STANDARD FEATURES
  • Deflector Shields
  • Outrigger Engines: The outrigger engines offer various advantages and disadvantages, detailed under strengths and weaknesses. The rear engines contain landing struts, and rotate slightly to allow the craft to rest on planetary surfaces and landing pads.
  • Life Support
  • Hyperdrive
ADVANCED SYSTEMS
  • Turbolaser Bank
  • Laser Turret
  • Astromech Port
Strengths:
  • Tank: Built with Ultrachrome plating, these ships can take a few hits before internal damage becomes an issue.
  • Outrigger Engines: The outrigger designs permits mounting the twin turbo-laser cannons on the bottom of the ship
  • Fishbowl: The large viewport offers the pilot a widely unobstructed view of the battle around him.
  • Turbolasers: The ship was designed to specifically target capital ships, and was designed around the twin turbolasers mounted on the bottom of the ship.
Weaknesses:
  • Fishbowl: The large viewport at the front of the ship offers an excellent view, but it's also a weakpoint in the design. In fact, many criticize the design as being inherently flawed, and often lethal unless the pilot is wearing a vacuum sealed suit.
  • Outrigger engines: While this does allow for higher manuverability, the engines are largely unprotected. This makes them an extreme vulnerability against a skilled pilot.
  • Large size: Large enough that it could be considered a small corvette, this fighter is an exceptionally easy target.
  • Struts on the Engines: Two of the landing struts are mounted on the bottom of the rear two engines. In the event these are damaged, the struts cannot extend.
  • Need more Duct-tape: In the event of the viewport shattering, the Life Support system is rendered innert. In spite of this catastrophic flaw, the design was not updated to compensate, and would result in the entire ship depressurizing.
  • Flies like a Brick: The mounting of twin Turbo Lasers has severely reduced the agility of the ship, making it a very easy target.
  • I Can't Shake him: The turret is only forward facing, and thus unable to target anything behind the ship.
  • Sit Still Please: The ship was designed to be an anti-capital fighter, and is useful for nothing else.
  • Getting Toasty in here: Turbo lasers aren't mounted on fighters for good reason. Overuse in a small window will have negative results
Description:
The DX-8 Outrigger was designed with a single function in mind: Twin turbo laser cannons mounted on the belly of the ship to provide superior anti-cruiser firepower packed in to the agility of a starfighter. This project was first initiated by Voph simply to see if it was feasible. The end product delivers exactly what was ordered. With a few drawbacks.

Mounting twin turbo laser cannons meant any part of the ship that was not designed to house shields, sensors, or essential systems was dedicated to heat diffusion, as the cannons output a considerable amount of heat when fired. This also reduces the over all efficiency of the ship's movement capability, reducing speed and agility considerably. To compensate for this, the ship is coated in ultrachrome armor, and fitted with a higher-caliber shield to absorb more hits before it is destroyed. The design was also modified before production finished to include a small turret mounted towards the front of the ship that the co-pilot could use to target enemy fighters. However, the turret only possesses a 45* Angle to either side, limiting it to forward-fire primarily.

Because of the massive monetary investment, Voph only ordered eight ships, intending to assign a single vessel to each of the 8 Octarchy battle groups, and utilize the ship solo, being joined only by supporting squadrons.
