Faction Villains/Arcs/GMPCs

So, as you’ve probably noticed we’re pretty decentralized and self-directed around here, which was intentional. I think factions thrive best when a multitude of people of leading multiple storylines simultaneously because it’s what interests them.

However! I also recognize that it takes time to build up to that point and that, especially early on, some more direction can be vital to getting people actively engaged and invested.

So, I was thinking maybe we create some faction opponent NPCs or PCs if people wanted to help drive more normal faction narratives. For this, I want to get y’all’s ideas! Especially for ones that can complement and strengthen our main themes.

I’ve had two ideas so far:
-A Corporate Sector type muscling into the Outer Rim. (Maybe get in touch with Darkwire people? Since they had something similar with the Denon Corporate Authority)
-An old-school Legends Imperial Warlord group (Zsinj maybe? Or Pentastar style?)
-Maybe some of the Legends Outer Rim Dark Side sects?

Other sort of NPC groups include some big trade/shipping companies (yes, bigger than Tillian Family Enterprises which is not nearly as big as some of you seem to think :p), Terminus Free Republic, maybe something that’s a nod to psychohistory and Asimov’s Foundation?

What are your thoughts? Ideas? Any you’d want to explore and build up on or be involved with? Think this is a bad idea? Want something totally different?

After chatting with some folks on Discord, I'm happy to start working on an antagonist-sort of group. The current concepts are:
  • Neither Jedi nor Sith, but elements of both (very Dark Jedi, tbh)
  • Wealth through both taxes and crime
  • A bit of militarism, a bit of vigilante
Basically, a strong force that believes themselves to be neutral, but are generally on the bad side of things. Also there was a request for evil monologues which I am 100% happy to provide.
Message me here/on Discord (I'm in the Rimward Discord as "Redd | Jaeviko" with input and ideas, because I definitely can't do this alone!

I'd love to include some of the Darkwire folks if they were interested! We could easily include their factions theme into some of the Outer Rim worlds and groups out there. Since they've gone minor, they haven't had a great deal of time in the spotlight so if we could help them while also helping our own Faction's activity, that'd be a best-case scenario!

Really dig this idea, especially with Darkwire folks getting involved. Give them a shout out in the Chaos Discord Server?
  • An old-school Legends Imperial Warlord group (Zsinj maybe? Or Pentastar style?)
While some might think it cliche, it's pure Star Wars style in terms of content we've seen in Canon. Remnants of Imperials hiding out in the Outer Rim Territories pursuing hidden agendas in a bid to create a greater Imperial power/influence in the Galaxy.

We could even include the New Imperial Order in these stories, either as a third party or a direct connection to the Remnant Group in the Outer Rim.
  • Maybe some of the Legends Outer Rim Dark Side sects?
Jaeviko Fitzsix Jaeviko Fitzsix seems to be on to something here which has me intrigued! Force Sects are always good for the Force Users on the board.

The only downside to this is for those not playing Force Users, which tend to be our target audience in terms of Smugglers, Pirates, Tradesman and etc.

We do have the Church of the Force, the Wardens of the Sky, the Judges and etc so it's def going to be good for many, just not all.

Oh yeah, I definitely want something that everyone can be in on. I guess what I was trying to express was that they weren't directly leaning towards one alignment or the other.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not against it at all (My main is a Force User - Caedyn Arenais). It's great that you're taking the initiative here, and I'd love to see others in our Faction doing the same. I'd be working on something if I wasn't swamped.

Hello, yes.
While I can say I am not a part of darkwire who will love this idea when shown, I will gladly put my hat into the ring of recurring bad guy should the need arise.

I am game for anything really, knocking a convoy to steal its goods. Knocking a convoy just to skew prices elsewhere. Stealing your corellian whiskey and scuffing your freshly buffed starships. And maybe some fun spaceport stuff also. Just be sure to keep in mind I'll pick your brain with 20 questions to help find an end goal for the both of us.
That being said, I won't be bringing huge raiding parties, nor will huge convoys or anything remotely military be approached by myself in wild space. Business is much easier to conduct when you aren't dust.
(This is Sasmay Cull/NE-1/cadre of other characters for reference)

Tbh, the League is a bit of a cliche salad tossed together and thrown in. So a somewhat cliche Imperial Warlord is perfect fit! :p Although in this case it’s been a long time since we’ve seen something that’s not more heavily influenced by the Fel Imperium, which is something I think we can probably run with! And yeah, a Dark Side sect could be tricky for a lot of characters, which does add to the narrative tension, but I also had maybe the Blazing Chain in mind. Dark Side pirates, so still still plenty for our spacers to handle in conjunction with our more esoterical ones! But with Jaeviko Fitzsix Jaeviko Fitzsix sort of taking point, we can definitely shelve any more ideas for when we need them! And getting Darkwire people involved with a sort of CorpSec could defintiely be a good idea!

I think there may have been a translation mix up. Terminus, the Star Wars planet, is a direct reference to Terminus, from Asimov’s Foundation. It’s already there. We can just add one little touch to make the allusion a little more concrete and maybe get some more interest.

Excellent! That sounds like exactly the sort of antagonist that suits well with the League! Although in this case; the League unions are more than happy to break some kneecaps and skills themselves if people try to interfere, so there’s definitely lots of opportunity there! Jaeviko mentioned casinos, which made me think of Kael!

Could layer it too, though that would add to the complexity and be more of a long-term story. Having the larger group (or multiple even) come in to play initially, rumors start floating around that they're being directed/manipulated by a single entity towards a single purpose, that person comes into view over time. Easy to integrate Force groups in at both levels too if desired. The Force-based groups shouldn't be the main BBGs though, if they're present they should be as flavoring.

All of the ideas are quintessential SW ideas and have been done before, but that's not a bad thing if they're not carbon copies of each other. I'm down for any/all of it.

Oh! That's also a good idea! Layering for a longer narrative, especially if it sort of comes together slowly as different stories develop sounds excellent. Long narratives are amazing. And glad to hear you're down for stuff!

I don't know if it's officially stated anywhere, but there's just too many coincidences for me to think it's not a reference.

Exactly!

So ideas!
1. Jaeviko Fitzsix Jaeviko Fitzsix criminal casino/Dark Jedi stuff.
2. Stuff with Kael Syddi
Between the two, I think that has the criminal/seedy part of the Outer Rim well covered.

Which leaves:
3. Imperial Warlord
4. Something like the Corporate Sector for corporatist exploitation

Also maybe
5. Monopolistic shipping company (for the Free Traders and Merchant-Marine to throw down with)

First Order remnants would be a good candidate for the Imp style muscling in!
With all the history between them and the old Galactic Alliance and Outer Rim Coalition fighting it out in the Outer Rim, that would make a lot of sense! Personally, I'm always down to kick it with the First Order in a good firefight :)

Also! An outline for an idea!

New Enterprise Shipping Combine
A collection of subsidiary companies either newly started or recently purchased by some major Core-world shipping companies working together to build a monopoly on shipping in the Outer Rim, using their money and Core political clout to try and influence local governments in the Core and the Outer Rim.
