Debate and Vote: Additon of an Official Jedi Attache'

Jack stood before the Senate.

"Gentlebeings all, and anyone else who may not fall into that broadest of categories, I come before you in order to take up the issue of the Jedi presence within the Republic. I have reached out to several Force-users, soliciting their opinions. As you all know, I myself have had little positive to say about the role of the Jedi in politics. They are, by their own admission, neither politicians nor police officers. But to refrain from using their skills and acknowledging their usefulness seems to me an irresponsible waste of resources, especially in these dark times.

"I therefore propose the creation of a Jedi Consulate and formal Attache', for the purpose of providing insight and guidance into Republic events and affairs. Such an attache' would have no voting privileges within the Senate, but would be used alongside our military and civilian advisers to fathom the depths of the problems we continue to face, especially from Force users of factions bent on the destruction of the Republic.

"I thank you for your consideration, and welcome your thoughts."

Well. At least it was something. Kay wasn't entirely surprised by this request, as she had heard [member="Jack Sparrow"] speak about this before. It was just that now he was bringing it up to the entire Senatorial body.

"I agree with Senator Sparrow's proposal. Who better to know how to handle a Force user in any situation than another Force user." But that's all that she would say on the matter right now.

"This proposal has merit, more so than i can begin to simply wave off..." Alexander spoke as he looked on at the other senators, his eyes narrowing on Sparrow as he smiled. "But i ask, who is it you approached. The Jedi are already made tools of war, something we have asked of their order in such a way that directly challenges their purpose. They are peacekeepers and adviser which is why i fully support this idea. But what i am worried about is what happens and who will pick these jedi to serve."

He leaned his chin into his hand. "Furthermore, if the Jedi were to receive a formal place in the senate, there remains the very fear of the Jedi being able to influence our own judgement through other means. DO you understand the many implications and tools of dissent that this attache will insight? We no longer would be able to claim our government is separate from the force entity that supports us. We would be using them as more than the weapons we have sadly demoted them too already by creating politicians of them. I entrust my faith in the Jedi as it is. But is the Republic ready to declare the Jedi an official member of the Government..."

Kay wanted to respond to what [member="Alexander Sannes"] had to say. She really, really did. But it was better for her if she kept her mouth shut on the subject. Not all Force users imposed their will on others. But some people just couldn't get past their fears, and for the most part, she had accepted that.

Sept waited politely before being given the floor and smiled. "As a man who has had his sovereign stripped on prior occasions," he said, tappign the surgical scar on the left side of his bald head "let me assure you, politicians are just as good as wielders of the Force at destroying the agency of sentients, if they are not kept in check. Adding a singular force user to our growing coalition only serves to improve both our military capabilities, and further build bridges with the Jedi Order, whose trust has been squandered by callous usage of military force without their due consideration," he said, gesturing with his hand to some of the Jedi observers who had requested to attend these deliberations.

"The force is of little concern to me, but it matters that we acknowledge the Jedi, not as rulers, but as advisors, seeking to build a coalition for peace. As to the concern that said Jedi should be viewed with caution, while such fears are understandable, a vetting process regarding the appointment of any given Jedi to the position can be be addressed at a later time. Perhaps, Senator Sannes, you would give the proposal consideration, if an amendment were proposed to require a thorough background check and interview process as part of the appointing procedure?" It was small compromise, but it could certainly aid the idea moving forward.

"Senator Sannes," added Jack, "and everyone, there is, to be fair, no way of knowing with one hundred percent certitude that a member of the Jedi Order will not seek to subvert lesser minds with hand-waving and sorcerous powers. Just as there is no way of knowing that a member of the Senate with no Force powers whatsoever will seek to betray the Republic or threaten to turn a world over to the Sith and ignore their pleas for help." Jack shook his head. "We cannot continue to stand in place and say 'We must do something, surely, but not this, or this, or this besides.' I for one am tired of our continued inaction. It's at least partly to blame for our continued loss of galactic status. There are no guarantees in anything, ever. We either take chances, or we resign ourselves to a slow death by political malaise."

This was an interesting conversation. Darion was not overly fond of force users. They could simply, as Senator Sparrow pointed out, force their oppinion of others without non-force users knowing about it.
Stil, there was no denying that this was an element that needed to be taken into consideration or the Republic would easily be overrun by the sith. And this was the last that Darion wanted.

"I was under the impression that the Jedi already held that status in our assembly? But their support for the Republic has visibly diminished of late and so I belive that the honorable senator [member="Jack Sparrow"] has a point." he stated with a dry voice.

"Since the beginning of Republic history the Jedi Order has been our close and trusted allye, in victory and defeat. How can we assure the Jedi that the Repubic is still a beacon of hope and true democracy? How can we make them see that serving the Republic is a just cause?" he waited a few seconds to let the questions mimicing Senator Sparrows suggestion sink in.

"Maybe a symbolic gesture like this. A gesture to install an official post, a post without any real influence in our dealings, would serve to break any mistrust between the jedi order and the Galactic Senate. It must however be very clear that their presence here is to ensure that no mind tricks are used in the chamber and to observe. Nothing more..." he waved forth the coming words with his thin pale fingers.... "... unless we request their oppinion on whatever matter."

"We must be firm and strong in our stance against the ones that wield the force. They are a dangerous lot but to do so the jedi Order do have a role. If they are still interested in supporting the Republic as servants and not rulers."

"Pengalan votes in favour of investigating if the Jedi Order is interested in the proposition.."

Darion returned to his seat as his pod floated back to position.

OOC: I seem to only be able to vote in my OOC account.

Senator Sunblade sat back as others spoke. Everyone made good points, even if they were made out of fear of what the Jedi could do. Khyros was not afraid of such, he was sure he could resist all but the most insidious insinuations. From that point of view, Khyros could see no reason to block the passage of such an inquiry. The jedi had been in this position ages past, and Khyros was all for it.

Looking around, he also saw that there was no reason for him to speak when the votes seemed to be entirely in the way he favored, so he simply voted and sat back to wait and watch.

Senator Caamas did not want to get too involved in the affairs of the Jedi. They were often an unstable force, no pun intended. But, the majority of them were on the side of peace, and many other Senators seemed to share his logic. If this pattern continues, they may have a unanimous vote. The Caamasi didn't even have to consort with his advisors on this vote. The most peaceful choice was obvious. Passively, the small furry senator voted "yea", and waited.

((OOC: I can't vote either. It's a real struggle.))
