BIOGRAPHY:

Centuries before the purge, far in the northern territory of Islimore a Kaiha, Clan Kanaka, formed a dynasty. This Kaiha and the zorathi they were responsible for settled in the harsh lands above The Wolf's Wood in the shadow of The Abolase Mountains just south enough to still have farmable land in the summer months but far more north than any other family had claimed before or since. It was not uncommon to see summer snows on Kanaka lands.
The isolation provided to Clan Kanaka from the mountains in the east, the winter sea to the west and The Wolf's Wood to their south allowed them to remain nearly untouched by The Purge. Of course it was only nearly untouched as every Lupo family shed blood during that horrid time, warriors who were sent south never came back home. Threats from the south were not all that took their toll on Clan Kanaka and those who pledged them their loyalty. Further north still in the land of always winter lay The Wilder Wood or simply The Wilds. The near opposite of The Wolf Wood, instead of pale white trees with blood heads, The Wilder Wood was composed almost entirely of black barked Yronwood trees, whose leaves were also red but so dark that they were often mistaken for black.
It would often be said "Malkor lived in that wood". Malkor was The Dark One it was preached, the one who drove Lupo mad when they refused to turn. Did The Dark One walk those woods choosing to stay amongst the mortals and whisper his madness to them? If he did, he was not the only wolf to stalk through those trees.
The Wild Wolves as they were called on Kanaka land were those individuals who lived in the Wilds. More beast than anything else as that is what was required to survive in a land so cruel, The Wild Ones were often newly formed packs of lupo who had been shunned or banished from their packs to the south. Criminals, murderers, rapists, brothers of alphas who sought to lead their own packs. These were who made up the ranks of The Wild Wolves, they did not farm for the land was unyielding and the cold winds never did stop blowing in The Wilds. They were hunters and raiders and reavers and The Alphas of Clan Kanaka waged war eternal with the marauders even as the menace from the south drove their brothers and sisters into hiding.
Declan Osborne was born Declan of Clan Kanaka, the second son of Durin and Vala. He was born three years after his brother, also named Durin, and the two boys grew up as close as any brothers could. From the moment he could walk Declan would follow his brother everywhere. Those around his father's keep called him "Durin's shadow" as it was impossible to see the older boy without seeing Declan right on his heels. Durin never complained however, the moment the young heir was told his mother had a baby brother in her belly he was reported as telling his lord father "I will watch over him. I will keep him safe."
They broke fast together, took lessons, did their chores and played together, until the age of four Declan would cry fiercely when separated from his brother. It was more common than not to find that Declan had climbed in his brother's bed during the night.
As Kaiha it was the responsibility of the alpha of Clan Kanaka to protect the people who lived on their lands. The greatest threat was the cold, to combat this Clan Kanaka had built Hardhaven a massive yronwood longhouse that during the winter months house as many as thirty families of Lupo, live stock included. In the winter, one's birth counted for little and less when death was so near.
The other great threat was famine. In lean times, if the harvest was not enough or the winter stole upon them too soon, the eldest of the northlands would don their armor, enter The Wilds and go on one last "hunt".
The last true northern threat to the people were The Wild Ones, little more than beasts, these marauders would spill out of the yronwood trees of The Wilds, to steal crop and stock and girls, raiding, burning, killing and raping as they did. To combat these incursions Clan Kanaka were made to be warriors.
The sons of The Alpha were no different. They more than anyone were expected to wield weapons and defend those who paid them fealty. When the time came that Durin first went to the yard to train at arms his shadow as ever came with. Despite being told he was too young Declan who would not be left behind grabbed a stick, walked onto the training grounds and began to whack at his brother. Things continued that way, every day until Declan was old enough to wield a training sword himself.
When Declan was six another child was born to Clan Kanaka, a third son, Dorian and it became Declan's turn to be followed by "the baby". Unlike his brother Declan complained loudly and often about having his own shadow, until one day his mother sat him down.
"Declan." she began "Dorian chose you. Not me, not your father and not Durry. He chose you and now you're responsible for him."
After that day two became three and the alphasons became a pack unto themselves, terrorizing their father's hall in only the way three young boys could. As they grew and their training became more intense they, the two older boys especially, would draw crowds of people who would watch them spar, cheering for one boy or the other as they went at each other with blunted weapons. It was clear the three of them would all be great warriors. They were the pride of the clan, especially of their father.
Durin the elder was like all who had been alpha of Clan Kanaka, a peerless warrior and beloved leader. When it came to raising his children he was stern but never harsh and only when he had to be. He was never shy with his praise, loudly lauding any achievement his sons garnered. He laughed loudly and often, shared mead and meat with his men, every night he would have a new man or woman sit with him at his table so that he could learn about the people he ruled.
"It was not fair to ask a man to die for a stranger." He would tell his sons.
Declan was 9 years old the first time he saw someone die. He rode out with his father, his older brother and a group of guards. They rode to the edge of The Wilds, where he saw a woman chained to a tree. She thrashed and roared and howled, trying to bite or kick any man that got near to her. She had been touched by Malkor, they said. The Dark One's whispers had warped her mind, making her think she was always wolf. She was beyond saving, a threat to them all and so his father took her head. One quick swing of his axe and the snow drank deep of the mad woman's blood.
At fifteen, a year after his brother, Declan had his first transformation. It was pain unlike anything he had ever known, every nerve in his body was set alight as his bones snapped and stretched and reformed. It was pain and it was ecstasy. His change had been made and for the first time he ran with brother, his father and his mother as wolves. No moment since has been half so sweet.
Some few days after his change, he made the pilgrimage to the Wolfs Wood, a practice that had largely been done away with during and after the purge, his clan still followed the old way however and thankfully made the dangerous but life affirming venture without issue.
A year after his pilgrimage, Declan was afforded another honor, he rode with his brother and his father to war. In the yronwood a new enemy had risen, a banished lupo, a second son desperate to run his own clan had given himself the title Anasi of The Wilds and had begun rallying the people of The Wilds to his banner to wage war and take the lands sworn to Clan Kanaka.
As they rode tears fell on the cheeks of Durin the elder such was his joy to see his sons ride beside him into battle. The war as it were was a bloody and brutal affair, lupo killing lupo thinning numbers that were already approaching extinction. In the end The Anasi of The Wilds lay dead alongside two of his sons and a score more. The Wild Ones were no true army and after the fall of their leader they scattered back into the black forest. Declan had suggested they chase after those who fled and put an end to the raiders once and for all but his father said no. They instead went about the work of bringing the dead to The Wolf Wood for their pyres, Kanaka warriors and Wild Wolves alike.
The following year things shifted dramatically for Declan and Clan Kanaka as a whole. His beloved brother Durin announced his intention to marry. It was not the marriage that came as a surprise, for all who would be alpha needs choose a mate but it was his choice of bride that left many, Declan included stunned.
Durin the younger, heir to Clan Kanaka had claimed as his mate the daughter of the short lived Anasi of The Wilds. If Declan thought that his father would put an end to that madness, he was wrong. Durin the elder smiled, stepped from his throne and embraced his eldest son giving his blessing and proclaiming his intent to hand the alphaship to him and his new wife.
"Father!" Declan called. "You would let this wild woman into our home, you would let her marry my brother and name him alpha?"
"As is his right." Durin the elder would say in a voice so cold one would think winter had fallen inside that great hall.
"And of my right?" The boy asked impertinently " I would challenge for the right of alpha."
Declan was only seventeen. A fierce warrior it was true and none could doubt his bravery or his valor but as the second son Declan had not been raised to rule. It was expected that he would remain at his brother's side ever his faithful counselor, his strongest supporter, his best blade and staunchest shield. As such when the boy wasn't training, he could be found drinking and wenching or attempting to commune with the gods. When their numbers were greater he may have been sent to join the ranks of The Draoide.
Stunned gasps and murmurs filled the great hall as the younger Durin looked at his brother with the hurt of betrayal in his eyes.
Angry words were exchanged between the lord and his second born son that day. Neither man knew it would be the last time they would speak for nearly two decades and counting.
Declan, needing to calm the indignant anger that burned in his heart, perhaps against good sense, went to The Wolf wood. Splitting his skin Declan ran for hours hoping the gods would speak to him, would help his father see sense and remain as alpha, he prayed they would tell his brother that he did not mean to usurp him, he only meant to protect their clan.
He ran until the moon went low on the horizon and gave way to the sun. As he traveled back, tired from his run and weary from stress, he was caught unaware and fell into a trap set by The Faythe. He was not killed like many other lupo who found themselves in the clutches of their enemy, but there were many many nights where he wished he had been.
He was instead sold to some passing zygerians who in turn sold him again and again until he became the property of Valturla. Valturla was a Hutt, a mid level mobster on Nar Shaddaa who was best known for his gladiators. One look at Declan's size and he was sent straight to the training yard where he promptly killed one of the guards when his hands were freed and he was able to grab ahold of the man's own club. For that offense he was beaten and starved, forced to live alone in a small lightless cell for weeks, until the day the guards opened his cell.
He did not know why they were there, it did not matter, in a fury he split his skin and savaged four guards before he was brought down. After that day he spent years being treated as an animal forced to fight not in the glorious arena of Geonosis or even Hutta but instead made to fight in the pits of Nar Shaddaa in the lower levels where no glory was to be found. Only blood.
Even amongst the blood and the beatings there were things Declan would be able to look back at almost fondly. Valturla had only one other man he sent to be bled in the pits. Sero Valrel, he was a year or two older than Declan and the two became close, bonded by bloodshed forever when Sero, during a doubles fight, took a blow meant for Declan and was nearly killed. Thankfully for Declan, Sero survived and the two continued to be close, after almost eight years fighting in the pits for Valturla Declan and Sero were both sold again, this time to a wealthy young man from Evaria.
Douglas Nerezza was heir to a vast estate and after his first time seeing grueling blood sport the pits had to offer became infatuated and desired his own combatants, so he grossly overpaid and purchased Declan and Sero. Douglas knew how to own slaves that was true but he had no clue what it took to own pit fighters and within a year Declan and Sero had killed their new master and obsconded with a ship.
Once free and with a ship of their own the two former slaves had to make credits if they wanted to get by but with a bounty and death warrant on their heads legitimate work was out of the question so they turned to piracy.
After a few years the two men parted ways under mysterious circumstances after which Declan joined a mercenary company for a period before returning back to pirating but this time without his longtime partner though it would not be long before their paths crossed again.
In recent times a chance meeting on Nal Hutta has sent Declan's life going in a direction he never saw coming.
