Cressida Tolliver
Character
Standing at the base of the broad staircase that led up to the bizarre stone edifice of the new Senate building on Fondor, Cressida Tolliver could see why her predecessor
Natasi Fortan
had displayed a certain lack of enthusiasm for the new home of the Galactic Alliance Federal Assembly. As far as Cressida was aware, Fortan had never set foot in the building, choosing instead to remain in her office on Coruscant and commute via holo to the Senate floor on what she had always said was principle.
Well, as the second invasion of Coruscant had demonstrated, principles were like prayers: noble, but awkward when the shooting started.
The whole affair had caused Alderney Square to reconsider keeping the Supreme Leader in play when the Galactic Alliance was allowing the Core to becoming a shooting gallery. Cressida Tolliver, apparently, was expendable, or near enough to be dispatched with a set of formal credentials in hand to present to the Chancellor's office.
"Shall we, Senator?" asked a voice from beside her. Cressida glanced to see Kenat, who had served as Natasi Fortan's Principal Private Secretary in the Senate and who had agreed to stay on to help Cressida get settled in.
"Is Kenat your first name or your last name?" Cressida asked as she mounted the broad stairs toward the entry.
"Ma'am?" He seemed taken aback by the question.
"Everyone simply calls you Kenat, but is there another name there?"
"Pietr Kenat," said Kenat as he fell into step beside her. "But I go by Kenat."
"That's fine," Cressida said. "I've said it before, but I appreciate you being here. Staying on, I mean, to get the office up and running. I know you've been with Her Majesty for a long time, so it's appreciated, truly." Kenat's lips twitched up a little at the edges and he remained silent. His gait changed only when the pair approached the members' entrance and he sped up to open the door for her before following her inside. "Thank you. Now let's see here. I suppose it's too much to ask for a new member orientation. Or a map."
Kenat spoke quietly to the receptionist on duty for a few minutes, having an animated discussion before returning to Senator Tolliver. "You've been assigned a -- er -- rather minimal office here. Basically a room to prepare for sessions. The main office -- where you'll work and where the staff will be -- is in a nearby building. I'll show you the former now, and later we can see the other office." He paused a moment. "The receptionist warned that there will be non-Senators and non-staff in the building. There are lots of visitors, ah, as a result of what happened in Coruscant and the rest of the core. Your call if you want to engage."
Cressida shrugged out of her traveling cloak and adjusted the high collar of her blazer. "We might as well. I have a feeling the Foreign Office is expecting me to be rather a rough diamond. I'd like to show that I can be polished, when it's appropriate."
