SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE SSI-RUUK STAR CLUSTER AND THE RISHI MAZE

Calli considered herself a superstitious spacer.

She had heard too many stories at the spaceport bar. Seen too many oddities during her time in the hyperlanes. Lost too many acquaintances to the black reaches of space. Upon hearing that they would be passing by what was informally known as the Broken Vow, Calli went in to action best she could. New to The Quin's crew, she dare not utter anything aloud. She suspected they thought she was mad to begin with.

Carefully she placed two coins in the engine compartment. Thought to bring good fortune and good luck during a voyage. A djucu on a chain was brought out and rubbed before she hung it next to the coins, the gold chain glinting in the dim light. Finally she poured two shot glasses worth of whisky - one for herself, one for any spirits that remained trapped on the Broken Vow. An offering to let them pass.

Downing the shot, head craned to the ceiling as she heard her shipmates move above her, oblivious. Thankfully she was mostly ignored in the bowels of The Quin, so long as the vessel kept running. With any luck, her charms would keep them gliding.

Kairon had come down the ladder for a routine look at the port converter, a datapad in one hand. The Quintessence was a long vessel, designed to carry modular cargo pods down the spine. At the rear of the vessel was engineering and the engines. The front section, in typical corellian style, was a circle.

He stopped on the bottom rung and turned about. He said nothing at first, but Kairon picked up the faint whiff of a spirit.

He had always trusted hands before faces, and something about the way she handled the the ship have him confidence in her work.

"We all good down here?" Kairon asked. His tone was polite, but his eyes did glance at the bottle. He didn't like to make assumptions and it wouldn't be a problem - unless it was a problem..

Another shot was poured and placed on the small sideways crate table she has fashioned herself. Next to it was a camping chair she rescued from a scrap heap while picking up parts. A small, very rustic set up but it suited her just fine.

Head turned as Kairon Rees Kairon Rees emerged into the space. Calli could tell he was appraising the situation. She would not provide an explanation.

"All systems optimal Captain."

Kairon looked at the shot glass she had poured. Then at the crate table with its scorch marks and mismatched legs. Then at the camping chair, which looke dlike it had been hauled out of a scrapheap by someone.

"All systems optimal," he repeated.

He lowered himself into the camping chair, which groaned but held. It struck him that she had not offered him a seat. It was his ship, but she had built a whole corner of his engine room into her own and he had walked straight into it.

He picked up the glass.

"Aye, optimal," he said taking a sip. The whisky wasn't optimal, but it didn't burn.

His gaze drifted while he turned the glass in his hand. He saw the flint of the chain.

"How you feeling about the ship?" he asked.
