Strengths:
  • Maneuverable: As being maneuverable in combat is just as important as having a plethora of weapons and armour to protect one’s self from the myriad threats amongst the stars, the Defender II comes equipped with four gimbal mounted engines. These drive units, mounted on the extended pylons, provided the pilot with tremendous leverage over the starfighter’s central mass; allowing for the craft to rapidly adjust its spatial orientation or arrest it’s forward thrust.
Weaknesses:
  • Exposed Propulsion Units: Unlike the starfighters produced by the various shipwrights across the galaxy, the Defender II doesn’t have centrally-mounted, or fuselage-mounted engines that focus on speed. This presents a glaring weakness during combat, that can be exploited by a savvy combatant with a capable vessel; as once the deflector screen was depleted it was an exposed and critical weakness that could ultimately cripple or destroy the starfighter and the operator within.
  • Fixed Forward Weaponry: With an overwhelming portion of its weapons fixed forward, the Defender II was unable to engage any hostile craft without having to forcibly alter it’s forward momentum. While one could say that this design flaw was easily avoided with the exterior thruster nacelles, there were times that the starfighter was unable to modify it’s spatial orientation and was attacked from behind. As there was only a single anti-missile octet stationed at the rear of the starfighter, it was only able to engage the myriad rockets intent on destroying the craft.
  • Low Armament: As the focus on the Defender II was pushed towards having maneuverable engines, rather than an expansive array of weapons that would be commonly found on heavier classes of starfighters, the vessel suffers from a significant lack of combat power against anything other than it’s hostile kin. Without variable warhead launchers, the Defender II is unable to effectively engage larger craft - meaning that it was best employed against enemy starfighters or unshielded targets.
Description: With the restoration of the New Class Modernization Program, the Defender II - Class Starfighter serves as a moderately maneuverable, and small-scale addition to the vast array of products that the Republic Engineering Corporation can provide. While the original Defender was nothing more than a glorified cockpit and extended thruster pods, it’s successor proved to be a vast departure from that previous design. However, with that being said, the craft kept true it’s predecessor’s capabilities and enhanced upon them through the inclusion of extended thrust nacelles.

Although this presented a tremendous weakness when the starfighter’s deflector shields were depleted during combat, the technical architects believed that the advantages that these four drive units provided outweighed the glaring flaw. Because of the engine placement, the Defender II had given its Pilot a proverbial fulcrum in which to re-orientate the vessel’s trajectory with a twist of their wrists. With the change in momentum, the starfighter was able to introduce the sudden advantage of surprise against more conventional craft, as they wouldn’t require a lengthy axial turn in order to come about and engage their targets.

Rather, with the mounted engines, the Defender II was able to flip from end to end in a matter of seconds and bring their forward mounted weapons to bear.

In addition to the double-edged sword of the starfighter’s engine, the Defender II doesn’t come standard with a variable warhead launcher, that would allow the strike craft to engage larger vessels and heavily shielded targets. This was intentional, as the corporate minds behind the project wanted the starfighter to act as the progenitor to a wealth of successors sometime down the road. So, while the initial design was excellent at combating enemy fighters and well suited for light escort duties, it was not meant to attack shielded capital ships or highly defensible installations.

However, despite the lacklustre armament (when compared to superior vessels like Incom’s X-wing) the Defender II would prove to be a powerful, and affordable addition to any intergalactic navy - or planetary defence force.
