Character
He considered the question longer than most.
His eyes drifted across the excavation, lingering on workers patiently uncovering fragments of a battle fought centuries before. Once, he would have looked at the same ground and measured it by tactics, positions, and casualties. Talia had taught him to see something else.
"No."
The answer was calm, certain.
"I have no desire to stand on another battlefield."
He drew a slow breath.
"I've seen enough of them to last several lifetimes. Every victory demanded another. Every war promised peace and delivered only the next war." His head shook almost imperceptibly. "I believed for a long time that changing the galaxy required defeating those who opposed me."
His hand tightened gently around hers.
"I don't believe that anymore."
His gaze settled on her.
"I will defend what we build. If someone threatens our Houses, our family, or the people who choose to walk beside us, I will not hesitate to stand between them and that danger." There was no uncertainty in his voice. "Protection is not the same as conquest."
A quiet silence passed before he continued.
"I will not seek war. I will not wage it because I think I can reshape the galaxy through violence. I've done that before."
His expression softened.
"It only leaves someone like you to sift through the ruins afterward."
The corner of his mouth lifted briefly before his attention shifted toward the cantina. He regarded the entrance for a moment.
"I suspect you're right about what's waiting for us inside. The truth is rarely believable when it refuses to fit the story people expect, but if they ask, tell them exactly what happened."
A faint smile appeared.
"If they choose not to believe it..." He gave a small shrug. "I'm not sure I'd blame them."
