OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To stop Siobhan prodding me to make this sub. To create an interesting and spiritual means of melding technology and organics. This is essentially a non-reversible method which permanently turns a being into a trapped essence which can then be used. Of course, this can only be used on PCs or NPCs which their writers agree to.
  • Image Source: Here. Image from this site, edited by ‘zbrisguy’
  • Canon Link: Uses elements of Soul Snares and Entechment.
  • Primary Source: Based somewhat on Eldar Spirit/Soul Stones.
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
  • Manufacturer: Eldorai; royalist, separatist and independent.
  • Affiliation: Eldorai writers only with permission of myself or Siobhan Kerrigan’s writer.
  • Model: N/A
  • Modularity: Can use a variety of settings and colours.
  • Production: Limited (Reserved for elite or especially well respected Eldorai.)
  • Material: Gem or crystal, metal setting, electronics, power source.
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • The gems themselves are heavily reinforced and are often specially shielded to make them hard to break. However, heavy attacks or massive ion blasts can disable or destroy them.
  • Each gem contains the ‘trapped’ essence of an Eldorai. The spirit inside is trapped in there, but can be interacted with similar to a shard or enteched individual.
  • Ships, droids or vehicles can be redesigned to house the nested gem to allow the use of the gem’s skills.
Strengths:
  • Resilient. The gem itself is protected with a small shield generator and reinforcement, making them hard to destroy.
  • Skills. The housed essence retains their memory and skills from their life. This can relate to academic knowledge or more practical means such as duelling or commanding units.
  • Extension. The gem allows one’s life force to continue beyond death…though with some notable drawbacks. It does allow one to escape the mortal confines however.
  • Piloting. A key way in which a gem can be used is as a pilot of a ship or vehicle. This allows them to combine the strengths of both organic and machine into a single device. Alternatively the gem may be connected to a droid much like a Shard interfacing with a machine.
Weaknesses:
  • Shatter. Powerful attacks or ion blasts can disable or destroy the gem.
  • Fading. Over time the essence inside the gem will start to lose their personality and ‘humanity’, becoming more machine than organic. Over the course of the decades the essence will also slowly fade away, potentially vanishing before two centuries have passed.
  • Permanent. The reason this process is used only for the dying is that the transmutation is permanent and cannot be reversed. Once the essence is housed in the gem it cannot be removed or restored.
  • Redesign. Ships, vehicles and droids have to be reconfigured in order to house the gem and the machinery which allows it to interface. This prevents a regular organic pilot taking the controls.
DESCRIPTION
The Eldorai have always been a spiritual people, and the strength of their religious beliefs set them apart from most other societies in the galaxy. For them the universe was very much divided into those who followed the light of the Great Goddess and those who did not. Those who worshipped Ashira and the other lesser deities were promised paradise if they lived a virtuous life when they died. Those in contrast who disobeyed Her dictates would be condemned to an eternity of torment in the black pits of Illyria.

All of this is to say that the Eldorai had a clear notion that death was a natural part of life, and that seeking to prolong one’s existence for longer than natural was an aberration. However…there were cases when it could be useful. Those with skills or arcane knowledge might find it hard to pass on their mastery to new generations, and so some means of preserving them would be advantageous.

Therefore, some fifteen centuries before the present day Eldorai crafters devised a way of using the Force (or Sciia as they called it) to place the essence of a dying Eldorai into a gem. This gem could then be used give advice or pilot craft. These were never used much due to the difficulty of manufacturing and the views on the purgatory like existence of those contained within.

Times changed. The Eldorai found themselves thrust onto an infinitely greater stage than they could imagine possible, lost their home (twice) and realised they were outnumbered and outgunned by the rest of the galaxy. In this dire situation, the wisdom of the past was needed more than ever. Those with skills which could not be easily replaced could continue their service for decades longer.

The means to create the gems though changed. The method of using the Force, whilst more effective, was very expensive, hard to achieve and time consuming. Therefore, utilising technology scavenged from Archangel, the Eldorai started using the entechment process for their mortally wounded heroes. The difference with that process is that this was voluntary, and the spirits inside were not tormented, instead they existed in a grey area between life and death.
These gems were less resilient than those made with the Force, though they were still hard to break. Breaking one would release the spirit to the netherworld. Over time a process of diffusion would eventually cause the spirit inside to evaporate after several centuries.

Special vehicles or ships could be constructed to contain these gems, allowing the Eldorai to be pilots or drivers even in death, merging their organic skills with machine tirelessness. However, they could also be used as instructors, lore keepers or teachers. Those inside though did have some free will though which could be problematic if they decided to disobey. Still, as a gem they could do nothing without other Eldorai so it was judged an acceptable risk.
