Faction GA Senate Committee on Defense - Privateering

HOLOCONFERENCE ROOM ASSIGNED TO THE
GA SENATE COMMITTEE ON DEFENSE

Maldor took his seat in the expansive holo-conference room. It had been chosen for this meeting because the committee on defense was large, and not all members might be present on Coruscant for this important discussion. For those that were away, the Conference Room facilities included holo-projection equipment that would allow attendance via the holonet from anywhere in Galactic Alliance space. This was possible via technological means which Maldor could not hope to understand.

They were gathered here together to discuss the issue of Privateering. Most specifically, how Privateering might benefit the Alliance in the current conflicts with the Enclave and the Sith. Privateering, as a concept, had been explored within the Galactic Alliance before. However, war called for some harsher realities than had previously been authorized. The Galactic Alliance, in general, was loathe to put forward payment for heads taken and facilities destroyed.

But Maldor felt this was a great time to put forward explicit bounties for death- not only for the confirmed killing of enemy soldiers, but also for the destruction of vehicles, ships, and installations. The more weight of conflict taken up by privateers and bounty hunters, the less would need to be carried by galactic alliance forces. Among the trillions of citizens of the Alliance, there were surely tens of thousands willing to risk their life and limb in exchange for cold, hard credits.

That was a resource to be harnessed. And quickly, with explicit rewards for explicit goals. Someone had to set those rewards in concrete terms.

Here, they would discuss whether to post these bounties, and if so, what numbers should be associated with them, what targets should be rewarded, and what should be accepted as proof of death.

Grisly matter, for some gathered here.

For Maldor, it was one of the lesser wages of war.

He turned to look at the chair, Auteme Auteme , as only she could bring the meeting to order. If she declined to start proceedings, the matter would be canceled and there would be no discussion on it today.

Notably absent from this particular conference meeting was Natasi Fortan Natasi Fortan . Raphael had only just managed to make the meeting himself, though perhaps, not for the same reasons. A war was on. This, coupled with his injuries had kept him more occupied than he'd have liked, his step a little slower than it had been before the opening salvos had been fired at Yag'Dhul, Kiffu, Ukatis, and Thyferra. Though, even as history might write it, the opening salvos were probably those at Ryloth and who exactly had fired them would be all manner of debate. Useless debate thought the senator and Planetary Governor of Anaxes.

Connecting from his office at Fort Anaxes, Raphael's holo-viewer shimmered to life, projecting his visage across multiple systems as other members of the Defense Committee also connected. Of course, he was early. Raphael wore a simple military-style coat, atop which he had clasped a cloak. Normally he'd have opted for a simple, utilitarian garment but today he had felt especially cold. These wounds were taking a lot of energy out of him and his treatment and rehab schedule would be considered grueling by any evaluation. This war that had been nothing but an idea mere months ago had become personal.

Taking a look around the room he spotted a few of his colleagues, none he was terribly familiar with save for their brief meeting before the war declaration. The galaxy was an enormous place and with the war on his attention had been hard gained over his loyal kinsmen of Anaxes. To a detriment in some cases, he mused. With his attention turned on the matters of the home front, other responsibilities fell by the wayside and so his measure on the pulse of the Senate dwindled. No doubt he would become re-acquainted with it today.

By and large, it seemed the consensus had been to go to war and while Raphael had vocally spoken against such a measure he understood the logic in it, or at least, the logic taken to get to such a point. It was reality now, whatever the logic had been. As such, Anaxes had begun spooling up its war drive efforts, recruitment and enlistment already rising and the gears of production had begun to spin. The Mandalorian assault had done significant damage, damage whose effects had yet to be fully realized - as was the way of war. Today's agenda was only semi-related. The matter of privateers. Nothing new in the grand scheme of the galaxy, why send your own people to die when some goals could be accomplished by freelancers, mercenaries looking for a leg up? Practical though it may be, Raphael had his doubts and concerns.

Of course, he would have to wait until the committee convened to express his thoughts. It would be unwise to have to repeat oneself amongst colleagues and or rivals here on the committee. For now he sat silently waiting, regretting his decision to listen to his doctor's instruction of no caf.

"Senator Calgar," Maldor acknowledged the holo-arrival with a nod.

As the meeting had not yet been called to order, there was an opportunity for 'small talk.'

"It was good of you to make time for this meeting, given the difficulty of recent events."

Then he added, "I hope all is well with your constituency."

Maldor had not spent much time getting to know his fellow Senators yet. It was a deficiency he'd need to remedy. Nothing could be accomplished in the Senate without a network of individuals who could be counted upon. Such networks were built upon one conversation at a time, until a wall was built. A wall that could either shield you from mutual enemies, or act as a bastion from which to assail the rabble below.
