Velok the Younger
When I Was A Young Warthog
http://karanak.deviantart.com/art/Ironhand-314618435
Intent: To give the Fringe an equivalent for the low-altitude fire support role of the CIS Behemoth-class Heavy Frigate
Development Thread: No
Manufacturer: Iron Crown Productions
Model: Gehenna-class Frigate
Affiliation: Lords of the Fringe
Modularity: No
Production: Mass-Produced
Material: Durasteel, Transparisteel
Description: The Gehenna-class has two main functions. First, its armament is heavily biased towards the sort of guns that enable it to act as a potent anti-capital escort for the Fringe Lanyard-class command carrier and Finality-class supertransport. Second, powerful repulsorlifts and ventral/lateral weapons systems enable the Behemoth to serve as an in-atmosphere battle platform, in the manner of a far larger version of an Ubrikkian-made Floating Fortress. The vessel's profile is low enough that it can literally function as a repulsorlift assault vehicle, at ground level, without attracting undue fire from range. Much like an Acclamator-class assault ship, the Gehenna-class boasts actual landing gear.
Additionally, its hangar space can be wholly devoted to surface vehicles, which are designed to be deployed while the vessel is grounded or at very low altitudes. While the Gehenna is primarily a combat craft, it can be used for pinpoint insertions of limited numbers of assault vehicles into contested drop zones, while providing its own fire support. Its semi-fixed weapons emplacements are specifically designed for lateral assault, as in ground-level operations. This gives the ship a disadvantage against attacks from above in certain circumstances, but situationally appropriate use of the Gehenna can produce disproportionate gains.
