The first of the exiles, Karness Muur and XoXaan, the Dark Jedi that discovered the Sith and became the first of the Sith Lords.
The term Exile was first created by the Jedi Order, to explain those Jedi that fell to the Dark side of the Force. These fallen Jedi were categorized into Dark Jedi. The first of these Dark Jedi were Ajunta Pall and his other fallen Jedi; Karness Muur, Sorzus Syn, XoXaan and Remulus Dreypa. Together, they were exiled from the Jedi Order for delving into the Dark side of the Force. The legends say that they wished to share their new found powers and knowledge with the Jedi, but they refused. Exiled from the Jedi Order, it was the hope of the Jedi that their fallen comrades would see the error of their ways and return to them one day as Jedi once more.
It was not to be. Together, they meddled in their new found powers and created an army of assorted dark sided entities and ships, with the corruption of several more Jedi and sentient beings alike. They waged a war against the Galactic Republic and it's Knights of the Jedi Order but were ultimately defeated in the final Battle of Corbos. Truly, they became the term 'Exiles' and were banished from known space, where it was the hope of the Republic and the Jedi Order that they would never to be seen again -- left to die in the wild wilderness of dark space.
In their exile, they discovered Korriban and the species that inhabited it, the Sith. Known as the Jen'jidai to the Sith that they enslaved, Ajunta Pall became the first Dark Lord of the Sith. His remaining followers in the form of Karness, Sorzus, Xoxaan and Remulus became Sith Lords and the remaining, unknown disciples that had followed them in their exile.
And it was because of these men and women, exiled from the Jedi Order, that the Sith Order was born; and consequently, the Sith Empire that now threatens the galaxy...

Thousands of years after the Exiles came new forms of Dark Jedi, which became the generic term for Force sensitives merely aligned to the Dark side of the Force, yet were not Sith. Some were greedy men, in pursuit of schemes and plans not on a grand level as a Sith would be, whilst others served the Sith like the Dark Acolyte's under Darth Tyranus. Other Dark Jedi would serve the Sith under Darth Vader's tenure as the Sith Apprentice to Darth Sidious, whom were used to track, murder and/or assassinate the survivors of the Great Jedi Purge.
In modern times thousands of years after Sidious and the apparent end of the Order of Sith Lord's came Darth Axurion and the Dark Jedi whom served him. More so, other Dark Jedi have continued to serve the Sith Order and it's great Sith Empire as servants, assassins and other nefarious uses that a Sith may use such people.
And so they're two distinct differences between the Exiles Ajunta Pall and the disciples that followed him to Korriban; and the Dark Acolyte's that served under Darth Tyranus and by extension, his Sith Master Darth Sidious. It is said that a Dark Jedi cannot think on the grand schemes of the Sith.
But if they're two distinct differences between opposite Dark Jedi, then there must be 'Exiles' and then mere 'Dark Jedi' as seen during the reigns of Darth Pravus and Darth Acaerus.

During the reign of Darth Pravus, several Sith were exiled from this Dark Lord of the Sith for apparent weakness that he could not tolerate; and after his reign came Darth Acaerus, who exiled Vilox Pazela and Malik Vastra for not complying with his demands for territory and military might. Later, Sorahn Viscusz whom had disappeared from the Sith Order years earlier would reemerge once more as a self proclaimed Oppressor of the Dark Jedi; and then the Sith Master Sylence Ank'hu, whom would become an Overlord of the Dark Jedi too.
These exiles gave birth to the modern era of 'Exiles' -- Dark Jedi that had the grand schemes and perspectives of the Sith Order, not on the mere level of the Dark Jedi which had served the reigns of Sith Lords in the years before; and these gathering of exiles, in their grand ideas, sought about a retribution to destroy the Sith Order and in that destruction, enslave the remnant as the original Jen'jidai had once done.
Little of these 'Exiles' remain. Large portions have taken their positions as Sith Masters, Sith Lords and so forth in the Sith Order. Others, such as Sorahn Viscusz and his Jen'jidai title Oppressor Sacrothyss exist out there, in the vast galaxy, waiting for their time. Whilst Acaerus survived the second Almania Uprising made by Vilox Pazela, the first Overlord of the Dark Jedi and these 'Exiles' are thought to be dead or converted once more, lays the darkest secret in the galaxy. But in this secret exists the Jen'jidai Order -- an order of Dark Jedi that seek to enslave the Sith once more and, in the image of their forefathers, create a new Dark side faction.
