Intent: A slightly more modular form of the dovin basal, with a change in utility towards a low powered shield analogue.

Development Thread: If needed

Manufacturer: Legion Yun'Do

Model: Dovin Bastick

Affiliation: One Sith

Modularity: Can couple with other ships/beasts

Production: Mass-Produced

Material: Dovin Basal, Organic legs

Description: The dovin bastick was first and foremost simply a mistake. The Shapers of the Yun'do were attempting to make a more capable and more mobile version of the Dovin Basal. Instead, they got this.

The Dovin Bastick, at first glance, appears to be a bloated and fattened version of the Dovin Basal. Random changes in color and appearance, the likeness is there for the laymen. With little legs on each side, the creature is hardly what one might consider mobile. While it can move, there is very little point, and more closely resembles monstrous waddling. The Dovin Bastick is born and bred outside the flesh of a beast or ship, living most of its life in a sedentary state. Through training, the Dovin Bastick has been taught to attach to the outer coating of any beast or vehicle, even capable of piercing through hardened yorik coral. This zone is demarcated by a sample of musky excrement from a warbeast, the only substance the Bastick seems to have a preference towards. In this effort, it only finds suitable host in creatures the size of thrall herders or bigger and only those know to host the dovin basal.

There, it taps into the blood flow and nutrients of the vessel, feasting as any good parasite does. Here, from this juncture, it performs as a low powered Dovin Basal. Where as the Dovin Basal uses a concise gravimetric beam for propulsion and ballistic interception, the Dovin Bastick is incapable of such long distance projection. Instead, it projects a wider cone of interference that is capable of intercepting smaller ballistics such as small arms and smaller mounted weaponry. However, the strength of this feature stops there, as the diminishing gravimetric field is incapable of withstanding blows from concussion missiles or turbolasers, no matter how fat and happy it grows.

It's for this reason that the Dovin Bastick prefers to embed near a Dovin Basal. However, while the Dovin Basal protects its carrier through a like mind, the Dovin Bastick does not. Selfish and cruel and only out for itself, the Dovin Bastick protects its cone of area, for fear of its own fragility. Luckily for the beast it is on, that typically includes a large portion of it. But where the Dovin Bastick is different then the Basal most of all, lies in it's mind. While it is bloated and obscene, it is smart. It is difficult to overwhelm, casting it's field outward in compliance with the notion of self preservation and survival of the progeny.

Range: Dependent on the size of the Bastick (3 meters is standard for war beasts, this increases with the size of the bastick and the vessel, though the power diminishes with distance and has no known impact on shields).
Size: Can vary in size, just as a Dovin Basal.
Life span: From the moment of biting a host, the Dovin Bastick lives for 8 hours, throbbing happily against the flesh is it consumes. It's during these stages that it begins to produce progeny within its folds upon folds of skin. The Shapers hypothesize that this life cycle is what actually produces the gravimetric fields in such an odd manner. Once the life span ends, the Bastick plummets to the ground and explodes like a balloon, releasing the pestilence of its immobile and sedentary offspring upon whatever planet it exists. What a cruel world, indeed.

Strengths:
[+] Wider area of impact, compared to dovin basal
[+] Can be placed on beasts, meaning that it can be replaced
[+] Prevalent reproduction rate once parasitizing a beast
[+] Immune to the Force
[+] Up to 80% protective and strategic coverage of a beast, decreasing as the size of the beast increases. I.e. a war beast, such as a Thrall Herder or Rakatan can have near full protection but larger vessels/beast and upward would have diminishing coverage, unless modified for resource loss.

Weaknesses:
[-] Incapable of intercepting larger munitions/ballistics
[-] Reduced range and inability to be used for propulsion
[-] Unable to impact shielding
[-] Very fragile and susceptible to death
[-] Overloading a beast or vessel, with Basticks, can significantly reduce performance or even kill the creature.

RESEARCH REVIEW

Plenty of weaknesses for a Replaceable Dovin Basal.

Biggest concern is the amount that can be used on a single warbeast and the minimum size of a warbeast.
  1. What would the smallest beast these could be placed on be?
  2. Can enough be used to offer complete coverage?

1. Basically anything that can in canon utilize a dovin basal defensively. So it wouldn't show up on nuhlrokka or anything, but perceivable on things the size of thrall herders and bigger.
2. I would assume close to full coverage (80% or so), if only due to strategic excrement placement and coupled with prior dovin basals. That being said, I wouldn't expect it to work with the bigger things, not without modification to resources within the ship/beast.
