Name: fern sanitas (Generally called “Sanitas” for short)
Homeworld: Origins: Kro Var though now it has spread across many parts of the galaxy
Development Thread: if required
Average Measurements:
Height: average, 1 ft/.308 meters, though they can be as tall as 10 feet/3.08 meters in rare cases.
Width: 3 ft/.16 meters
Weight: average 10 lbs/4.5 kg average, though they may weight more for larger specimens
Cultivation Requirements:
--Type 1 and type 2 atmosphere (breaths carbon dioxide, exhales oxygen)
--Water for ideal growth is 1 to 2 inches of water weekly.
--Nitrogen rich soil
--Grows best in shade
--Hardiness is a 3 (As judged by the agricultural community at large)
--Works best in warmer climates, suffers greatly in frigid climates.
Strengths:
++Healing sap: The sap within this fern’s has been used by many of the mystics of Kro Var, and their shamans. It works well against many of the average maladies that afflict a person such as head colds, fevers, sore throats, and so on. If this sap is condensed through a long process of boiling down the liquid it may be quite potent and good for helping heal more severe injuries such as cuts, broken bones, and so on through stimulating cell growth.
++Rather low-maintenance: While this plant is not impossible to kill, as long as it receives 1-2 inches of water a week and is in nitrogen-rich soil, and is out of direct sunlight, it will be ok.
Weaknesses: [2 Minimum]
--Requires shade: This fern requires shade. It does not do well in direct sunlight. Planets such as Tattoowine would destroy this fern, while others such as Hapan, will find this plant thriving.
--Bitter: as a defense mechanism the sap that makes this plant a healing agent, also tastes incredibly bitter. Many people forgo it because of this for Bacta.
--Doesn’t like to be domesticated: For some reason, this plant does not like domestication. All attempts thus far have failed, it thrives in the wild.
Distinctions: This plant appears to be your average galactic Fern, with the typical life cycle of a fern, the typical reproductive nature of a fern, and the typical appearance of a fern. An average person would pass this fern and think, ‘my that is quite the average fern.’ However, a botanist, a doctor, a shaman, or anyone who knows their alternative forms of medicine would look at this fern and distinctly know that it has medical properties in its sap.
Average Growth Cycle: This fern reaches maturity in six months.
Average Life:
--The average life of this biennial is 5 years.
--If stored in an air-tight container away from sunlight, this sap will keep for a month
--Undried leaves keep for a week
--Dried leaves kept in an airtight container away from sunlight keep indefinitely, though their sap losses its potency over time.
Nutritional Value: The sap of this plant contains phytonutrients that are encouraging for most species’ cellular growth. Note that while this is not applicable for all species (to some it would be toxic, given the diversity of the galaxy) it is generally able to do so for most in the galaxy.
The roots have a tuber-like structure that are high in starch, which can be edible but are generally lacking in flavor.
History:
fern sanitas, as most ferns, stepped off the evolutionary tree fairly early. However this particular fern thrived under rocky, shaded areas that were rich in nitrogen. Over time, the wild fern began to evolve its sap into a bitter-tasting substance to deter would-be predators from eating them. It was a highly effective defense, and soon Fern Sanitas began to take the corner market so to speak for its area of expertise. Eventually, shamans of Kro Var realized that this plant was able to help heal many of the common afflictions they faced. As such, they began to use and experiment with it as such. When Kro Var opened to the rest of the galaxy, the Frond of these prodigious ferns found their way aboard the ships. From there, they spread across the galaxy. In many ways it is seen as a weed, rather than the healing gift that it is. But the natives of Kro Var know its true purpose, and many of the galaxy’s freak lovers of natural remedies to as well.
Intent: To create a unique plant for the board to use as a form of alternative medicine and to flesh out the lore of Kro Var
