The neon-lit billboards of Ethos City lit up the horizon for miles and along with the rain that poured like the sky would come down on your head created a magnificent rainbow across the twilight upper regions.

Arekk's cancer stick provided him with a slight comfort as he waited on the rooftop of a building near where he was supposed to meet with H4LCY0N. This person's appearance was unknown to him, of course, but that conundrum would figure itself out eventually.

Under his iconic leather jacket, the slicer's datapad ringed in alert. A new message. The man reached into its depths to read the incoming communiqué.

"Huh."

He could feel that someone or something was watching him. You were always someone's target in Ethos City, no matter how deep your pockets went or who you were in the food chain.

The clock was ticking.

Brilliant cyan illumination flared in Arekk's face with the drawing of the datapad closer for inspection. No message appeared, not at first, no. The strange, fluctuating shades of blue and cyan swirled in neon line, chasing one another and pulsing impossibly to illuminate cybernetic lifeblood beyond the screen. This mesmerizing dance continued for a moment or two longer, growing and blooming with the finalization of arrival.

And then, at once, all hues meshed together, blending in digital glitch to create a deep, violet shade. And from this overlay, an image, as warped and distorted as it may have been, slowly formed on the screen in the man's palm.

test.gif
The cable-connected figure displayed said nothing for a time, merely watching him as though it could view him from beyond the gaze he doubtlessly fixed it with. Series of coded cosmos rained down the front screen of the visored helmet concealing the majority of the woman's face. Just beneath the faint, bluish glow of her shimmering features, the same cascading code from her glassy, reflective visor flowed in flickering pulse.

Should Arekk have been attentive enough, perhaps he would have noticed the reflection on her visor displayed something which resembled a grid of screens, each hexed to a different shade of cyan or teal. Reality was distorted heavily by H4LCY0N's appearance, or so it seemed- was she a mere hologram, or was she tangible? A vexing question worth inquiry, no doubt.

Finally, pink lips parted, and a digitized voice oozed from the speakers of his datapad like molten gold:

"Hello, Rabbit." The A.I. hummed her greeting, and the corners of her lips curled upwardly in an offered smile. "Surely you have solved my greatest puzzle by now. So, tell me-" Her head tipped to the left, and then the right, as if she could see beyond each of his shoulders and to the sky, "-is it warm or cold rain?"

A toothy grin formed in his face almost immediately at the sight of H4LCY0N on the screen of his flickering datapad.

"I'm glad that you found me." He replied as the rain poured heavily on him, a single strand of hair trying to get into his eye but huffing it away. "Should feel proud to have solved the puzzle. It wasn't easy."

His blue pools tried to decypher each and every feature underneath the girl's visor, almost like a jigsaw puzzle, but it was too hard to differentiate her from an hologram to a real person. Regardless, Arekk was expressing overwhelming happiness due to the fact that she was communicating with him.

"It's cold."

Arekk felt it through his veins, underneath the comfiness of his fine leather jacket, from his head all the way to his toes. That cold embrace that only Ethos City know how to provide.

Ethos City was nothing like the others. It was the city of pioneers. The city of dreamers. A city of undercurrents where not everything is as it seems. The city that has no boundaries and that will stretch as far as the eye can see.

The city of opportunists. The city of dreams where Corporations shapes the thoughts and desires of the entire population.

It felt like home no matter how much you hate it.

"When do I see you in the flesh?" The slicer inquired trepidatiously. "I want to show you something."

The melodic resonance of chuckle hummed through the speakers of the datapad, distorting the visual feed for a brief moment. "Your trail was most satisfying to chase, for that, you have my admiration. And, the fact you uncovered my designation and managed to route through the outer layers of my encryption, well, my adoration perhaps; as suspicious as I may have initially found it."

The tilt of her head brought her face centered forward once more, and in the reflection of her visor, amongst the trailing data, Arekk would see himself as though he were standing there plain as day. Was it a virtual reality?

"You are not what I pictured-" H4LCY0N remarked first
, leaving his question hanging in the air for the time. "Cold rain..." her voice trailed abruptly and she turned her head sharply, focusing on another HUD for a moment. Augmented fibers were apparent in the place of fleshed musculature curling up to her jaw. "It has been some time since I have felt cold rain-" A finger uncurled from the bottom of the frame, held aloft on augmented segments to ask an unspoken question. A moment, please. She was multi-tasking, or so it seemed.

Though as quickly as she had been distracted, she seemed to refocus, turning her attention fully to him once more. "In the flesh?" H4L could only cant her head to the left with the process of that question. An answer was gleaned from the myriad of data swirling about her banks and offered up with a tone mimicking playfulness: "Perhaps sooner than you may think if what you discovered is truly what I was able to decipher. The programming is unmistakable, as I am sure you figured already; it is a near-identical match to my own. Which... is how I am going to deduce you were able to find my trail."

A hand raised from the bottom of the frame to curl cybernetic fingers against the edge of her exposed jaw and it was with a strange, unnatural sort of grace that she leaned into her palm comfortably. Vein-like lights flickered amongst the metallic portions of her hand and forearm, pulsing slowly with the same hue of neon cyan that had claimed his datapad seconds before her appearance. "I already know the answer, but, I am intrigued... what do you think it is, Rabbit?"

Brushing the rain droplets off his leather jacket, Arekk leaned in closer to the datapad to inspect H4LCY0N's visor for a brief second but to no avail. Something in the back of his head screamed to keep looking but he didn't want to be rude.

"What did you think I was?" In the obscurity of the Darknet you're nothing but mere ones and zeroes, a calculation. He was none of that yet. "The rain is calming. I like it."

H4L was right on point regarding what Arekk was able to uncover, albeit not all of it, but it would require more than a holomessage meeting to achieve anything of purpose.

Something valuable for her was stored within the confines of the building the slicer was looking at from afar, he intended to help her though it wouldn't be easy.

"I am not entirely sure how to answer that question. I'm afraid I don't have much information other than that, my deduction skills reach as far as the eye can see."

He paused for a brief moment to glance back at H4LCY0n through the datapad, another smile surfacing on his face that went from ear-to-ear. He felt elated, in a way, to be talking to her. To help. That she had found him as it wasn't an easy feat.

"Whatever's in there I know it's important to you. It intrigues me."

"What did you think I was?"

The A.I considered it for a moment, just one, and delivered him her answer: "The same as the others who have reached me before; a greedy codeworm chasing fringe rumors in search of bounty. But... you look nice." Her jaw lifted from her curled hand and she turned, oscillating as if resting on a pivotal plane. Now, Arekk was staring at her profile in the small frame. Her visor fed back into an intricate helmet and connected at the base of her skull was a cinch-cable twisted into place and locked with ringed clasp. The modest stretch of spine he could see had similar, but vacant docks seemingly embedded directly into what would be perceived as flesh.

Both of her hands lifted, revealing much of her arms and shoulders, which at-a-glance looked just as cybernetic as her hands and neck did. "The rain is calming, I would agree. I believe it to be my favorite weather." H4L responded to that statement too, as she reached to do whatever it was she was after. Shimmering white letters etched across her visor, arranging themselves in string sequence- hands-free coding, now wasn't that something to envy?

Metal fingers extended through her digital space, curling around some extrapolation of data drifting around her, and snaring it to draw close to her chest. Suspended there it remained, barely visible as cubic, flickering light filtering through her caged fingers. "May we go somewhere secure that I can connect to and project?" She asked, face still tilted down towards the hologram suspended between her hands. "This would be much easier to show, rather than tell- and..."

Processors whirred, compiling the appropriate way to respond to his final assessment. "Yes. It is something of import to me and I have been searching for it for many cycles," H4LCY0N turned herself back to face him properly, nurturing the data still, "hence my partiality to agree to this meeting." She smiled, "I won't hijack your system, I promise."

"I appreciate your honesty. You're not too bad yourself."

There was movement on the street-level and Arekk was putting himself in danger if someone spotted him on the roof so he'd get down promptly to reach his NX-249 Airspeeder that was parked in a dark alleyway nearby, connecting the datapad to a custom-built panel near the rearview mirror.

The airspeeder's dashboard ignited in unison with the engine, a set of lights powering one by one as they gave power to the small vessel that carried the slicer from point A to point B all the time.

He had retrofitted the airspeeder with top of the line technology, screens and ports to connect and download/transmit data in real-time; a slicer's wet dream.

"My apartment's not too far away. It's the safest place we can go." He replied to H4LCY0N in regards to her inquiry. It was her best shot. "And my personal terminal's there too, anyways."

But without further ado, Arekk lifted up the airspeeder and joined the rest of the air-traffic to maneuver his way through the neon-lit skyscrapers and flashy adults-only advertisements flashing in every direction to his apartment on the 'nicer' side of the city, perks of living the high-life in a past time.

"I trust you not to. Don't ask me why."

H4LCY0N chimed another musical laugh, shaking her head slightly with his remark, and uncurling a hand from the bytes she clasped to wave in playful dismissal. "Oh nonsense, you are going to make me blush." As the slicer carried her about, she tilted her head this way and that, gazing around him to soak in the sights and atmosphere in the exclusive way she was able to; visually. "This city... it has an unusual pulse to it." The comment was soft, a mere thought cast between lips to release it from memory, and motioned without acknowledgment required.

When the datapad was connected to the panel, the screen surged with brightness, flaring brilliantly as the distortion and grainy haze obscuring her image were lifted, and the connection to his tech strengthened. "Nzzz-nice ship," she offered after the temporary disruption cleared and she was there once more in crystal.

"My apartment's not too far away. It's the safest place we can go- and my personal terminal's there too, anyways."

H4L nodded in understanding, finding it a bit difficult to decline given the fact that he quite literally held her fate in his hands. Of course, what he didn't see just off-screen on her transmission was the orbiting hexagonal code she had written since her last reboot and kept close on hand in the event of an emergency. A kill switch. "Your apartment? Alright. I won't snoop too terribly, though I will confess to you now, my criminal history is burdened by curiosity." A smirk flashed across her lips.

"I trust you not to. Don't ask me why."

"It is a trade, Rabbit. I entrusted you with my data, now you entrust me with yours. Basic exchanges, no?" The woman on the screen leaned back to swipe a glowing, cybernetic hand through space before her, tenderly closing her holoscreens. Code strung across the front of her visor and reformed the atmosphere around her gradually. "I hope you don't mind if I borrow your speeder's environmental sensors for a moment... some data are better gathered directly than written." She proceeded on, assuming he understood what she was hinting at well enough, and the rapid-fire lines pouring across her visor's horizon fired more quickly with the hashes procured from the ship beneath them.

The reflection on her visor shifted, morphing to resemble his own view, gathered from the proximity sensors on the front of his airspeeder and the colors of the streaming sky traffic rushed by her. Coded droplets trickled down, splashing in hollow mimics against her form. Content with this, H4LCY0N sat back and fell into a quiet appreciation, soaking in the limited sight such programmed wizardry could offer her. "This... is nice."

"As dark and mysterious as it is, Ethos City is quite something else."

That much he knew. Ethos City proved to be a difficult place to live for those that couldn't see beyond, corporations ran what was thought to be a 'democratic'-ran planet. It was no secret among the common folk but some if not all of them preferred to turn a blind eye to such things.

Arekk understood H4L's necessity to fully adapt herself to the coded enviroment of his airspeeder thus giving her full access to its network. Whatever she needed to do she was able to with complete free will.

"Basic exchange, you're right." He replied quite entertained while smiling at the screen, nodding in approval. "There's not much to snoop in my terminal. If you know who I am, you'll probably have already ran a background check. My record's known to an extent if you know where to look."

The vehicle came to a halt in front of a medium-sized garage door that promptly opened as soon as Arekk hovered infront of, inviting the speeder within and closing itself after entering. It was dark in there but not for long as the slicer opened the side-door that led to his comfy, warm apartment/penthouse.

His balcony overlooked the neon-lit horizon but the clouds and the heavy rain made it difficult to see anything.

"You're in."

"Everyone has history. It is true, I did review yours, I found it... intriguing." She was honest still, even as she teased him with his own choice of word. She took in the sights, twisting her head around her artificial environment to soak it all in with what limited data she had available. It was certainly an environment she had not encountered before, though there was some level of aesthetic appreciation hidden away beneath the visor she donned.

"You're in."

"Thank you kindly. Standby." H4L hummed as more scripts washed along the front of her visor.

And just like that, her image fizzled out from his datapad, leaving the screen blank.

The holoprojector system anchored to his wall illuminated and raised, moving along its track slowly with its initilization. Projector lights swiveled on their axises, configuring the proper alignment to handle the data fed to them. Colors bled from their lenses, forming the polygonal framework to serve as base for the greater hologram- rendering it within the living space instantaneously in 3D. And slowly, the finer lights joined their greaters, pivoting vertically to structure and lay the greater polygons of H4LCY0N's artifical form before him.

A woman standing approximately 1.7 meters tall with a lithe frame rested before Arekk, hands cupped before her to cradle the bytes she had cached for share. Across her body, cybernetics and seemingly organic parts meshed and collided effortlessly to create a nearly tangible representation of the mind-boggling code written only to represent her existence beyond binary and designation. Her connection helmet was still secured to her features, as were the litany of cables threading into the various ports at the back of her head, the triceps of her arms, and the flanks of her legs. Whoever she was, H4L was fully connected into the networks she roamed.

Color washed over her, replacing the cool shades of cyan with pearly flesh and blackened steel cybernetics which illuminated along various portions with a bright blue. And just as he stood there, so did she. After the rendering of her shell was completed, her consciousness was to delve into it, and this much became obvious as the familiar code started its trickling descent down the front of her visor and beneath the pale hue of what little flesh was exposed, following hidden synthetic vein to fade beneath flesh as mimic lifeblood.

Finally, a question appeared along the front of her visor:

H4LCY0N_ARE_YOU_HERE Y/N? ://

It flickered for a moment, left unanswered.

But then-

H4LCY0N_ARE_YOU_HERE Y/N? ://

The A.I slowly tilted her head up with the fade of her input and smiled, shifting her weight to a hip as a hand released its hold on the cached data it clasped previously to wave at him in gentle greeting.

"Hello, Arekk."

"Hi, H4LCY0N. Good to see you."

Arekk was lost in deep thought as H4L connected herself to his network and worked the inner machinations of ones and zeroes to cast herself as a 3D entity of sorts, something thought unimaginable for the common mind.

"Get yourself acquainted with the network." He said while pointing at the functioning terminal near the holoscreen close to the balcony. "There's information about the building I showed you earlier in there, go through the blueprints and whatnot. I've tried my best to compile intelligence on what's there, the only thing I know it is heavily guarded. For what? I don't know. As I said, something important for you."

Kicking his shoes off before wandering deeper into his apartment and throwing the leather jacket over the coat hanger by the kitchen, Arekk began preparing some stimcaf to kickstart his night.

It was a routine he followed to the heart, it gave him focus and allowed him to calm down.

"What do you think, huh?"

"I think it is... cozy." She hummed, glancing down as weight swayed and she stepped off to almost glide across the floor. "You should dry off. I would hate for you to catch a cold on my behalf." The projectors pathed along their tracks, following her with her stride across the loft to join him in the kitchen. The hand still supporting the hovering data swayed off to the side, moving away from him. "I'm just going to borrow this... excuse me..." She reached out, tenderly curling cybernetic fingers around his right wrist to draw his own synthetic hand towards her. The touch likely sent a little, tingling jolt through his cybernetic limb as it hashed with her code. "Hold this for me, will you?" Gently, the arm lofting the gathered hex came back around and angled to pass the hologram into his own hand. Her touch lingered. "Thank yoooou."

Then, she stepped away, moving over to the console nestled by the window. A glance was offered it, but then she gazed out of the window, hesitating in her mission simply to admire the view. "Okay Hal... focus." Fingers flexed by her sides, touching the tip of each to the pad of her thumb. "Forgive my distraction, it has been some time since I have been rendered this way... much less seen so much beyond binary." The artificial intelligence passed to the terminal and stooped. Tentatively, a synthetic finger pressed a key. The resulting 'clack' earned an enthused giggle of delight.

However tickled she was, she set to work, bringing her account online to a physical terminal for the first time in years. Fingers danced across the keyboard rapidly, inputting string after string once she had dialed through his encryption to establish her own. Extra security never hurts. She dared not take a risk so close to what it was they were after. "Now then. What you have located, my dearest Rabbit is something that was stolen from me years ago."

H4L's head turned towards him, though her fingers kept their rapid, breakneck typing, "My body."

"That's always a funny feeling."

He laughed as the jolt of their palm-to-palm connection was successful, Arekk couldn't help himself but watch in utter awe how fast H4L worked. She was something beyond ones and zeroes, almost a perfect creation of artificial intelligence. Surely he didn't see her that way, though.

"You have to be fething with me." The slicer concealed an ear-to-ear grin behind his stimcaf, eyes widening as the revelation kicked in. "That explains the around the clock security in the facility, I was right this whole time but I just couldn't bring myself to say I was."

The fact that Arekk was going to be able to give H4LCY0N her very own freedom in a body form was impressive in its own. He was going to help the A.I in any way possible regardless of the consequences, despite knowing so little about her something in the back of his mind told him it was the right thing to do.

She deserved it. Freedom, peace, to feel the rain.

"We're going to need a complete analysis of the building, its security systems and how many goons are there. It won't be easy to infiltrate and retrieve the body, we'll have to be stealthy otherwise we'll have half of Ethos City on us."

Playing with fire in the city that never forgives was a death sentence. Arekk might have written the book of bad ideas but H4L wasn't afraid to quote it.

"I've been scouting the place for days. These guys were better trained and better equipped than anyone I'd seen out here and I seen some mean karkers in my life."

If things got out of hand then some poor bastard, quite literally, on the graveyard shift, will be wondering why there were more bodies above ground than below.

Fun.

With another rapid-fire series of inputs, music swelled in the loft, emanating it seemed, from the hologram herself. The cyberoptic lights scattered across her frames pulsed in time with the rhythm of the bassline. Now, it was time to focus. "The funny thing about that is that I have access to the network, I could never locate all of the hubs, though. You quite literally provided the piece I have been missing."

A slight frown tugged at the corners of her lips, drawing them down as she straightened up and took a step back from the terminal. Hastily, she drew the blinders over the balcony doors, smothering out any prying eyes which possibly could have been watching. "I can open all of my HUDs at once so you can help me look through the network. We will need the access control logs, any time signatures we can find with employee designations, as well as SECURE-TRAK pings if they still operate with them." She spoke like someone who was a bit too familiar with the workings of this company.

More strings of code raced across the front of her visor and she found the center of the room.

C:\user\guest_H4LCY0N:\> OPEN_HUDall
processing_cmd;

With an outward thrust of her hands, code rushed through the air, projected by the hasty efforts of the device seemingly anchoring her in The Real. Seven holoscreens in total rose around her in a circle, each one with a single open command line with blinking cursor at the top.

cmd_executed}

"I will designate these three to your charge. You have access to interact with them. Or... you can work on your own terminal, the choice is yours. Find the access control logs and employee IDs-- I am unsure how far back their cache goes, though I suspect it won't be particularly far. You may have to brute force it." Her hands overturned and extended towards him, palms cupped together expectantly. "And... I'll need that back for my portion of the workload." Her lips pressed together, pursing in thought, "I will say that I am unsurprised they have held it for so long, or at least the data poured into it... perhaps they have an idea just how persistent I can be." The A.I. snickered, tilting her head towards the right as her unseen gaze lingered on him, "Are you really sure you wish to help me with this? I would have just compiled the data and sent out a job listing across the DarkNet; you have already done so much."

Risk assessment calculations rushed across her visor out of habit, determining their odds of success. These snappy equations explored every conceivable possibility she could consider, combing through each one meticulously to account for human error and possible variables. She kept this to herself for the time however, deciding perhaps it was better not to jinx it.

"I will use my terminal. That's where I keep all the fun demon programs."

Arekk then proceeded to transfer the three holoscreens to his very own computer terminal, tapping away at the keyboard with unmatched speed. His work was cautious yet quick, encrypting and bypassing every single piece of security to achieve what was needed.

Bruteforcing wasn't his forte so he'd try several methods that had proven more beneficial during his career as a slicer, not only did he learn from the best netrunners in Ethos City but had perfected his technique through serious training that would harness his expertise.

"I've been able to locate the employee IDs for your perusal. Their network really sucks, I thought they'd know better. Access control logs have been uploaded as well."

The holoscreens turned off on their end and Arekk spun on his seat, blue pools settling on the A.I's with unrivalled assurance.

"We're going all in."

Holographic arms stretched before H4LCY0N, twisting at the shoulders to thread fingers between one another and push. As he set to work, she did as well, pulling the data she had passed to him and reforming it between suspended hands. Fingers beneath the hex flicked apart quickly, scattering the bytes across the four holoscreens remaining before her.

Hashes unraveled, rapidly spilling line after line of data across each of the screens hovering in the impossible space:

She focused on these encrypted, imperfect strings, processing them at break-neck speed, despite the sheer volume of the data itself. Perhaps it was a good thing she had already compiled it for review. The fingers of her left hand touched the surface of the second display to her left and sharply swiped down, eliminating the strings to only focus on three; the site information was not necessary for her to construct what it was they needed to see, or what it was she desired to tap into specifically. With this sharp motion, the various cables fixed into sockets along her form illumated more brightly with the sorting and addition of the data to passive memory regardless.

H4L paused in her fluid motion, both hands fluttering over the central holoscreen humming just before her. Obviously, she had found something that had made her attention shift, though, with most of her expression hidden away by that greedy helmet, it was nearly impossible to tell what sort of mimicked response this revelation created within her. The A.I.'s fingers flexed outwardly, moving in a wave, then curled in on themselves to press against the pads of her palms. "Look at that...." She uttered dryly, tipping her head back to better gaze upon what lay before her, "You were right. I am seeing over twenty SECURE-TRAK pings, and that was just within the last four hours. Their patrols are patterned, however. Look-"

The hologram poised one hand to the far left and its twin to the right, bringing them together swiftly. The lights of the holoscreens obeyed, breaking into source code and compressing into a shimmering cube suspended together between her palms just as the last had been.

The woman moved closer to him, "-see." Her hands split apart, scattering their combined and rearranged findings together and expanding them into a three-dimensional space that hovered in the void of the room. Now, a polygonal outline hummed between them; a cyan, digital framework for the structure they sought to infiltrate. A series of virulent red blips flashed at numerous points along the five floors, two of which were above ground. There was no deviation to the scattering of the twenty blips, in fact, even the order they flashed in remained the same entirely.

"Human error." H4L grinned with the folding of arms beneath her bust. She scrutinized the coded map, causing the visor she donned to illuminate with wavering code. Additions bloomed in the light before them, adding noteworthy marks and points to the diagram. Camera positions, access control doors, servers- all highlighted by a different color. "So. There are multiple approaches available with this system, though one is far easier than the others."

The A.I. looked beyond the hologram, fixating on the man sitting across from her. "I suppose that does not account for how vengeful I may be feeling, however."
