Private Death’s Red Right Hand

“Was he now?”

Mauve made a face and sipped more of her hot pick-me-up.

“Not sure I’ll live to let you know,” she muttered, irritated. What’s a woman to do when hunted by an absurdly large mammal with a penchant for trench coats? Maybe name dropping Lina might make Mr. Brokentusk think twice before pulling the trigger. Maybe she should get ahead of the inevitable and arrange a meeting. Mauve filed that away for later.

“Anyway, I will do your job... might have a few already, I’ll have to check my warehouse.”

She pursed her lips in thought for a moment.

“I collect dangerous relics because they’re very expensive, look good behind glass, and bring out all the most interesting people… but what drives you to send me off antiquing, Ms. Ovmar? Why do you want them?”

To say relief washed over Lina at Mauve's acceptance of the job would have been an overstatement. It was too irresistible for her not to take it so she had expected nothing less.

Her head tilted at the question, contemplating for a moment how much she wanted to reveal to her, and knowing her long pause would be enough for Mauve to know that whatever answer she gave was either a lie, or not the whole truth.

"Knowledge, power." She waved a hand dismissively, "whatever fantasy you'd like to conjure in your head as my reason. All that matters to you, is that you get paid, no?"

"Knowledge is power," Mauve said over the rim of her mug, "At least that's what they say, isn't it?"

The notes of relief haloing Lina caused Mauve's head to tilt. Did she really expect her to turn this down, or... was there some other external pressure at work that made this a do or die situation? Whatever the reason, this Sith would not prove forthcoming. At least she wasn't bringing out hot irons or threatening a mental prison of nightmares.

"Personally, I think people are power. After all, who wields the power if not people? And I'd prefer to not be in your bad graces, if I'm being honest. Sounds like a setup for another ten hours in an interrogation chamber."

Mauve sipped the mug and tried to dig for more information. It was in her nature to do so.

"I've heard about these Sith factions. The Eternalists and the Kainates and such. You don't strike me as one of them."

Lina gave a snort of derision. As if ten hours in a detention chamber was the worst that Lina could do to Mauve should she end up on the wrong side of her. She gave a small shake of her head, sipping her own drink. Ignorance for most was bliss, but Mauve was digging. she wanted to know more, as was her nature. They had that in common, a need to know, to now be left in the dark. She was right, that knowledge was power.

"An astute observation." she replied "I am neither. I find non conformity rather freeing actually. The eternalists are elitist fools who believe in a false god and the Kainites cling to the authority of a man who is no longer relevant." Darkness swirled at the edges of her sclera, like ink in water, a betrayal of just how much hate swirled in the Sith. a blink and the momentary slip of composure was gone.
