Braze had never personally met Ran Serys Ran Serys , though he'd seen her a handful of times at important gatherings. He couldn't recall ever speaking to her, and the thought of doing so now, of reaching out to a member of the Jedi Council he'd had no prior contact with—was, admittedly, a little intimidating.

Authority figures had always unsettled him. As an avid troublemaker in his initiate and hopeful days, he'd learned to keep his head down, to avoid drawing the attention of the powers that be. That habit lingered even now. Council members carried a certain regal air about them, something that made Braze uneasy in their presence. It wasn't the odd dichotomy of respect, it was that nagging, irrational sense of impostor syndrome... more now than ever. Like standing too close to a legend, where admiration bled into an almost superstitious reluctance to engage.

But Corin Trenor Corin Trenor had suggested that perhaps Ran could take a look at his slate-gray and jade-green Eshan charm.

You will find many vendors selling a pair of charms on the street. Each set is unique, but each pair is identical and meant to be shared between two people. If both parties are wearing them, and are alive, they will be slightly warm. If the charms touch, they will flare briefly, like colliding stars finally finding their way home.

It was his half of the pair, one he had gotten to share with Jasper. The only real, tangible connection he still had to his missing Master.

And so, never one to sit idle when there was a lead to follow, he had asked Phy Phy to join him and Corin Trenor Corin Trenor in seeing what Ran Serys Ran Serys might be able to glean from it.

Today, Braze had dressed simply, in dark robes that were clean and neatly put together, carrying with them the faint scent of rose oil. He let out a heavy breath, sighed, then stepped forward to knock on the door of the place where he'd been told to meet Ran. He'd agreed to bring the charm for their little quest and to meet Corin there.

Once a common tagalong to Jedi Council affairs, Corin had since fallen to the wayside of all Jedi business.

His name appeared only at the bottom of reports from distant worlds, beyond the reach of the Galactic Alliance; mere footnotes of troubles quelled and dangers silenced. An exiled ghost in a prison of his own making. His fractured bonds with the order were a barrier he could not bring himself to cross, yet they were the very ties that had pulled him back to the temple now.

Leaning against the wall, Corin waited.

It seemed he and Braze had become a matching pair in their darkly coloured robes.

"There's no guarantees this yields any results," said Corin with a characteristic bluntness.

It was an idea, a theory. If these two items were connected by means beyond basic technology, then the Force may yet paint the way to Jasper. Corin had been wrong in the past, preparing himself now for Braze to have what wind might have entered his sails to be knocked out.

"Sorry if I'm late."

Phyla drifted across the halls of the Jedi temple to link up with her adoptive brother and the man she had been informed by Pyf was an ally of Jasper. It wasn't much, but one person helping out was better than none. And better yet they seemed to quickly gather leads for them to follow. Corin certainly seemed to be an adept investigator. Perhaps this wasn't a surprise given his background. All mentions of his master she had found in the archives seemed to note that "Dagon" as he was called had a great deal of urban experience.

It was the sort of individual they would need.

"Thank you for your assistance, Knight Trenor," she began, doing her best to be cordial. "It's a service that shouldn't go unrecognized, even if all we find are dead-ends..."

The Shard offered a look of concern, a bit off but close enough to get the feelings across in her synthetic face. Her needle-like feet drifted to the floor beside Braze.

"I... want to apologize," Phy stated, "I was in a... bizarre state upon receiving the news. I needed time to... process my emotions. I intend to keep my composure for the investigation."

That was a bit of a gross simplification. She had been downright depressive, retreating to her room and doing nothing for a good week before she could even consider recomposing herself. Still, Phyla wasn't going to let that turn her into a liability. She had a particular set of skills that would be valuable.

If Braze even wanted her there. She was strange, not experiencing the Galaxy in the same way he did. Maybe that made her more of a nuisance than anything.

Perhaps more motivation to assist and make up for her seeming disconnected nature.

A knock on the door set Ran in motion. Her feet padded the ground as she walked across the chamber, and a loud thunk resounded as the security door’s interior lock disengaged. The door whooshed open to let the Jedi Knight Braze and company into the Chief Archivist’s Private Research Chamber.

“Welcome, Knight Braze,” She looked the younger Jedi Knight, her contemporary, in the eye when she spoke to him. She held all who attained the rank in high regard, and would not look down or talk down to Braze for his youth. He had earned that much.

“Phy,” If she remembered correctly. Ran had read so many reports from so many Jedi at all levels and in all corners of the galaxy. She thought she was right, but her mutant mind wasn’t infallible.

“And–” Her eyes went wide as they laid on a Jedi she hadn’t seen in many years. “Corin.” Ran said softly and smiled. She’d only met him once, but she would never forget him. His Master had done so much for her when she first came to the Order. He was one of the reasons she joined. Ran wouldn’t have been where she was, if it weren’t for him, and she supposed the same was true for Corin. “You look different.” She said simply before turning her back to them. “Come.” She waved for them to follow her to a wide central plinth and holo-terminal.

“You said you needed me to analyze an Eshan charm? Why? Spare no details, anything about it and your relations to it should help us.” Ran looked at Braze mostly, but asked all of them as they were all in front of her.

“You may place the charm on the plinth.” She instructed. The wide set stone gave a strange feeling in the force, almost as if it had been imbued with the gestalt energy. It felt inquisitive and curious, and knowledgeable. It seemed to be waiting for an object to be set upon it.

"There's no guarantees this yields any results,"
"I understand," Braze offered in reply.

He wouldn't throw a fit if this didn't work. There was a flicker of hope, a small ember buried deep, but he wasn't betting on it. In truth, he expected this to fail. Lately, things had felt increasingly bleak, his outlook shadowed by a cynicism that had crept in slowly. It had become harder to hold onto the bright-eyed idealism he once carried, even when he tried to offer his views, even when he tried to counsel others.

His gaze shifted to Corin, studying him with curiosity. Freed from the layers of grime and dust that once clung to him, he looked different now. Less like a wanderer lost in the storm, more like someone who had finally stepped out of it.

"I made this one for you. " Braze offered.

Braze reached into his sleeve and pulled out a small glass bottle, offering it out to Corin. It was teardrop-shaped, tapering into a delicate curve that fit easily in the palm. The surface was smooth and cool to the touch. A matte black label adorned the front with silver lettering standing out in subtle contrast that read 'Obsidian Rain'. The liquid inside was dark, almost an inky midnight blue with shimmering bits swirling with in, shifting subtly when moved, like a storm trapped beneath glass.

The top of the bottle was secured with a gunmetal collar sat at the neck, leading into a black mesh atomizer, adding an old-world touch against the otherwise sleek design.

The scent within was comprised of a rich blend that offered top notes of warm Clove laced with cardamom and a faint edge of elemi resin. The mid notes held an almost creamy leather accord, accompanied by a floral note of dark iris, and the deep, resinous scent of burning myrrh, rich and slightly smoky. The base notes held a woody sandalwood, accompanied by the earthy and masculine scent of vetiver root, and just a touch of sweetness brought out by tonka bean, that lingered softly like the last breath of a dying ember.

Braze shook his head gently seeing his adoptive sister. " It's understandable all things considering. " he offered gently. "But it's good to see you out and about. " he added. He knew very little about Phy in truth but he could understand and empathize with her grief over Jasper. He was however comforted by her presence that much came through his carefully guarded aura.

He looked up and stepped in when welcomed by Ran. "Thank you kindly." He offered a dip of his head in a small bow in a sign of respect. He seemed well aware to mind his manners.

His fingers fussed at the edges of his sleeves in a nervous habbit of self soothing displacement activity before he carefully slipped free a small trinket from where it rested around his neck alongside two others, nearly identical in shape and size. Only one, slate blue-gray with a touch of jade green, which he moved to place down for examination.

"This is it." He murmured, casting an uneasy glance toward the green-skinned woman. His fingers lingered for just a breath longer before he let go of the trinket.

"I picked up a few of these charms on Eshan during the summer solstice. They come in pairs. You split them between two people. If both still have theirs, and they're alive, the charms stay warm to the touch. When you bring them together, they light up… kinda like a friendship bracelet, I suppose." Braze explained.

His hand drifted back to his sleeve, rubbing along the edge as he hesitated before continuing. "This is my half of the set I got for Jasper and me. It's been a few years now since we got them."

There was no certainty that any of this information would help, but he laid it out nonetheless, his fingers still tracing the fabric in small, quiet movements.

He closed his palm around the bottled storm, the glass disappearing behind his garment layers. His lightsaber could be glimpsed for all of a moment, a weathered and worn weapon with gunmetal grey wearily turned black. Corin appeared almost uncomfortable with receiving a gift, able to afford little more than nodding acceptance.

Like a discomforted doll, Corin stared blankly in the face of Ran's comment.

His master saved them, once. Dagon's shadow hung over him like a reaping phantom, even now.

Listening to Braze, Corin added one last piece. His voice even, flat, devoid of both hope and hopelessness.

"If these two pieces are connected via the Force, then their signal could be tracked." He said to Ran, then turned down towards Braze. "In theory."

" It's understandable all things considering. " he offered gently. "But it's good to see you out and about. "

"Yeah..."

Was it good to see her? Braze didn't seem like he was being disingenuous. It was kind of her own fault he hadn't seen much of her at all. Braze was always out doing something, and her? Phyla was a bit of a recluse by nature, squirreled away designing new things to engineer. She had really ought to do better.

Braze and Corin gave the details of the charm to Ran, certainly a curious thing indeed. Phyla drifted up into the air to float above the plinth, all but positioning herself upside down above it to scan the item from a top-down perspective. If what they stated was the truth, the object seemed to be capable of displaying the status of its pair to inform one or the other about the wearer's status. It was a life-monitor. Ingenious, really. She wondered how the Echani were capable of making such a charm in the first place.

"If these two pieces are connected via the Force, then their signal could be tracked." He said to Ran, then turned down towards Braze. "In theory."

"You propose it can be followed?" Phyla remarked. "Perhaps... Maybe not unlike Chiss sky-walkers following hyperlanes?"

She shifted back to a more regular orientation, sitting with crossed legs above them.

"What are your thoughts on the charm, Master Serys."

Given her experience as a librarian, one with no doubt troves of historical knowledge, Phy was eager to hear what the knight had to say. It wasn't often that Phyla got to interact with a councilwoman anyways, so it would perhaps give her a better idea of their duties.

With the charm on the plinth, Ran set the holo-terminal to task. A blue light hovered over the charm analyzing the charm's chemical makeup and composition, and fed that information back to the holo-terminal. Ran hovered over the plinth and felt the charm's shape in the force, the sort of energy signature the trinket gave off, simple but unique.

Making sure not to interfere with the scanning process, Ran touched the item while the terminal was processing the information. It wasn't cold but it wasn't warm. She looked at Braze and understood it was warm to the touch for him and Jasper only. She tucked her hand under her chin while she continued considering the charm. In Ran's mind, the Echani were inscrutable and mysterious, and so too was the charm.

"I usually spend a lot more time with any item I study," She prefaced her next statement. "But be it holocron, artifact, or trinket, they all have one thing in common. If they are touched by the force, they tend to attach to those who use them, wield them, or wear them most frequently. This charm is no different and it has come to resonate with you, Knight Braze." The holo-terminal beeped an indication. The data had finished processing and the analysis was complete. Ran read the results out loud. The charm itself was pretty standard but had traces of a few force conductive materials as well as magnetic.

"There is nothing here that would indicate the charms are connected to each other in the force. Their connection to the siblings in their set is uniquely magnetic. I don't believe you will be able to trace Jasper by magnetic field alone. The charm's bond with Braze, however, we can make use of." Ran began to draw a crude diagram on the holoterminal. Four points with each point connecting to two others making a square. "Corin is right when he says the signals can be tracked, but only if you are up to the task, Braze."

"You have a strong connection to Jasper." She indicated the connected points on the square that represented Braze and Jasper. "The charms have a strong connection to you." She connected the points from charm to Jedi. "The charms have a unique magnetic attraction to each other." She indicated the points from charm to charm. "It will be a largely difficult task to track someone worlds, sectors, rims away, but by using the charms as compasses, dowsing rods, and conduits of the force, I believe, your task will be made easier."

Ran held up a finger indicating a moment needed and turned to a nearby workbench and pulled two small diamond shaped pendants from one of its compartments. She placed them next to the Eshan charm. "This is magnetized Slivian iron. I use it in much the same way as I am suggesting you do with the charm." She unclipped her lightsaber from her belt and displayed it to the Jedi in front of her. The hilt was made almost entirely of the magnetized metal. "This is how I track down ancient artifacts and powerful force objects." The lightsaber spun in her hand. Not from physical effort or force related telekinesis, but from its magnetic field being disrupted by the force signatures of artifacts in the room. One by one it paused to aim at Braze, then Corin, and then Phy. "People too." Ran added displaying the technique as she touched the lightsaber and its magnetic field with the force and her intentions.

"The charm is unique and will give you the most accurate information," She returned the charm to Braze "But these pendants should still help you, should you become separated in your quest." Ran offered the Slivian iron pendants to Corin and Phy. "Use the force to feel, focus, and disrupt the magnetic fields, introduce your intention and you should be able to accomplish the same feat. This is not a rare gift among the Jedi but it is a rarely honed skill, and may take some time to perfect. I wish you luck with it." Ran declared.

"Is there anything else you need from me, a question, a hand, more research?" Ran asked with genuine sincerity. She wanted to help the group in any way she could.

Braze watched with curiosity, standing back in sheer awe of Ran's wisdom. He paid close attention to everything she did, his focus intense. It was... a good sign. One that brought the small kernel of hope he'd been holding into something just a bit warmer, just a bit more solid.

He accepted the charm from her and tucked it back into place, then bowed, bringing a closed fist to an open hand in a gesture of thanks and respect.

"Thank you kindly for your insight and assistance,"
he offered.

Seeing it done—seeing it work—meant there was, in truth, a way to find Jasper. To replicate it might not be easy. But he was certainly going to try.

He offered a glance to Phy and Corin to see if there was any questions they may have had or plans on how to move forwards as they were given a Slivian iron pendant.

Corin accepted the ore with a curious expression, eyes settled onto the metal in his palm as Ran continued.

It could be useful. If not to him, then Braze. He stowed it behind the folds of his cloak, pocketed somewhere beneath the fabric. "No," answered Corin in the meantime. His gaze drifted across to Braze, next.

"To return to Ord Providence is the best lead left. Until then, train to sense, disrupt and follow the magnetic fields."

"To return to Ord Providence is the best lead left. Until then, train to sense, disrupt and follow the magnetic fields."

"Perhaps I can create something for us that will greatly increase the training process," Phyla noted. "If the idea is to focus on the bond between items, I can design a sensory deprecation chamber of sorts intended to maintain such a state. A 'Wayfinder Room,' you could call it. I'll need to do a little bit of research into the phenomena, admittedly, but the Slivian iron pendants should be a good place to start as far as the exact properties we would be looking to achieve."

The shard paused, giving a respectful bow to the Mirialan councilwoman.

"Thank you for your assistance, Master Serys," she thanked. "You've done my family an honorable service. I am grateful for your guidance."

This rejuvenated her spirits a great deal. A chance that they could bring Jasper back was enough to instill her with hope, and that was all she needed to press on. Phy turned back to Braze and Corin, a soft smile now having come to her synthetic face.

"I believe we have a great deal of work ahead of us."

"I'll see to it that everything's in order for a trip to Ord Providence, then. I'll train diligently until it's time to depart Master Trenor..."

He looked to Phy next, expression softening. "That would be great. I can find a spot on the Mud Duck for it that should work just fine." Braze offered a gentle nod. "I appreciate the assistance."

A heavy sigh escaped him as his shoulders went slack. It was progress and a small step forward toward hopefully finding Jasper. There was still much to do.

He turned to Corin and offered a respectful bow. "When you're ready, you can get acquainted with one of the cabins aboard the Mud Duck."

The reverence in being referred to as 'master' caught his attention wholeheartedly, as strange of a thing as it was. Perhaps it ought it ought to be something Corin should soon become accustomed to, after all.

He afforded a brief nod to Braze, then. "I will be ready when you are," he said in that flat voice of his.

There was nothing truly keeping him at the Jedi Temple. So long as he made good on his promises.
