Tall and slender, Renata would once have been considered pretty, but years of hard-scrabble life and a devastating injury resulting in the loss of her left eye has put more mileage on her than her years would suggest. She wears an eyepatch to cover and protect the injury. She sports long, honey blonde hair, usually kept in a messy tail.

BIOGRAPHY:
Renata started her life as an ordinary person. She benefited from no family name or connections. In truth, her upbringing was perfectly middle-class in all respects. She was born and raised in Cloud City and lived there most of her life, attending university there where she obtained a bachelor's in agricultural sciences, then a master's in urban planning and development, before finally obtaining a doctorate in ecological sciences. She was recruited out of university by the First Order's burgeoning democracy. She rose through the ranks to become Director of the First Order Urban-Ecological Division, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Development. Her specialty was in integrating recycling, agriculture, and anti-pollution technologies into the city design of First Order urban centers. Some of her plans were used to adapt to far-flung cities founded on newly-settled First Order worlds.

Everything changed when the Ssi-Ruuk returned to Dosuun. By this time, as Director of the FOUED, she split her time between the capital of Avalonia and ongoing projects. It was sheer bad luck that she was in the capital when the scales hit. At first, she attempted to evacuate with other government employees, but as things fell apart and the situation became more desperate, she was caught up in a group that sought refuge in Garden Street Station, the stronghold that had housed the main hub of resistance in Avalonia when the Ssi-Ruuk first attacked. Injured by a Ssi-Ruuk attack during the onslaught, she was laid low for some time as she adjusted to her injury. Luckily, the station had been fortified and reinforced with weapons and emergency food and medical supplies in the intervening years. Hundreds of citizens, terrified and traumatized by the catastrophic assault, looked for leadership. Renata was pressed into service as part of an interim leadership council, reluctantly taking responsibility for setting up food and waste disposal services in the network of tunnels running under Avalonia.

As the days turned to weeks and weeks into months and years, Renata's hope that they would be rescued turned to doubt, then despair, then resentment. Surely, two hundred or so First Order citizens were a drop in the bucket in Avalonia, not to mention the rest of the empire -- and Renata had to assume that if Dosuun was sundered, then the rest of the empire was, too, or would be in short order. But the fact that no rescue operation ever came, no effort to establish contact or reconnect, made Renata question the very government she had pledged her efforts to for a decade. She kept her misgivings quiet, though, so as to avoid sowing dissent in the ranks and keep things together in the bunker network, and merely stewed internally.

Over four years she spent in the darkness of the tunnels, access to the surface all but cut off by the thousands of tonnes of wreckage and rubble that choked the streets. Through technology like grow lights, hydroponics, and fungus tanks, they managed to feed over two hundred people. Sickness and injuries ravaged the population, including the leadership team, until through some trick of seniority and being the last one standing, Renata was the last one left from the leadership council initially set up. She sought volunteers and managed to keep the group coming, eventually settling into an uncomfortable role -- part mayor, part mentor, part jailer, part guardian. Her decisions were not always terribly popular, but over the years of being stuck under the rubble, she had gained the trust and support of the majority of her compatriots stuck beneath the city.

The average First Order citizen's deference to authority helped, too.

Recently, the echoes of loud sounds have begun to reach the bunker beneath the city. The paths carved to the surface for scouts shifted, re-filling with rubble. The surface trembles and shakes, sending dust and dirt sifting down into the tunnels. Something was coming, but Renata Westaway was hopeless to discover what it was. She upped the defense-drills, preparing to make a last stand against the scales or whatever else might stumble across the sanctuary. They would all almost certainly die, but it would be better to take a few of the scales or the pirates or the plunderers or whomever with them.

After all: it was the First Order way.
