STRENGTHS

Heavy Defenses - Each of these craft boasts improved and impressive defensive capabilities as a means to ensure that the vital cargo, supplies, samples, and information carried by these craft make it to their destination in the heart of the Mandalorian Empire.

Automated - The DSS-19 was designed with many of its secondary and tertiary systems handled by automated systems linked to a centralized computer core managed by an integrated Fondor Droid Mod. This has allowed these craft to be crewed by a smaller complement while also ensuring that critical systems such as navigation and life support remain in the hands of the organic crew.

Increased Maneuverability - The overall design of the vessel emphasized defense and agility, focusing on increasing acceleration and speed at Sublight, thus creating a highly agile Corvette capable of outpacing vessels of similar sizes.

WEAKNESSES

Minimal Armaments - The DSS-19 designed to focus on surveying, exploration, and scientific endeavors causing much of the internal capacity of the vessel being allocated to these systems and needs. This has resulted in a lower armament as additional weapon systems - beyond what was deemed needed for self defense - were omitted from the finished product.

Hangar Capacity - With a design and focus placed on Scientific endeavors and Exploration, much of the internal structure of the vessel was dedicated to Laboratories and specialized components to further support these tasks. As such, the vessel lacks the means to fully support and deploy even a singular squadron of Starfighters or Support Craft, and though it is capable of supporting a single smaller craft, this is often an unarmed survey or support vessel.

Automated - Due to many of the secondary and tertiary systems being automated, the vessel is more susceptible to Ion-based weaponry or EMP-based strikes. Should the vessel be damaged or struck by such weaponry, it has the potential of greatly reducing the overall effectiveness and capabilities of the craft, as the limited organic crew would have difficulty maintaining the larger vessel on their own without the assistance of the automated systems or accompanying droid contingent.

DESCRIPTION

Though the calamity known as the Planeshift has irrevocably shifted the Stars themselves coupled with the continued expansion of the Mandalorian Empire and its founding of the Mandalorian Star Corps had presented Aether Systems with a new niche, one that they knew that their experienced designs and technicians were more than capable of filling. As the Galaxy reels from the Planeshift, and Interstellar Governments expand into regions that have been shifted and changed - old Hyperspace lanes and information are no longer reliable - requiring that a new vessel was developed. While the core of Aether Systems focused on designing a new line of vessels in contract with the Mandalorian Empire, a small group was tasked with creating a vessel that could push the boundaries of the unknown - thus creating the DSS-19 Ka'ra-type Surveyor Ship. The DSS-19 Ka'ra-type was designed and developed to fill a niche and create a specialized exploration vessel to compliment the newly established Mandalorian Star Corps and push the boundaries of a recently shifted and chaotic galaxy. To accomplish this, the DSS-19 was designed to be highly automated, with many of its secondary and tertiary systems being left in the hands of an integrated Fondor Droid Mod - a specialized droid brain - while ensuring that vital systems such as Life Support and Navigation were left to the organic crew. This means that the craft can be crewed and maintained with a smaller contingent, however, this comes at a cost of greater susceptibility to Ion-based weaponry and EMP-based strikes. The vessel also boasts multiple Laboritories, including one specifically focused on Botanical research, as well as housing multiple Bacta Tanks and Stasis Pods - to secure and keep safe sensitive samples gathered during missions. Each DSS-19 is also equipped to deploy a series of Hyperspace Beacons, an addition that was deemed necessary due to the shifting Hyperspace Lanes and diminished confidence in already established routes. However, the inclusion of many of these systems has resulted in cutting in other aspects of the vessel. As such, the DSS-19 is incapable of housing or deploying even a single Starfighter Squadron - though it retains the ability to deploy a single, often unarmed, support craft. Additionally, this focus and emphasis on these scientifice and exploratory endeavors has also seen to a lessening of its armaments, and the craft only maintains an arsenal that was deemed necessary for self defense. However, despite many of these drawbacks and the overall oddity of its aesthetics, the DSS-19 Ka'ra-type provides the Mandalorian Empire with a vessel intended to fill a niche that has likely been overlooked by other manufacturers. While massive warships and nimble strike craft are vital to securing the future of the Mandalorian Empire, the need to understand what happened during the Planeshift and resecuring lost Hyperspace Routes is just as vital.
