From Kessel to Kashyyyk (For Darker Criminal Types)

Former ISB Lieutenant Amon Garrith stood on the bridge of a moderate sized frigate, provided to him by Black Sun for an extremely illegal and delicate operation involving spice and Wookies. It'd seemed like years ago that Amon had been tasked with tracking down beings who were doing things very similar to what he was doing now. Before his beloved Empire had went the way of cowardly assimilation. Before Amon had abandoned the traitors with a growing sense of bitterness coursing through his veins.

Now he was out for himself.

"Landing." The Pilot keyed Amon as the vessel landed on the planet's desolate surface.

"Load it up." Amon keyed to the team which was waiting to pick up the shipment on the ground. The plan was to pick up the spice and trade it to a resident slaver for a large quantity of wookies, whom would be excellent for mining and soldiering work if properly indoctrinated.

The risk was high but the payoff was equal to it.

Amon smiled as the cargo was loaded into the hold.

Barrett Haskins, the infamous party man he was, had recently hit some rough times with his finances. He had all of his assets from his reign as ruler of the Black Suns but his accounts were frozen due to banking errors and the amount of people that tried to rob him blind while he was MIA, it would take some time before he convinced him he was the –real-Barrett Haskins. Until then he was forced to take up shadier business practices. It had been a year or two since the Corellian had moved a warm body but he needed the money and the Wookiees were likely going to escape anyways, it’s hard to keep a Wookiee a slave for long unless you have a lot of security. All they had to do was get the drugs and trade them for the Wookiees, the rest was up to the galaxy.

He had arrived at the spaceport before the cargo vessel had, it was unlike him to be early, but he had been up most of the night and did a lot of spice to keep himself awake. It wasn’t that hard to stay focused when you were on spice, but when you weren’t on spice, it was very difficult to concentrate. That was why Barrett had bought his own personal supply of spice for the mission, he figured he was already forfeiting and moral high ground he could have by moving live furballs, might as well top it off with drug abuse.

The eager smuggler made his way into the hangar when he heard the ship had arrived. This would be a job that would likely be done before the day was over… if they didn’t hit any snags, however when you were on as much spice as Barrett anything seemed far more likely than it really was. He figured there would be no problems, nor would there be any way his drug use could negatively affect the mission. Though in his defense, he had done enough spice in his life that he could always handle himself. He knew when enough was enough. “Terrible circumstances to meet you under but I am not one to skip introductions.” The smuggler’s willow colored irises were nearly invisible compared to the dilated pupils. “The name is Barrett Haskins.” He stretched out his arm to shake the man’s hand.

Amon nodded at the drug addicted smuggler as he approached him and gave a false smile while extending his hand.

"Amon Garrith." He said while shaking the former Crime Lord's hand. Amon gave the disheveled looking man a look over, making observations based on the files he'd read and those in the moment. Obviously on spice, seems friendly, probably a shadow in terms of power of what he used to be.

"How long's it been since you've done anything like this Mr. Haskins?"

“Well met.” Barrett could tell the former commander was skeptical of the smuggler’s competence. But Barrett was sure of himself, he knew he had seen much harder circumstances under much harder substances. To call him a ‘drug addict’ was a stretch. He was more of an enthusiast, not allowing it to get to the point where he would need it. There was only one thing the man was addicted to and that was cigarettes.

“I try not to make slavery apart of my everyday routine.” His reply was simple yet it explained that it had been a little while since he had done a job like this. “Though I doubt it has become much harder since the last time.” A prideful smile came over the Corellian’s face. He had a lot of fun proving people wrong when they underestimated him.

“What’s the payout?” He asked plainly, reaching into his coat-pocket to pull out his pack of smokes and pack them down.

"Juicy." Amon replied with a smug smile.

"Nice chunk per Wookie and depending on how many arrive back alive and well. The guards have been provided with the necessary stun equipment and know what happens if they kill one. On specific price, about one thousand five hundred per healthy young adult male, a thousand for the females, five hundred for elderly, and the big one, two thousand per child." Amon recited from memory.

"Our client is extremely interested in Wookie specimens."

Amon looked back at the datapad detailing the location and name of who was receiving the pickup. Obviously a buffer to whoever the real client was. Amon suspected a Doctor, given the interest in children. If Amon had a conscious he would have shivered at the implications.

Mm. The prospect of credits was very nice, the prospect of a lot of credits was far nicer. There would be no question that doing this job would leave an uneasy feeling in the smuggler’s gut for a while. But when it came to conscience, Barrett was aware but he could easily neglect it. He was raised by a General back on Corellia and that meant the end justified the means. If the end was hard creds, the means didn’t mean much. He knew what he was doing was not right and he was facing hard time if they got caught, but the spirited individual had seen far worse in his time than a jail sentence. Republic prisons were easier to escape than one might think.

“How much spice are we getting and trading to them? And for how many Wookiees? I’m interested in how this will go down. Do I need to have my blasters ready?” He patted the slugthrower and blaster pistol on his hips. It had been a while since they had seen real action, perhaps it was time to change that. The cigarette that had been hanging out of his mouth for the past few moments would finally get lit, his lighter’s flame engulfing the tip. A plume of smoke shot out from his nose. “I don’t suppose you smoke.” He said, referencing his disdain for spice but still offering the pack to the man in case he partook. Old military types often times smoked in secret.

"Enough to put us away for an Anzat lifetime. Honestly, it's better if you don't know, in case we get captured." Amon said as he took the offered cigarette, an old habit from his Navy days of which he occasionally partook.

He took a puff and continued. "On the wookies, about forty. Unknown types but even if they were all elderly the cut would still be enough to make a worthwhile profit. The slaver knows how to capture the beasts but he's not the most organized." He sighed and took another puff.

"On hostilities.... We've got heavy hardware on board just in case, given the size of this deal, but the fact that we're with the Suns should be enough to keep anyone worth worrying about away."

The ship was well underway at this point, stars streaking past viewpoints.

Barrett drew from his cigarette as he listened to his benefactor speak. It seemed pretty cut and dry, they would be getting some large amount of spice and trading it for live Wookiees all the while trying to steer clear of any authorities. He figured it wouldn’t be much harder than any of the other runs he had done in his time, though Wookiees were a species he had yet to haul. He was interested to see how they would react to their loss of freedom.

“I’m not worried about anyone who would fear us because we are Black Sun, I worry about those that hunt us because we are Black Sun. Kashyyyk is in the Republic’s space, and they are very strict about their slavery laws.” The smuggler was starting to come down from his spice high, he would need to go to the bathroom to replenish soon enough, however he didn’t want to cut from the conversation, there would be enough time in hyperspace to dabble in his narcotics.

“Although I’m sure you have considered that, sir.” The smuggler exhaled with a cloud of smoke. His cigarette was almost gone, as was his spice high. He may have come off as a little crass with his reply but he didn’t mean it that way, it was just the Corellian in him always making him sound sarcastic.

"Corruption in a time of expansion is even more rampant than in those of stagnation. Everyone wants a piece of the pie. I'm sure we'll be well off my sarcastic Mr. Haskins." Amon said with a wide grin.

"For now I recommend relaxing or doing whatever you wish to in your quarters. I shall be taking a nap." Amon finished before turning to leave the bridge and take his own advice.

"And thank you for the cigarette."

“You got it, Ace.” The smuggler called back as he turned toward his room, giving his Corellian two finger salute from the top of his head, the lit cigarette still caught between them. It was almost out at this point and Barrett would likely toss it as soon as he got to his room. It wouldn’t be that hard to redoes for the trip and then he could get something to eat. There was usually no appetite on drugs, but Barrett being the seasoned veteran he was had taught himself how to stay active and alive while using, as to not end up one of the statistics and stereotypes that plagued his profession.

The smuggler was caught betwixt his realm and reality, and soon the two would collide, the adrenaline was already pumping, he was hyperaware of everything. However there was always a price for drugs and after the mission he would likely crash hard and sleep for a day or so to recover what his body was missing…
