"Wild dogs and foxes… sometimes you may even get a bear or one of the larger cats. Things of that nature, usually," Vex offered softly. "Yeah, mostly farm life. Though it's rather nice to take long walks through the woods or along the coast. I enjoy exploring the wilderness and finding new hiking trails."

He took a few more sips, considering the quiet life he had carved out for himself.

"Coming across a bear is about all the excitement I really need these days... There's a great spot near the mouth of one of the mountain passes. I've set it up as a little shooting gallery," he continued. "Every so often, I head into town and pick through the scrap for new targets to haul out there. It keeps my aim sharp, and gives me something to do besides chasing hungry animals away from the hens."

A small smile graced his features.

"Nothing quite so exciting as hunting a Vuhyr'yaliyr for a final test, of course," he added, remembering what she had told him. Vex knew well enough that the quarry was rarely the entirety of a Mandalorian trial. "Was bringing the beast down the hardest part of yours, or was it everything else they made you do~?"

"Yeah, mostly farm life. Though it's rather nice to take long walks through the woods or along the coast. I enjoy exploring the wilderness and finding new hiking trails."

That sounded peaceful, nice even, but not something she could ever justify doing yet. Not while there was so much to get done. Maybe as a break, but surely not as a lifestyle and she told him as much, "As a break, sure, that sounds great, don't think I could do it personally as a lifestyle. Too...uneventful," she said after a moment of thinking of the right word in basic. "Not right now, anyway," she clarified.

"Static targets are great for honing muscle memory," she agreed with a nod. "But you need something that moves to really keep your skills sharp," she added with a smile. "Ever think of one of those solid state hologram training environments?" she asked "Though those bear things sound like they make for great moving targets," she said, tilting her head in consideration. "Now that sounds like a great time."

"The trick is finding it before it finds you," she explained. "You've got to get to the extraction point by dawn the next day or you've failed, and you better have killed one by then. It's...one way to select candidates. Hardest thing still had to be my verd'goten, though." She looked at his face for any sign of recognition to see if he knew what that word meant before continuing, "Had to get past my buir and his vode, basically everyone who trained me, to pass."

"That was.."
she started, hand falling to where she'd been grazed all those years ago by a Verpine Shatter slug. "...difficult." She said after what seemed an eternity. "What about your planet, any interesting coming of age ceremonies?" she asked, snapping out of her reminiscing after a moment to ask him the question.

Vex considered her question, his thoughts wandering back toward his youth. His buir had never been typical of the Mandalorians who lived beneath the protection and expectations of a clan. The man whom had raised him had kept largely to himself, moving without clan or banner, and Vex had taken after him in that regard.

He could hardly blame the man, considering the circumstances that had left him so distrustful, even of other Mandalorians. Not every Mand'alor was worthy of being followed, he supposed. Ironically, those same circumstances had been what brought Vex into his buir's care in the first place.

"Yeah…I suppose you could say I faced a similar trial," Vex answered after a moment. "I had to enter dangerous territory and bring someone home alive. It was certainly a memorable week…I had to put everything my buir taught me to use."

He turned the glass slowly between his fingers, studying the blue liquid as his thoughts settled upon a difficult truth: the man who had taught him honor was also the one responsible for destroying his first family.

Vex tipped the remainder back in a single swallow, then set the empty glass aside. By the time he looked toward her again, a quieter smile had returned to his features.

"I'm afraid I may be a little old-fashioned," he admitted, "but I'd be honored if you showed me how you keep your skills sharp."

He appeared in no particular hurry to abandon their conversation, ordering another drink and leaving the invitation open... There was still much he might ask her before the evening came to an end…and perhaps earn the privilege of accompanying her back to her ship afterwards.

"Yeah…I suppose you could say I faced a similar trial," Vex answered after a moment. "I had to enter dangerous territory and bring someone home alive. It was certainly a memorable week…I had to put everything my buir taught me to use."

The gears and cogs turned in her head. His buir? The familiarity with which he spoke about it. How real it was to him, how visceral it was. She could almost feel it. It gave her gooasebumps. Almost like she had finally figured the last piece of the puzzle out. "You're Mandalorian!" she half-yelled in equal parts surprise and exultation, smacking her open palm onto the table. "Pardon my language, but why the shab didn't you say so?" she asked, looking at him half-accusatorily half out of genuine curiosity.

She was convinced of it now. His Mando'a, his Verd'goten, for shab's sake the truth had been stating her face all evening and she hadn't even realized it. Then the thought finally hit her, was he...ashamed of his heritage? Not thrilled with the idea of running another Mandalorian with differing beliefs? They would both explain why he chose to spend his time hanging around with Jetii even if they were the most unconventional Jetii that she knew. Haran, that had been the only reason she got along with them.

"I'm afraid I may be a little old-fashioned," he admitted, "but I'd be honored if you showed me how you keep your skills sharp."

"Are you kidding," she asked, still staying in basic. "How can I not," she asked rhetorically. "Waitaminute," she let out all at once as her brain caught up with her. "Just two people training, right? Then...uh, yes," she said, sounding more relied that indeed that was all it was. She drowned the breath of relief she almost took in the remainder of what was left in her glass at this point.
