OUT OF CHARACTER INFORMATION
  • Intent: To create a unique shipmounted cannon for use on Graug vessels.
  • Canon Link: Railgun
  • Permissions: N/A
  • Primary Source: N/A
PRODUCTION INFORMATION
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
  • Classification: Slugthrower Railgun Capital Ship Cannon
  • Size: Extremely Large
    • 300 meter width
    • 250 barrel meter length
  • Weight: Extremely Heavy
  • Ammunition Type:
    • 30 meter diameter, 1088622 kg (1,200 ton) tungsten shells with depleted uranium core
  • Ammunition Capacity: Extremely Large
  • Effective Range: Extreme
  • Rate of Fire: Low
  • Damage Output: Extreme
  • Recoil: Very High
SPECIAL FEATURES
  • The rail system that launches the tungsten shells runs the entire length of each barrel - this allows the shells to be accelerated to 20 km/s before exiting the barrel. This speed would result in atmospheric impacts measuring just over 100 megatons of TNT, twice greater than the largest nuclear weapons.

  • The turrets come standard as a Quad-barrel system that launches four of the high speed projectils each salvo.

STRENGTHS
  • Due to its nature as a kinetic weapon, the Ironclaw effectively has an infinite range that is hampered only by sensor distance and the target's speed. The projectiles are near impossible to dodge up to several hundred kilometers out - but progressively become easier as the distance becomes wider.

  • With the speeds at which the turret's shell is moving, it can remain deadly even after interception By a defensive weapon. Slag and even dust from a vaporized or detonated shell will still be moving and considerable speeds - able to damage small space craft, Shields or even large hulls.

  • Orbital bombardment with these guns quickly becomes devastating - each shell penetrating 2.09 kilometers of solid earth and creating a fireball 1.8 miles high. 10 km out results in grass, wood, paper, trees and clothing igniting and with glass still breaking at 100 km from impact.

  • The Iron Claw guns are capable of punching cleanly through shields below its own weight class - though technological factors play a strong role in this.
WEAKNESSES
  • The recoil of this weapon is nearly 0 when in vacuum thanks to magnetic nature of launching its projectiles - but atmospheric firing is another story. Being built with ship combat in mind, this weapon was no equipped to handle the heat and pressure generated by atmospheric conditions. Thus, firing this weapon in atmosphere generates such tremendous heat and pressure that the weapon will melt and tear itself apart - likely along with whatever it was mounted to.

  • The size of this weapon restricts its usage heavily - but can not be downsized while maintaining its destructive potential. The power consumption of this weapon is also staggering and a ship not fitted for combat would have no chance firing it. Thus, this weapon is restricted to Extream armament ratings on ships no shorter than 1,200 meters.

  • Due to the unique loading systems required for this turret, it cannot be placed on a swivel mount. This weapon is, instead, restricted to a 90 degree firing arc (only capable of covering on side of a ship at once).

  • While devastating, this weapon lacks the versatility of an energy weapon. It cannot be down powered or fired on a less powerful charge. The loading and charge process for each salvo is several minutes compared to comparable energy turrets.

DESCRIPTION

The Graug philosophy of war has held true as they begin making their way into the realm of space combat. While designing this weapon little care was put into the idea that a miss in combat would result in a rogue projectile floating through space. Instead, The Graug used their decades of learning from Sith engineers to create their own magnetic cannon capable of bring destruction on a scale only the merciless could care for.

Production of the weapon began after the felling of Zygerria, Graug priests and forgers working together to modify the and repurpose the equipment already at the shipyard facilities. Weapons testing began on planet where the Graug took their weapon to an open plain and attempted to destroy a Mesa town where several thousand slaves still resided. The weapon fired successfully but immediately exploded, the recoil creating a crater almost a mile wide and killing its users as well as obliterating the Mesa. To a Graug mind this was a success with a minor setback.

The weapon then began orbital testing where several rounds were fired into the Zygerrian moon. The The Graug delight the weapon did not kill them in the process. Full production began alongside a new design of Graug star destroyer and it now serves as the flagship weapon of the growing Graug fleet.
