STRENGTHS
  • Astromech Slot - The E-9/a E-Wing was designed to utilize an Astromech Droid to alleviate minor or tedious tasks from the Pilot. Located externally behind the cockpit, the Astromech is charged with enacting minor repairs, providing additional support, and navigational plotting. During dire emergencies, such as the Pilot being rendered unconscious, the Astromech is also capable of piloting the vessel for a limited distance to reach the nearest friendly vessel or base of operations.
  • Nimble - Designed to provide a fast-moving and maneuverable escort craft, these Starfighters are known for their speed and the ease with which they can execute in-flight maneuvers.
  • Reconnaissance - Designed to also serve as a Long-Range Reconnaissance craft for Galactic Alliance Fleets, the E-9/a comes equipped with multiple Scanner Arrays and Sensor Suites beyond the standard equipment installed on other craft.
WEAKNESSES
  • Minimal Defenses - As the design of the E-Wing retained its focus on speed and maneuverability, other systems had to be sacrificed. This can be seen in the lighter armor plating and diminished defensive capabilities as the operator of the craft is expected to rely on its speed to protect itself.
  • Sublight Drive Systems - The primary drive system is easily accessible and targeted, opening the system to damage, and potentially resulting in the Starfighter becoming crippled and incapable of further operations. Sufficient damage to these systems has also been noted as having the possibility of causing the wing to be shorn off from the fuselage.
  • Minimal Armaments - As a means to ensure the additional capacity for the sensors and scanners that the craft carries as well as provide for increased acceleration and sublight speeds, these Starfighters are equipped with minimal armaments rather than a heavier load-out which is more common for a craft of its size.
DESCRIPTION
The E-9/a E-Wing Escort Starfighter continues the lineage of E-wing Starfighters that were first introduced following the fragmentation of the Empire and establishment of the New Republic, and employed to bolster New Republic Fleets. Maintaining many of the design aesthetics and features of its predecessors, the E-9/a or Model A is considered the baseline in a new series of E-Wing Starfighters that have begun production by Aether Systems and deployed to once more bolster the fleets of the Galactic Alliance. What differentiates the E-9/a from prior models is the inclusion of more advanced Scanner Arrays and Sensor Suites that its predecessors were lacking. This allows the Starfighter to also specialize in Reconnaissance and provide additional information to those Galactic Alliance Fleets in which they are deployed.

However, maintaining a focus on speed and maneuverability has resulted in needing to step back in other aspects. As such, the E-9/a is known to carry a minimal armament consisting of only two laser cannons located on the tip of each wing. Likewise, cutting down on mass, the Starfighter is known to also have lighter armor plating, with the Pilots being trained to utilize the speed and maneuverability of the craft to compensate. Similar to its predecessors, the E-9/a also maintains a slot in which an astromech droid can be "slotted" to provide additional support for the pilot. This allows the pilot to focus on operating the craft whereas the astromech can, in turn, focus on enacting minor repairs, navigational plotting, and any additional support required. Unlike previous iterations, the E-9/a does not require a specific model of astromech which allows for an easier deployment and operation.

Though minimally armed and carrying lighter armor platting, these drawbacks do little to offset the positives which are the craft's speed, maneuverability, and utilization as a reconnaissance craft. However, the E-9/a E-Wing is only the beginning, and even as these first in a new line of Escort Starfighters are beginning to roll off the production line and find themselves deployed through the Galactic Alliance, there are already additional patterns planned and waiting for their turn to prove themselves. For now, the E-9/a E-Wing provides the Galactic Alliance with a Starfighter that is just as versatile as those currently in its arsenal of small craft.
