Private Ends and Means

The walk to the ship was short but felt like a mile. Like every next step would be their last. Amani’s heart pounded so heavily it felt as if it was about to break free of her chest. Yet nothing came.

They hit the incline. Elise hurried inside, and as Amani prepared to follow suit, the sound of a weapon clicked behind her.

“Turn around. Carefully.”

Suddenly the world was in slow motion. She swiveled to face the figure that spoke to her: the pilot. Dressed in sith uniform, holding a blaster pistol to the padawan’s head. They said something, but it didn’t register.

There wasn’t time to waste. Instinct kicked in. Save herself. Save Elise.

In one swift motion Amani ignited her pike, the red blade swinging upwards and cleaving into the pilot, who fell to the ground with a scream that cut short.

She stared at the body in silence. Dawning horror mounted that was interrupted by the cadre of sith troopers flooding out from the prison entrance, covering the ship’s hull with a hail of blaster fire. Amani ran inside to the cockpit, practically punching in the coordinates to Silver Space with what little sense she had left. The ship followed the command input, hovering upwards before rocketing into an early hyperspace jump. Dangerous, but gone before the prison’s defenses could counter their escape.

Amani shuffled into the ship’s main room with a wild-eyed stare, her fingers gripped tightly against the pike, still glowing red hot. The immediate threat was gone, and soon she was overcome by the reality of all she had done. With a shriek she extinguished the blade and threw the weapon clattering to the ground. She stumbled back before hitting and slumping against the wall, panic attack setting in.
