Exactor-class Cruiser
"Rather than perhaps crudely - and, to be frank, stereotypically - fashioning
a prow mounted superlaser, we should look to alternatives."

- Vice Admiral Remus Adair Remus Adair

ADVANCED SYSTEMS
STRENGTHS
  • Above Their Weight Class: Exactors are capital-killers - executioner ships, as they're sometimes called, or linebreakers. Where Imperial III-class Star Destroyers have a kitchen sink approach to weapons, with something to fight every kind of foe, Exactors specialize heavily in siege-grade weaponry. The power of their main guns can shred shields and annihilate armor, even on vessels that would typically tank cruiser-grade fire with relative ease. They are also sufficiently well-shielded and armored to withstand return fire from capital ships - at least for long enough to inflict their damage.
WEAKNESSES
  • Slow and Specialized: Exactors are built to win fights against capital ships, but the same traits that allow them to do so also cause them to lose fights against cruisers and even frigates. Slow and unwieldy compared to the average cruiser, an unsupported Exactor can be swarmed and overwhelmed by ships of equal or smaller size - sustained heavy fire will overcome even their substantial defenses. Their main guns are meant to shoot at big targets, and the mega-turbolaser struggles mightily to accurately hit anything smaller than 1,500 meters. They have smaller guns to bring to bear, but they're frigate-level at best.
DESCRIPTION
When Darth Solipsis's Galactic Empire conquered the Core Worlds in the early 10th century ABY, it found itself at war with multiple other galactic powers simultaneously. Its enemies were not only democratic societies such as the Galactic Alliance and High Republic, but also Imperial rivals such as the Imperial Confederation and Sith Order. These enemies had powerful fleets with advanced capital ships, including Super Star Destroyers with highly sophisticated technologies or strange Force rituals to protect and empower them. To face such fleets, the Empire needed ships that were able to punch up.

The need for firepower only intensified with the Emperor's decree of vengeance upon Atrisia. Atrisian Commonwealth space was infamous as one of the most heavily-defended fortress systems in the galaxy, virtually impregnable due to the sheer amount of advanced, self-repairing, self-replicating technologies deployed to protect it. The need for a means to crack Atrisia spurred the final stage of production for the Exactor-class Cruiser, a ship built as a shield-shattering, armor-blasting gun platform. The Exactor is built around a colossal fire-linked dual megacaliber turbolaser, a massive anti-capital weapon.

An Exactor is a dagger-shaped vessel similar to a scaled-down Star Destroyer, but dominated by a massive barreled housing along its spine that contains the mega-turbolaser's reactor, cooling systems, and tracking arrays. Its superstructure is bulky and industrial, designed to channel power into its gun at the expense of aesthetics. When firing, the mega-turbolaser requires a brief charge period, accompanied by visible arcs of energy and rumbling vibrations even within the ship itself. A single volley, if it hits and is placed for maximum effectiveness, can gut a cruiser or collapse a city shield generator.

Intended to take on ships that are larger than their nine hundred meters and survive, Exactors boast heavy armor plating and boosted shields to allow them to endure incoming fire while they get into position. This comes at the cost of speed, maneuverability, and hangar space; the cruisers are still typically faster than the capital ships they hunt, but that's not saying much, and each has room for only two squadrons of TIE Interceptors to try to fend off enemy bombers. These are not ships that do well if deployed unsupported; they need escorts to be effective, screening them from frigates and fighter wings.

But if they can unleash their guns against large ships or planetary positions, the effects are devastating.
