Galactic Republic Weekly News

'In character actions create in character consequences.'

This week's news has been dominated by the Invasion but it's fair to say there are enough column inches elsewhere to allow you to catch up on how it's going or give you all you need to know if you want to join in and want to know where to go.

So this week I'll cover a topic that I have been meaning to for a couple of weeks and those that know me will testify that any events of the past seven days were purely coincidental. Not unrelated but definitely not the driver.

So what do I mean? Im talking about IC story-lines that writers like to get their characters involved with. Well...and these are just examples and any similarity to actual characters is not intended...things like:

- Attacking the GM and trying to cut her hand off
- Attempting to assassinate the GM
- Being a Sith masquerading as a Senator
- Being a Jedi that's a business partner of a Sith
- Selling military secrets to the One Sith
- Being a Jedi that uses Force Lightning
- Being a Jedi that learns from Dark Jedi

Not an exhaustive list, but you get the idea. Is anyone saying you can't do these things? Of course not...but I'll return to that thought a little later.

What I'm saying is that in playing that storyline, you have to accept that it will have consequences. Attack the GM and the likely outcome is not going to be a telling off.

If you want to be a corrupt Senator that syphons off money, go for it - but sooner of later there are likely to be consequences. That's what RP is all about. Sell military secrets and you'll at best get a bounty on your head, and worst be tried for treason.

And the related point is that if your IC story involved others, it's always a good idea to check with them first. I've lost count of the times I've been asked if someone can assassinate me as they've promised in a thread they'll do it and their family will die if they don't. Always check these controversial story lines BEFORE you commit to anything IC.

It's the same if your character wants to attempt anything major against the GR. It's always a good idea to get the IC or OOC team on-side. Almost always we're agreeable to such a story and we can make it even better. But although it would be easy to say walk into a shopping mall on any given planet and take hostages, it would be virtually impossible to do this on say Ossus. What with all the security droids we have patrolling the grounds.

Does that mean you can't meet a Dark Jedi in secret at the Senate building? Again, of course you can if that's what your story is about. But then planting explosives in the PMs office would not be practical without a two-sided story. And just because nobody has commented on your double-agent Admiral doesn't mean they've avoided detection, it just means nobody has read your posts - not exactly the same thing.

So...I will finish with the message that it's your character and your story and you can at very least attempt to do whatever you want. But the higher the stakes, the more you're likely to be opposed - that's all I'm saying.

And given we're in the middle of an Invasion and we should be giving that our best shot, never forget to stay classy Galactic Republic...

- Being a Jedi that uses Force Lightning

This is something my character had learned but is now transforming it over to Electric Judgment. However, both powers are above her pay grade and I write it as so. People seem to forget that because you learn a more advanced power doesn't mean it's going to work the way you intended it to. Consequences....happen. For example, CJ has permanent burn marks on her fingertips always reminding her the dangers of using that power. She has even shocked herself while trying to shock another (NPC). One final note on this, she was in another Darkside aligned faction before coming over to the Jedi...so she is still learning.

Another power CJ knows is Force Choke....something associated with the Darkside and the emotions of hate and anger. I'm in the stages of filtering that power out for her since it's no longer feasible for her to know.

Which leads me to her species, Vahla. People have asked me how I can play a species that has the Darkside born into them and yet, be a Jedi. Easy answer, it's her own personal struggle to keep the Darkside at bay. She will never fall to the Darkside, again, and I have no intentions of her being a Jedi that toys with the idea of falling to it.

And [member="Corvus Raaf"], CJ will protect her Master from any assassination attempts. :)

Just my two cents but it seems you are only focusing on a single thing in the Republic and not the Republic as a whole. There are at last count 4 Dominions going on, plus a multitude of other things that while I am not saying need a paragraph in a weekly address but at the very least an acknowledgement of existence.

It's a valid point and if you check out these weekly updates you'll see I mention them often. And they're also posted on the front page of the Republic Faction site.

But if anyone wants to jump in, there's really only one active Dominion running - Mimban. The Antar one only requires 5 more posts.

But given the fact that if we lose the Invasion, we're likely to lose those planets even if we Dominion them, it's quite a reasonable thing for people to be focused on defending Telti.

And if there's something specific you'd like me to mention next week, please let me know and I'd be glad to call it out.

:)

A fair assessment and I am confident my point was understood and reasonably accepted. I am satisfied and despite my previous comment I did not dislike this weeks news post.

Thank you both for your time and response.
