ancient tombs, medical examinations, droids, and the considerable problem of infiltrating a Temple controlled by the Sith. For a little while, Iandre was content to let both of them concern themselves with something considerably simpler.

Galen Paven Galen Paven

Galen looked up when she spoke to him about food. She was not wrong; 900 years in sleep and waking up, killing pirates and now on a ship heading towards a medical station to get an evaluation was enough to make any one want to eat an enitee Bantha. Galen nodded and stood up.

"
After you Iandre." Galen had follwed her towards the small galley that the ship had. He had sat down and looked back at Iandre. "So, chef, what is your speciality!?" Galen had chuckled as he looked at Iandre. Food was definitly something that was absolutely needed.

~~~~After Dinner; Few Hours Later~~~~
After they had eaten, they had gone their seperate ways into their own quarters. Galen had managed to get himself comfortable in the bed and he just stared a tthe dura-steel frame that sat above him as he laid there. Galen knew, the things he learned, the time that had passed and the people that had been lost, that things would be more different than they had ever been. Galen was going to have to learn, reintroduce himself with the past 900 years. what had happened, who had ran the galaxy, everything. Galen was at a loss. He knew that in this time, Jedi were thriving, Sith were thriving, everyone was back and, well, with a vengence. Galen just couldnf fathom it all. Eventually he will. Eventually he would just know what he needed to know. Galen had felt his eyes getting heavy, heavier and then, Galen was out. Finally asleep.
As Galen slept, he had past into a dream state. He tossed and turned and then he just got calm, He got peace. but yet, now he was awake. But was he? Galen walked down a small corridor, dura-steel, shiny, lighting just bright enough to see about 5 feet in front of himself. He would enter a dark area, then a lit one, then back to dark. Galen was just dumbfounded. Then the lights went out, Galen had stopped dead in his tracks and that is when he heard it. The deafening sound of what sounded like mechanical breathing. Then, that was when he saw the blinking red and green lights, small squares. Galen tried to focux his eyes and just as he did a bright red light had powered up. Galen got into his defensive stance, what was it? A red Lightsaber.
"
Who are you? What do you want!? What is your purpose here!?" Galen got no answer. The figure raised his arm, aimed his hand in Galen's direction and then that was it, Galen couldnt breathe. He raised his arms tp his throat and gasped for air. Force Choke. Then the figure spoke....
"
Master Paven, It has been a long time" The vouce had spoke. Galen had looked, besides like he was being choked to death, but he looked confused. "Whats wrong Master Paven, Do not reconize me? Do not reconize my voice? What is it? The mechnical suit, the life supposr system the Jedi had left me in!? What is it! WHAT1?" The voice got louder, angrier, and the grip got tighter. Galen knew this was a dream, he knew dream world was different. It was liek when he passed out and Master Windu and Yoda had appeared along with Master Aisha. Galen just just trying to figure out who this was.
"
Who......are.......you?" Galen had managed to squeeze out the 3 little words.
"
Oh, you dont know?! You were not around when the Jedi did this, THIS...."" the figure motioned with his other hand down his body ".....left me in this life support suit! Obi-Wan was a brother to me and HE DID THIS!!!!" The grip on Galen's neck had gotten tighter. Galen could see his eye site now getting fuzzy but he still fought. He had to get answers! Then the grip broke and the figure disappeared from in front of him, the lights came back on but, someone else, someone else stood in front of him.......Anakin Skywalker......."Maybe you remember this form. Maybe you remember who I am now. What the Jedi took FROM ME! FROM YOU! FROM EVERYONE!" Anakin took another step towards Galen. Galen caught his breathe and grabbed his lightsaber and ignited it. The orange glow glistened off of Galen's face. Anger had over took him but he knew he had to calm down. He knew he couldnt let go like he did with the pirates. "Oh......Orange. Thats unique! Master Kloon had Yellow, unique as well and you, Orange? Fasinating!"
Galen had stood up. He got himself into position, Vaapad. Only a few Jedi were masters of this form and he was taught by Windu himself. "
Again, who are you!? You look like Anakin Skywalker, speak like him, move like him, but youre not him and WHO was that before you!?" Galen gripped his lightsaber tighter.
"
Oh, you dont know! You were placed into Hibernation before all the truth had come out! Before the Jedi betrayed ME! I am no longer Anakin Skywalker....I....am....DARTH VADER! Second to Emporer Palpatine! I rule the galaxy!" Anakin chuckled as Galen just looked at him and listened "As for your "mission", I dont tell anyone this, but you must go on. You must succeed because if you dont, Galen Paven, the galaxy you now know, will cease to exist. I cant tell you how, Paven, but I can tell you that without the information you seek, without the knowledge you need, Iandre Althea will cease to exist, you will cease to exist and the galazy will fall! " Anakin got closer to Galen and shook his head " But, Galen, there is one thing I can tell you, one thing for sure that is knowledge to myself and the Emporer, the Tombs below the Temple on coruscant, contain the Lightsabers of the fallen Jedi. Windu, Yoda, Qui-Gon Ginn, Po Kloon and even an empty spot for Aisha. This spot, Master Paven, is the key to waht you need to get. All Lightsabers are in their places, excep tthis one. This one is what will be uised to open the chamber behind the catacombs, the tombs. This is your key!" Galen had blinked and all of a sudden, Anakin was gone. The hallway was gone and now Galen, his lightsaber and everything else, was in a black abyss. Nothingness. Galen was still asleep but awake here, in the nothing. Galen had turned around and , well, still nothing.
"
The key is Master Aisha's Lightsaber, its always been her, its always been Iandre." Then suddenly, Galen staeted to fall, faster, faster, quicker, and then BOOM, He woke up with a loud scream! Galen had looked around to realize where he was.....
Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea
The meal had been simple rather than anything deserving Galen's declaration of her as chef, though Iandre had managed to produce enough food to satisfy the appetite that apparently accompanied nine centuries of missed meals. They'd cleaned up afterward and eventually gone their separate ways, leaving the Conquests Agenda to carry them toward Aurora Station. Ian spent part of the next few hours going through the material she'd collected for Galen, organizing current galactic history into something resembling a comprehensible sequence rather than nine centuries of names, wars, governments, and Jedi movements thrown at him all at once. Eventually even that began to feel too much like work, and she set the datapad aside.
Ordinarily, meditation would have been the obvious answer. Aisha's name had stirred emotions Ian hadn't expected to feel quite so sharply, and sitting quietly with the Force might have helped her put some of them back into perspective. The thought lasted only until her awareness settled upon the faint vibration of the deck beneath her and the knowledge of the hyperspace tunnel stretching beyond the hull. Nine hundred years had passed since she'd entered meditation aboard a ship and awakened in another age, but time had done remarkably little to make the prospect appealing. Ian knew perfectly well that closing her eyes wasn't going to steal another millennium from her. Knowing and believing were not always the same thing. Instead, she stretched out on the bed with something deliberately unimportant to read, occasionally checking their progress toward Aurora Station and eventually dimming the lights in an attempt to sleep. Sleep proved reluctant, but that wasn't particularly unusual.
The scream shattered whatever rest she'd finally managed to find. Iandre was moving before conscious thought entirely caught up with her, bare feet hitting the floor as she crossed her quarters and entered the corridor. The Force reached outward instinctively for danger while one hand went toward the lightsaber she'd left within easy reach. There was no alarm, no weapons fire, and no immediate disturbance suggesting they'd been boarded. What she sensed instead drew her toward Galen's quarters. "Galen?" She opened the door enough to find him upright in bed, awake and visibly disoriented, and some of the tension left her shoulders when she saw that he was physically intact.
"It's me. You're aboard the Conquests Agenda. We're still on our way to Aurora Station." Ian remained near the doorway rather than immediately crowding him, giving Galen the opportunity to recognize his surroundings and decide whether he wanted her closer. There were some kinds of waking terror she understood better than she wished she did. "You screamed." Her voice remained low and steady, although concern was impossible to hide as she looked him over for any obvious indication that whatever had caused his collapse on Boz Pity had returned. "Are you hurt, or was it a dream?"
Galen Paven Galen Paven
"Who is Darth Vader and why is he telling me to go on? Why is he telling me that Master Aisha's Lightsaber is the key? Why is he saying he is Anakin Skywalker and was betrayed by the Jedi? I am confused. What does Anakin Skywalker have to do with my mission, our mission? He did say that Master Aisha's Lightsaber was the key to open the catacombs."
Galen had seemed like he was rambling. He knew that he hadnt left the ship and He knew that he was still in his quarters but what he didnt understand was why someone he had never met, never encountered would come to him in his visions. He had met Anakin Skywalker just a had full of times but who was this Darth Vader? Why did he turn into Anakin? Galen had way more questions than answers. He had no idea the entirety of what happened after the Clone Wars but it had to have something to do with this Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker. Galen had shook his head and looked back to Iandre.
"
I am ok, sorry, I am not hurt either. It was another Vision. It was just weird. I only met Anakin Skywalker a few times. Never fought along side him, never even went more than 3 minutes of seeing him. why would he, of all Jedi, come into my visions and another strange thing was he mentioned Palpatine. He called him Emporer Palpatine. What does the Chancellor have to do with this Emporer? Did I miss something pivital? I just dont seem to understand any of this!"
Galen sat on the bed after Iandre had come in. He was sitting there, dazed, confused and sweating. Galen knew that this mission was needing to be done sooner than later but he also knew that Iandre wanted him checked out to make sure he wouldnt just die on her. Galen now had to make sure that this mission succeeded with out a hitch and no one got hurt. Galen had looked at Iandre and she could tell that there was fear in his eyes mixed with dertermination and desire.
"
This mission is going to change things. For us, for the modern Jedi, everything. I dont know why and I probably wont know why until we open what we need to open. Maybe this will also get the Temple back to the Jedi and be the epicenter of all things for the order. I dont know iandre but this might be something big for everyone!"
Galen knew it was most likely a long shot but he alwo knew that if he didnt try, the mission would be a failure and he would have nothing more to do! That wasnt Galen Paven. That was something he would never do and now that he had Iandre, he knew the mission would move forward, maybe not perfectly but he knew it would move along!
Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea
Iandre's concern eased when Galen assured her that he wasn't hurt, but the names spilling from him brought a different sort of understanding. Darth Vader. Anakin Skywalker. Emperor Palpatine. For several seconds she simply watched him, and then it occurred to her how little Galen actually knew. She had spent years learning what became of the Republic after the world she remembered ended. Galen had awakened only hours ago. To him, Palpatine was still Chancellor of the Republic, Anakin Skywalker was still a Jedi Knight, and Darth Vader was apparently nothing more than the stranger who had just appeared in his vision. "All right." Ian moved farther into the room and found somewhere nearby to sit. Her voice remained calm. "I think we need to put Coruscant aside for a moment, because yes, Galen. You missed something rather pivotal."
She considered where to begin before deciding there was no gentle version of the history waiting for him. "Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader were the same man. Near the end of the Clone Wars, Anakin fell to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader. Palpatine wasn't merely Chancellor either. He was Darth Sidious, the Sith Lord who had been manipulating the war. He destroyed the Republic from within, declared himself Emperor, and replaced it with the Galactic Empire." Ian gave him a moment before continuing. There was considerably more to the story, but burying him beneath every detail would accomplish little. "The Jedi were accused of treason. The Temple was attacked. Most of the Order was killed, and Vader helped hunt down those who survived. The Empire lasted for decades before it eventually fell. And that is only the beginning of what happened after our time."
Her gaze lingered on him, sympathetic to the confusion without indulging the urgency that seemed to be building beneath it. "So if what you saw really was Anakin Skywalker, then the mechanical figure and the man you remember weren't two different people. You were seeing him at different points in his life." The part concerning Aisha's lightsaber was considerably more troubling. Ian had recovered that weapon, and Galen's claim that it somehow served as a key beneath the Temple was impossible for her to dismiss entirely after everything else he'd experienced. Still, a vision was not an instruction she intended to obey without question. "As for Aisha's lightsaber, I have it. That doesn't mean we're immediately carrying it into a Sith-controlled Temple because someone in a vision told you it opens a door. We'll remember what you saw, investigate what we can, and decide what it means when we have more than the vision itself to work from."
His certainty that their mission might change the galaxy earned a quieter look from her. Ian could see the fear beneath his determination, and she suspected the two were feeding one another. "Galen, you've been awake for less than a day. You don't know what happened to the Republic yet. You don't know the history of the Empire, what became of the Jedi afterward, or most of the governments and conflicts that followed. You have nine centuries to catch up on, and right now you're trying to decide the fate of the modern Jedi before you've even met them." There was no reprimand in her voice. If anything, the words were gentler for how much she understood the impulse. She had once awakened with an entire galaxy missing from her memory too. "Maybe what we're looking for is important. Maybe it changes something. But we don't know that yet, and we don't need to decide tonight that we're responsible for restoring the Temple or saving the galaxy."
Iandre leaned forward slightly, meeting his eyes. "This is why we're going to Aurora Station first. You need to be examined, you need some actual rest, and apparently I need to give you the most unpleasant history lesson imaginable." The faintest smile softened the last part before disappearing again. "We'll get to Coruscant. I'm not abandoning the mission. But before we walk into the heart of Sith territory carrying my Master's lightsaber because Darth Vader appeared in your sleep, you are going to learn what happened during the nine hundred years you missed." She paused, then added with quiet understanding, "Believe me, I know how overwhelming that sounds. You don't have to understand all of it tonight."
Galen Paven Galen Paven
Galen's expression had just hardened with everything that she had told him. Anakin had fell to the dark side and became Darth Vader, Palpatine was infact Darth Sidious, which Yoda had kept from him and the Jedi were treasonous? Galen shook his head in disbelief. He knew the Clone Wars were precursor to something more but he never could quite figure it out but now, of course, it all made sense. It was dumbfounding but Galen started to see things in the light. The galaxy was a messed up place. The way things had fallen just completely lost him. He knew that he was a special kind of Jedi, a clone, infused with Master Qui-Gon's force powers, somehow, but this all just made him feel insignificant! he thought he was part of a bigger thing but infact he was just a cog in a machine that was destined to crumple and collapse.
"
So all this, all that I was put into the Galaxy was, really, for nothing?" Galen had just shook his head. He knew it was just a lot now and Iandre was right, He needed to be checked out. He needed tests done and he needed to go and make sure that he was 100% before diving into anything. He also knew what she was saying about changing the new Jedi. he knew it was a long shot, but the visions, they all leaned that way. He knew it would all come down to just being their best. He also, though, was glad that she was going to stick by his side with this mission.
As far as Aisha's lightsaber, well, he knew just going into the Sith temple was plain dumb. She made a good point about checking things out, infiltrating, looking for everything and looking for what was needed THEN go and do what was needed. Galen had never really been one to rush in, especially since his main focus, during the clone wars, was infiltrating and essentially espionage. Galen had perfected his talent and work abilities as well as his force powers to create all to be his own but still, this was something that was just, nothing that could be rushed.
"
Once I get the green light from Aurora Station, we need to do a lot of planning. We need to really make this go off with out a hitch. I dont want you, or anyone that gets involved in danger, even though, this mission, is already a huge risk. We need to work this one up perfectly! "Galen knew it was going to be hard and he knew it was going to take a tremendous amounts of work. Galen also knew that in order for this to go off with out a hitch, that history lesson would have to come sooner than later. "I also know that what ever history lesson youre gonna give me will help me understand more of what we are about to get ourselves into. it will help me understand exactly what needs to be done and it will also get us to the point of being successful."
Galen knew this was going to be a LONG, winding, road.
The first question stopped Iandre more effectively than any of Galen's plans for Coruscant had. She understood where it came from. Galen had awakened believing the purpose he'd been created for still mattered, only to discover that the Republic he'd served had collapsed almost immediately after he disappeared and the Jedi who'd given him that purpose had been nearly destroyed with it. Still, she shook her head. "No. I wouldn't say it was for nothing." She remained seated nearby, giving the answer the consideration it deserved. "The Republic fell. The Jedi failed to see what Palpatine was until it was too late. None of that makes every life saved during the war meaningless, or every choice you made before you went into hibernation worthless."
Another part of his question troubled her more. "And you aren't only whatever purpose someone had in mind when they created you." Galen had already told her enough about the circumstances of his existence for Ian to understand why separating himself from that purpose might be difficult. He'd been made for a reason, trained for a reason, sent on missions for a reason, and then deprived of any opportunity to discover what came afterward. "Whatever Yoda, Windu, or anyone else intended you to become, they're gone. You aren't. You get some say in what your life is for now." Perhaps that was one small mercy hidden inside everything he'd lost. The people who had decided Galen's purpose could no longer decide his future for him.
His approach to Coruscant, at least, sounded considerably more like the intelligence operative Galen had described himself as and considerably less like a man preparing to charge into the Sith capital because of a vision. Iandre nodded. "That is an approach I can agree with. Aurora Station first. After that, information." They needed to know the current security around the Temple, what sections remained accessible, who occupied them, and whether the catacombs Galen had seen were even reachable. Aisha's lightsaber wasn't going anywhere in the meantime. "I don't think anything involving a Sith-controlled Jedi Temple is going to go perfectly, so let's not make perfection the requirement. We prepare well enough that when something inevitably doesn't happen according to plan, we have another one."
The promised history lesson earned a faint smile, although Ian suspected neither of them would find much amusement in its contents. "That part we can start before Aurora Station." Nine centuries couldn't be compressed into a single conversation, and Galen didn't need every dynasty, war, or political boundary committed to memory before setting foot on Coruscant. He needed the foundation first. "We'll begin with the end of the Clone Wars, Order Sixty-Six, the fall of the Republic, and the Empire. Then we'll work forward from there. Eventually we'll reach the galaxy you woke up in." She regarded him for a moment before a little sympathy entered her smile. "It's going to take a while, Galen. I've had years to catch up. You've had less than a day. Give yourself permission not to know everything yet."
For now, though, Ian wasn't inclined to begin recounting the extermination of the Jedi while Galen was sitting in bed after waking from another violent vision. She rose from where she'd been sitting and glanced toward the doorway. "The Republic can wait until morning." Her attention returned to him. "Try to get some more sleep. If you have another vision, or anything feels wrong, come find me. Otherwise, tomorrow I'll introduce you to approximately nine hundred years of terrible decisions made by people who were absolutely certain they knew what they were doing." The humor was gentle, offered mostly to take some of the weight out of the room. "We'll take it one century at a time."
The next morning Galen had gotten up. It was earlier than usual and Iandre was still sleeping. He stood up and went over to the door and made his way out into the dura-steel hallway and walked past Iandre's room. He went into the cockpit and sat in the co-pilots seat and grabbed a data pad. Galen had started to do a little research and according to Iandre it started with the Clone Wars, which Galen was apart of and knew what was being foguth for. Of course though Galen had been placed into hypersleep before or, really, just after Order 66 was started so he never knew exactly what had ha[ppened.
Galen tapped his fingers on the data pad and kicked his feet up onto the console and started to do research about the Order that had started the fall of the Jedi and the Republic. Galen had found some articles and he clicked on them. Galen had started to read the article and instantly was floor.
"
Order 66, also known as Clone Protocol 66, Protocol 66, or simply "the Order," was one of the top-secret contingency orders that identified all Jedi as traitors to the Galactic Republic and, therefore, subject to summary execution by the Grand Army of the Republic. The order was programmed into the Grand Army clone troopers through behavioral modification biochips implanted in their brains from creation, making it almost impossible for the clones to disobey the command to turn against their Jedi Generals. The Kaminoan scientists who designed the clone troopers believed it was only to be used as a contingency protocol against renegade Jedi. In secret, Order 66 was the means by which the Sith intended to bring about the long-awaited fall of the Jedi Order.
During the Clone Wars, the Sith agenda was progressing relatively unnoticed until a premature activation of Order 66 resulted in the death of General Tiplar at the hands of Tup, a defective clone whose malfunctioning chip caused him to betray his Jedi officer. The incident led ARC trooper Fives to conduct his own investigation into the matter, believing the incident to be a Separatist plot against the Republic. On the galactic capital Coruscant, however, he learned that the chips conditioned the clones to become hostile against the Jedi. Furthermore, he discovered to an extent Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine's involvement in the conspiracy and attempted to assassinate him. Fives told what he knew to his Jedi superior Anakin Skywalker, but before the clone could prove it, he was killed by clone shock troopers of the Coruscant Guard.
The plan continued apace for the remainder of the war, although the Jedi High Council had grown increasingly wary of the Chancellor's motives. In 19 BBY, a group of Jedi Masters sought to arrest Palpatine upon learning his true identity as the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. When their efforts failed, Palpatine used the incident to frame the Jedi Order for treason and, as such, forcibly compelled the clone army to execute their Jedi commanding officers in accordance with Order 66.
Across the galaxy, thousands of Jedi were betrayed and killed by their own troops while the Chancellor's new apprentice, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, formerly Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, led the 501st Legion in a direct assault on the Jedi Temple of Coruscant. With the exception of a few surviving Jedi, such as Grand Master Yoda, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, former Padawan Ahsoka Tano, Padawans Kanan Jarrus and Cal Kestis, and Jedi Knight Cere Junda, as well as Kelleran Beq and youngling Grogu, the Great Jedi Purge was largely accomplished through the initial activation of Order 66. Even after the initial onslaught, Order 66 still stood, and all Jedi, even people who were merely suspected of being Jedi, were to be summarily killed on sight, without requiring evidence or explanation as to why the kill was carried out. Sidious would go on to consolidate his reign as Emperor of the Galactic Empire, ruling for decades until the prophecy of the Chosen One came to pass, marking the end of the Sith and the restoration of balance in the Force by 4 ABY.
"
Galen was floored. He knew things had been bad but this was just insane. Galen had took his feet off the console and shook his head. Iandre had also mentioned the fall of the republic as well. Galen had tapped and clicked and found a few other articles about the fall. Galen just continued to read on.
"
The Grand Army of the Republic was led by Jedi Generals throughout the Clone Wars.[SUP][26][/SUP] While many heroic actions were taken by the Jedi and the troopers under their command, inspiring the public with stories of bravery, war weariness only continued to grow as the years went by.[SUP][80][/SUP] The Republic citizenry grew to believe that the Jedi had abandoned their role as peacekeepers,[SUP][100][/SUP] and staged massive protests outside of the Jedi Temple as a result. Despite their waning influence in the galaxy, the Jedi continued to lead the Republic's forces but sustained many casualties in the process. Their role in the conflict was opposed not only by civilians,[SUP][101][/SUP] but also the Republic officer Wilhuff Tarkin who wanted to revoke the Order's military authority, convinced that the Jedi Code was a hindrance on the Republic war effort.[SUP][102][/SUP]
Padawan Barriss Offee also disagreed with the Order's involvement in the Clone Wars, and staged a bombing in the Jedi Temple as protest, all while framing Ahsoka Tano of committing the act before being captured herself.[SUP][103][/SUP] The Separatist Shadowfeed operation, an attempt by Count Dooku to spread information on Republic defeats, making it appear as though a Separatist victory was inevitable, fueled public anxiety and consequently accelerated the militarization of the Republic over the course of the war.[SUP][5][/SUP] Palpatine painted the picture of military victory over the CIS being the only way to lead the galaxy to peace, justifying the expansion of the Republic Military in the process.[SUP][104][/SUP]
The war also served as a means for Palpatine to amass more emergency powers, cementing his position as Supreme Chancellor far longer than it technically allowed, all while continuing to centralize political and military authority within the Office of the Chancellor, which included putting the InterGalactic Banking Clan under the Chancellor's oversight.[SUP][4][/SUP] By gaining wartime powers, Chancellor Palpatine was effectively a dictator.[SUP][105][/SUP] The Republic itself was corrupted into a more war-focused state and used the conflict as an excuse to exercise authority over previously independent worlds.
Palpatine used the war as his reasoning for amending the Galactic Constitution multiple times, enshrining greater power in his office through his changes.[SUP][107][/SUP] He became the most powerful chancellor since before the Ruusan Reformations. Under the Reflex Amendment, he secured near-total power over the military.[SUP][108][/SUP] The Sector Governance Decree, passed towards the end of the war, gave governors sent out by Palpatine authority over neighboring star systems, all in the name of the war effort.[SUP][109][/SUP]
After nearly three years of constant warfare, the war reached its climax during the Battle of Coruscant, where both factions engaged in a massive naval and ground battle over the Republic's capital world. The confrontation ultimately saw the Republic dealing a severe blow to the Confederacy with the loss of a portion of its fleet as well as its head of state, Count Dooku, at the hands of Anakin Skywalker. Shortly afterwards, General Grievous met his end at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Utapau. Yet even as the Republic pressed on with the Outer Rim Sieges, determined to bring an end to the civil war, the Jedi High Council had grown increasingly wary of Palpatine.[SUP][2][/SUP]
Over the course of the Clone Wars, the Chancellor's wartime authority reached unprecedented levels at the expense of the Senate, some of whom also grew concerned for the future of the Republic. As such, members of the Council and the Senate began to consider their options for the preservation of democracy.[SUP][2][/SUP] The Delegation of 2,000 emerged and sought to petition the Chancellor to relinquish his emergency powers,[SUP][110][/SUP] whereas the Council contemplated the possibility of removing him by force and taking over the Senate in order to secure a peaceful transition of power.[SUP][2][/SUP]
Ultimately, their suspicion of the Chancellor was vindicated when Skywalker uncovered the truth: Sheev Palpatine and Darth Sidious, the Sith mastermind behind the Clone Wars, were one and the same. Realizing they had been deceived by the Chancellor, the Council attempted to arrest the Sith Lord before his plan could come to fruition, consequently leading to a lightsaber duel in which Sidious struck down Agen Kolar, Saesee Tiin, and Kit Fisto before Mace Windu disarmed him. Given the Chancellor's control over the Senate and the courts, Windu deemed Sidious too dangerous to live. However, Skywalker, despite having performed an execution himself, argued that execution was contrary to the Jedi way, though his personal attachment to Amidala also influenced him at this critical point as he believed that Sidious could save her life.[SUP][2][/SUP]
In a moment of desperation, Skywalker disarmed Windu, which allowed Sidious to kill the Jedi Order's champion with a torrent of Force lightning. Having chosen the path of the dark side, the fallen Jedi Knight became Darth Vader and subsequently led the attack on the Jedi Temple while Sidious issued Order 66 to the Grand Army, causing the clone troopers being brainwashed into betraying and executing their Jedi leaders across the galaxy.[SUP][2][/SUP] The execution of Order 66 marked the moment where the destruction of the Republic was inevitable,[SUP][111][/SUP] although Maul maintained that the Republic had already fallen and the Jedi had simply failed to realize as such.[SUP][112][/SUP]
The Senate held an emergency session at the Chancellor's request. Sidious publicly denounced the Jedi Order; he accused them of plotting to assassinate him in order to take control of the Senate, and by extension, the Republic. Meanwhile, Vader undertook a mission to Mustafar where he personally executed the Separatist Council, at the behest of Sidious who betrayed and no longer needed them. With the Great Jedi Purge in effect, and the Separatists neutralized, Sidious proclaimed himself Galactic Emperor. The Galactic Republic officially became the Galactic Empire,[SUP][2][/SUP] and democracy was supplanted by the fascist New Order.[SUP][16][/SUP] While many senators cheered and applauded the birth of the Empire, Amidala and Organa quietly lamented the Republic's end. Vader deactivated the droid army soon after killing the Separatist leaders on Mustafar. The Clone Wars was over, and its conclusion marked the dawn of the Imperial Era.[SUP][2][/SUP]
Palpatine used the war as his reasoning for amending the Galactic Constitution multiple times, enshrining greater power in his office through his changes.[SUP][107][/SUP] He became the most powerful chancellor since before the Ruusan Reformations. Under the Reflex Amendment, he secured near-total power over the military.[SUP][108][/SUP] The Sector Governance Decree, passed towards the end of the war, gave governors sent out by Palpatine authority over neighboring star systems, all in the name of the war effort.
The Galactic Empire was something that Galen never knew would or could happen! The galaxy had become completely broken and ran by 1 Galaxic Emperor. Then the creation of Darth Vader to do his bidding and to do, basically, all his dirty work. Galen was dumbfounded. He knew that things had gotten bad but he didnt know that it was this bad. Galen continued to read on
Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea
Iandre woke later than Galen, though not so late that she felt she'd slept away much of the morning. For several seconds she remained where she was, orienting herself to the familiar sounds of the Conquests Agenda and remembering the events of the previous night. There had been no second scream to pull her from sleep, which she took as a good sign. After dressing and making herself presentable, she left her quarters and went looking for Galen, expecting she might find him either in his own room or somewhere nearer the cockpit.
She found him in the latter, datapad in hand and thoroughly occupied. Ian didn't need to intrude upon what he was reading to recognize enough of the material displayed across the screen. Order Sixty-Six. The fall of the Republic. Exactly where she'd told him they would begin this morning, except Galen had apparently decided not to wait for his teacher. For a moment she lingered near the cockpit entrance, watching him absorb a history that had once been his immediate future. She imagined some questions would follow. Perhaps anger too, or grief, or disbelief as one revelation led into another. None of them required her to interrupt him before he was ready.
So Ian quietly left him to it.
The mess was considerably less occupied. Ian found something simple for breakfast and made enough for two, along with the caf she considered increasingly essential to functioning like a civilized being in the morning. Galen might not be hungry yet, but there was no harm in having something waiting if he was. Once she'd finished preparing everything, she sent a brief message to his datapad rather than returning to the cockpit and disturbing him. "Breakfast is in the mess whenever you're ready. No hurry."
Ian settled at one of the tables with her own caf and breakfast, content to give Galen as much time as he needed. He'd spent less than a day in a galaxy that had continued without him for nine centuries. Now he was discovering exactly what had happened in the first hours and days after he'd disappeared, including how completely Palpatine had dismantled the Republic from within and turned the clone army against the Jedi. She knew enough of that history herself to understand why it couldn't simply be consumed like a list of dates and names. For Galen, these weren't distant historical figures. Some of them had been people he'd known.
She made a respectable dent in her caf while occupying herself with a datapad, deliberately resisting the temptation to check on him again. Galen knew where she was and knew breakfast was waiting. More importantly, he knew she was available when he wanted her. Ian had promised to help him understand what had happened after he disappeared, but she didn't need to dictate how fast he learned it. For now, she was content to remain where she was and let him decide what came next.
Galen had gotten the message and nodded to himself. He had finished reading and stood up and his whole body just shivered. He had no words. He had reaction. He was just there. He looked out the viewport and just got lost in the hyperspeed. He just stood there for a second and got lost, lost in the hyperspeed and lost in his own thoughts. How could one man destroy an organization that had survived thousands of years of onslaught and building and destruction? Not even Galen could figure that out. No one really could except Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker. Galen had just sighed. Galen took another breath and then headed towards the mess.
Galen had walked into thre mess and sat down in front of Iandre. "
Morning" Galen had looked at the food and then took a bite. Morning was all he said. His mind still couldnt process everything. How? Galen took another bite of his food. Unfortunately Galen could feel anger and feel his right fist ball up. O fcourse he didnt want another incident like back on Boz Pity so Galen, once again, took another bite of food and took a VERY deep breath. He unclentched his fist and just let it go. This was not the place to crush the walls around him. Not only would it destroy the ship but it would kill them both and that, well, was not something that either of them needed.
"
What I dont understand is how Palpatine was able to manipulate everyone, EVERYONE, and abl to destroy the entire galaxy, in a way, from the inside? And how, such a powerful Jedi, Anakin, fell for his debatchery!? Its dumbfouning!" Galen just knew it was just crazy. He took another bite of his food and just looked at Iandre. He knew she could of had some answer but It was just something he had to ask. Galen kind of had an idea but he wanted her take on it. She could see the pain in his face and she could clearly see that his force powers had almost lost control but eas quickly was contained. Galen just stared at her, contently
Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea
Iandre returned Galen's quiet greeting without attempting to fill the silence that followed. "Morning." She continued with her own breakfast while he ate, allowing him whatever time he needed to sort through what he'd just learned. There was something familiar about the stunned silence, even if the circumstances were different. Nine centuries ago, these people and institutions hadn't been history to either of them. They'd been their world. Reading that the Republic had fallen was one thing. Reading exactly how quickly everything they'd known had been dismantled was another.
She noticed the change in him before he spoke. The tightening of his fist was obvious enough, but it was the shift in the Force around Galen that drew Ian's attention most sharply. After Boz Pity, she wasn't willing to assume that anger would remain entirely contained simply because he wanted it to. Her own connection to the Force deepened almost instinctively, subtle enough that she made no move toward him. If his abilities broke loose, she was prepared to catch whatever he threw outward in a barrier or contain him long enough for the surge to pass rather than allow either of them or the ship to be harmed.
Then Galen breathed.
His fist opened. The tension in the Force settled with it, and Ian gradually released her own hold rather than maintaining it unnecessarily. That mattered. Whatever else Galen still needed to learn about controlling the considerable power he'd been given, he'd recognized what was happening and stopped himself. Ian didn't interrupt that small victory by drawing attention to it.
His question was considerably harder.
"We thought the Sith were dead and gone, Galen." Ian set her caf down, her expression turning thoughtful. "For over a thousand years." There had been dark-siders, fallen Jedi, wars, and threats enough during that millennium, but the Sith themselves had supposedly been destroyed. By Ian's lifetime, the Jedi understood their return intellectually, but not what it truly meant. "That's part of the answer, I think. The Jedi knew what the Sith had been. We knew their history. But knowing something once existed isn't the same as understanding what it has become while you've spent a thousand years believing it extinct."
She considered his question for another moment. "Palpatine didn't stand in front of the Temple and challenge ten thousand Jedi. If he had, this would be a considerably shorter history lesson." There was little humor in the observation. "He became Chancellor. He made himself indispensable to the Republic. He used the war to accumulate authority, and he arranged that war so the Jedi became part of the machinery that was slowly destroying everything they were supposed to protect." By the end, the Order had been spread across the galaxy commanding armies while public confidence in them deteriorated and the Chancellor accumulated increasingly extraordinary powers.
Ian's brow furrowed slightly. "People sometimes say the Jedi should have sensed what he was, and perhaps they're right. But sensed what, exactly?" She shook her head. "The dark side had been clouding things for years. We knew something was wrong. We knew the war didn't feel right. We knew the Chancellor had too much power. We knew Dooku was Sith. What we didn't understand was how those pieces fit together until it was almost too late." It was easy, nine centuries afterward, to arrange every warning into a neat line leading directly toward Sidious. Living through it had been nothing like that.
Anakin was more difficult. Ian had known of him in a way historians never could, even if she hadn't been among those closest to him. "As for Anakin..." She paused. "Power wasn't what saved him from manipulation. In some ways, I think it made him more vulnerable to it. He'd spent much of his life being told how extraordinary he was, while carrying fears and attachments the Order wasn't particularly good at helping him understand. Palpatine had years to learn exactly where those fears were."
Her gaze remained on Galen. "He didn't convince Anakin to become Darth Vader in one conversation. He gained his trust first. Then, when Anakin was terrified of losing someone he loved, Palpatine offered him the one thing he desperately wanted to believe existed: enough power to prevent it." Ian's expression tightened faintly. "By the time Anakin understood what he'd chosen, he'd already helped Palpatine kill Windu. After that, every terrible choice made the next one easier to justify."
She picked up her caf again but didn't drink immediately. "That's what makes Palpatine frightening to me. Not that he was powerful enough to destroy the Jedi by himself. He wasn't." Her voice remained quiet. "He understood people well enough to arrange matters so that, when the moment finally came, the Republic destroyed the Jedi for him."
Galen Paven Galen Paven
Galen knew of the Sith. He knew of the years prior of how they were a massive part of the Jedi's life. They fought, they manipulated each other, it was an never ending circle of treachery and blood shed. Galen sat there and listened to Iandre. He took it all in. He remained quiet as she spoke knowing well enough that it was all terrible. Galen had taken another bite of his food and continued to listen. He knew the war was a shame, Master Yoda had expressed it to him numerous times but for it to be this bad? Galen just shook his head slightly.
"
This is far worse than I would have imagined. How were the jedi so easily duped? We could sense things, we could sense the dark, the light, and everything in between but couldn't sense the rise of the Sith once again? I just cant fathom it." Galen had shivered. An order that he was so new to, so green to, created as an instrument of war, of infiltration, had been just, not so much cast aside, but left in the dark about how the powers of the jedi slowly diminished. Galen looked again at Ian "I just still cant wrap my thoughts around it all. Like I know it was bad and I knew it was just dark but this? This is just unquestionable!"
Galen took another bite of his food. It took a second but Galen was completely back to his self. He was calm, cool, his mind was racing a million parsecs a second but he was back to, well semi, tranquility. Galen just calmly looked at his food and took another bite. He wanted to understand it all but like she said, it has 900 years of history that needed to be worked. The Clone Wars era and the few years past was something that He knew was going to hit the hardest. Galen finished his food and sat there. He took a couple deep breathes and looked back at Iandre.
"
I think I need to research way more. Skywalker was just manipulated and it was terrible. I know for a fact that I met with Mace hours before his demise. It makes it all the worse to know that! He was the one that instilled in me that hyper-sleep was the best course of action or me and to not worry. A lot of good not worrying did!" Galen stood up and picked up his plate. He waked over to the dish cleaner and placed it in. he turned around and walked back over to iandre. "More research is absolutely needed" Galen walked out of the Mess and back to his quarters.
Iandre Athlea Iandre Athlea
Iandre let Galen work through the disbelief without trying to answer every question a second time. She understood the impulse to look backward and wonder how thousands of Jedi could have missed what now seemed so obvious. Nine centuries of history had the advantage of arranging events neatly beside one another. The people living through them had possessed fragments, suspicions, warnings, and a war demanding their attention every day. Ian herself had been among them, and she certainly hadn't understood what was happening.
"The Force isn't quite that simple." Her tone remained gentle. "We could sense darkness, but that didn't mean it arrived neatly labeled with a name and location. By our time, the dark side was already clouding the Jedi's ability to see clearly. We knew the Sith had returned. We simply didn't understand how close they were, how deeply they'd embedded themselves into the Republic, or how much of what was happening had been arranged by them." She paused, then added, "And we thought the Sith had been extinct for a thousand years before they returned. Perhaps that certainty made us slower to understand what we were actually facing."
When Galen spoke of Mace, Ian's expression softened. She could hear the bitterness beneath his remark about not worrying, and she couldn't particularly blame him for it. To enter hibernation after being reassured by someone he trusted, only to awaken and discover that man had died within hours and everything he'd known had collapsed soon afterward, was a cruel thing to reconcile.
"He couldn't have known, Galen." Ian didn't offer it as an excuse or ask him to feel differently. "When Master Windu told you not to worry, he couldn't have known what those next hours would bring. None of us did." Perhaps that was part of what made the history so painful. There had been a last ordinary conversation for every Jedi who died, spoken by people who had no idea it was the last.
Ian nodded when he decided more research was necessary. "It is. Just remember you don't have to understand nine hundred years before we reach Aurora Station."
She watched him clear his plate and leave the mess without trying to stop him. Galen had been awake in this century for barely any time at all, and already he'd been forced to absorb the destruction of his Order, the deaths of people he'd personally known, the truth about Skywalker, and the transformation of an entire galaxy. If retreating to his quarters with more history was what he needed for the moment, Ian could give him that space.
Once he was gone, she remained at the table with her caf for a while longer. She knew better than most that there was no explanation anyone could offer that made losing nine centuries easier to comprehend. Galen would have to find his own way through that knowledge.
At least, unlike Ian when she'd first awakened, he didn't have to do it alone.
