The neon haze of Nar Shaddaa never dimmed, never faltered. The smuggler’s moon thrived on excess and decadence, each sector alive with the pulse of credits changing hands.

Of course, such things were beyond her notice. Alana slipped through the endless crowds, though her focus laid not on the uproar that was the crowd. Rather it was something of a spiritual matter. It wasn't the usual brush of danger or the simmering veil of violence that marked every step on this force forsaken moon.

What called to her was something more, something…physical? Something familiar.

Her hand lingered at her side, close enough to the hilt of her weapon, but her gaze wandered instead, searching the shifting currents of the traffic, the dim alleys between durasteel buildings, the glow of sky swallowed by the unending lights of the world. In spite of the chaos that this world brought forth, she could not remove this gnawing at her being.

Darkness. Familiar, wandering, searching?

These words came to her at the glimpse of her mind, filling in the gaps and laying out the foundations of….something. Alana's jaw tightened, pondering wha the familiarity could be. Whether it was just the stain of her past being recalled or something far more dangerous hiding within its veins, she couldn't yet tell.

For now, she kept moving, eyes sharp, unsure where or what this presence could be.

Valaine's exploration of the known galaxy was quickly racking up in the number of worlds she had visited, and it seemed Nar Shadda was closer to her memory of home than most as she prowled its streets and alleys, weaving through the crowds of faceless people like a pale ghost in the mist.

The purpose of her current outing was one of necessity however, for the hunger in her blood called for sustenance. It was a part of her nature that she disliked greatly, one that made her feel like a parasite. But wherever she liked it or not, it could not be ignored.

Tired grey eyes had spotted one figure in particular amidst the crowds, one that seemed to tick most of the Sangnir's boxes when it came to hunting prey, and so she had started to stalk Alana through the busy streets. Valaine moved within the crowds, now and then disappearing from view, but always appearing elsewhere soon later with her tired stare locked onto her target.

She had to wait for her chance, wait for this individual to pass even just briefly into a quiet alley or corner. Sometimes Valaine was a few steps behind, sometimes she was passing right behind Alana before disappearing into the crowd once more, but no matter how far or close she was one thing was certain; she was consistent.

She slides her hands into the pocket of her jacket, as she continues onwards, her expression shifting into a frown. She didn’t look behind her, but kept on ahead. Dodging the people about her was, not exactly second nature, but she recalled enough of her homeworld to know how it was done.

Her mind still mulled over the possibilities laid ahead, as she turned sharply to enter an alleyway, musing on what may be reaching out to her in this moment. The crowds would thin now, trickling down to a scant few passersby. She moved on, musing on her reflections, her life, and questioning if it was wise to try and confront this feeling on her own.

The familiarity grew, and the scene of her mind began.

Walking with her parents, hand in hand, but she couldn’t recall what exactly they were going to.

The alley the Echani walked down, was boarded up, abandoned, and grew increasingly sketchy as she proceeded along. A handful of rough looking figures eyed the woman as she continued along, musing to herself, the memory slowly darkening as she came to a halt. Movement before her being the cause.

Two figures had taken note of the woman now, and moved to intersect her slow stroll.

Alana stood still, and looked the two over, and let out a sigh.

She had a fair idea on what was about to happen.

As Valaine turned a corner to follow Alana into the alley she continued to remain a shadow within the dark as she trailed her. This was going well she had thought; entering a more quiet place as the crowds thinned and grew more scarce. With any luck this would be an easy night for her.

It was then that she noted the looks Alana was getting and her street-smarts knew well enough what was happening. Alana was no longer just her target, she was becoming marked by others. As two figures in particular seemed to take note of the Echani Valaine quickened her footsteps to start steadily catching up to her.

It was just her luck that her target was about to be the victim of some petty crime, ruining a perfectly good hunt, but if anything Valaine was something of a good samaritan despite her nature. With a resigned sigh of annoyance she caught up to Alana and moved to stand right besides her when she stopped. Her tired eyes weren't acknowledging her at all but rather staring straight ahead at the two figures as she put her hands into her pockets idly and slouched forward ever so slightly in a lazy and tired posture.

It might be clear to Alana what she was doing, it was something that happened often enough between strangers; she was playing the part of someone accompanying her to try to get her out of a sticky situation, to make it seem like she wasn't alone. It was a silent offer of assistance to the Echani, one she didn't need to acknowledge.

With any luck the two figures might find a pair of targets a little too daunting, at least if these were just regular thieves that was...

She stared at the two figures, taking in their forms. One was a Kel Dor, the other seemed a near human or some sort. She kept her hands in her pockets, staring at them with her red eyes.

They flinched, and for a moment, Alana thought they might draw blasters on her.

The reason for this soon became clear, as another party stood beside her. She glanced over, raising a brow, then back to the two figures. She shrugged, hands still in her coat.

The silent exchange is underway, as she merely waits for the two to decide on a course of action.

After several tense moments, they seem to decide against it, and continue walking off, leaving the two where they were.

Alana watches them depart, staying quiet, until she knows they are alone. At which, she turns to her new companion.

“Appreciate the assist, didn’t want to take my hands out of my pocket.”

She mused, mind still focused on the distant familiarity that beckoned to her.

As the standoff began Valaine kept her gaze fixated on the two figures, 'Come on, get lost already...' she thought as it continued. But it seemed her luck was shifting as the two figures thought better of whatever they had planned and departed.

She remained stood there as they left and didn't turn to look at Alana until she addressed her. "Hm? Oh... it's nothing really." she commented in a soft tone and for a moment her eyes shifted over the other woman. She had said she didn't want to take her hands from her pockets, so maybe Valaine herself had cause to reconsider trying to feed from her now.

"You uh... Walk into dark alleys alone often?" asked the young Sangnir who glanced around for a moment to confirm that they were still alone. "It's pretty bad for your health, you know?" she added, her own hands still likewise in her pockets as tired eyes regarded Alana.

The pair would indeed get lost, if Valaine's words had any sway on them however, that would have been up to them. Though, they didn't seem keen on sticking around the two ominously looking women. Alana pulled her senses back, letting the Force ripple across her, the echoes moving through, as she focused just on the vicinity. Her new friend of course, caught her notice.

Alana's senses weren't so tuned in, but, either she was misreading her own Force presence, or this woman wasn't that far off the branch from her. "Must be from off world, stepping in like that. Usually how you get marked." She said with a soft smile, turning to face her now.

"I mean, I can do it because I grew up here." She says matter of factly, motioning behind her with her shoulder, refusing to remove her hands out of her coat. Her gaze seemed to have weight to it, there was a fatigue to her eyes, and a weariness about her now as Valaine watched her. "I smoked death sticks for a long time, and....I have a long history of medical complications. I'm lucky to be alive as is." She says softly, tapping her dura-steel toed boots against the ground.

The less said about her past the better, honestly.

She eyed the woman up once more, musing for a moment. "What brings you to this back alley? I'm just revisiting things, myself."

That much was the truth, but, there was a reason this stranger just happened upon her.

If the monks taught her anything, it was that everything happens for a reason.

"Must be from off world, stepping in like that. Usually how you get marked."

Valaine hummed softly, "Jutrand. Not too different I think... But well, I've got a soft spot I guess." she spoke, her tone somewhat sarcastic towards the end as if she tried to pass it off as a falsehood, but she did in fact have a soft spot for helping people she perceived as just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In this case though... It was also more about the thugs getting in her way.

The young Sangnir listened to Alana as she regarded her with her tired grey eyes. Another fellow survivor? She tilted her head slightly at her as she considered the capabilities of the woman once more. She definitely might be biting off more than she can chew if she went for her...

At the question of why Valaine had come into the alley she gave a light shrug in response. "Exploring. I've got pretty good instincts, most of the time. Had to, where I'm from, and it doesn't seem like this place is any different."

She decided to make a move as she turned to face Alana fully, removing a delicate pale hand from her pocket and extending it towards her in greeting. "Valentine." she spoke, using her surname instead of her first.

Her plan was relatively simple, one she had put into practice before: Offer a shake of greeting, grip the hand tightly, grab the other wrist, and then lean in to bite. She found it was a pretty successful technique for keeping someone from pulling a blaster on her, and she'd only been headbutted a couple times doing it... But naturally none of it would work at all if Alana didn't pull a hand out of her pocket to accept the gesture.

Either way the Sangnir was prepared to take her shot.

Jutrand.

Alana’s eyes widened at hearing that planet, her mood shift was noticed immediately. She stared at Valentine, as a pit settled into her stomach. She recalled walking the streets in her trooper armor, seeing the Order out before her, being an arm of enforcement.

She has no intention on going back. Though was it possible this woman was sent after her? Did they know? Did Eira tell someone?

Several thoughts raced in Alana’s mind as she noticeably tensed. “Yea. Jutrand. They just make the best and brightest out of there, don’t they.” It wasn’t a question, but a statement. She knew all she wanted about that damn planet. As she spoke, her gaze remained intently on Valentine as she noticed the extended hand.

Part of her wanted to take it, try to be friendly, not judge someone from the world they came from.

What were the chances she was one of them?

Sadly in Alana’s mind, that chance was high. If she was one of them, then it meant several possibilities.

None of them good.

Her own naivety had seen her nearly destroy herself years ago. All because she couldn’t say no. Because she wanted to be trusted.

Her cheek twitched, red eyes staring into Valentine now. “So, you on the run, or just checking in on someone?”

Her intention was obvious, as she left Valentine hanging there. She wasn’t going to get played again, not like with Serina.

Never again.

Valaine noted that Alana wasn't going to shake her hand, causing the girl to deflate just a little bit with a sigh through her nose. She tucked her hand back into her robes before she glanced around for a moment, and moved just a few steps to lean against a wall as she looked back to Alana. Sure, she'd maybe missed her chance, but she was a patient hunter, there'd be more.

She smirked lightly at the mention of Jutrand and the 'best and brightest'. "Mmhm. Can't imagine I was one of them though." she spoke softly as tired eyes remained on the other woman. Her posture seemed to relax as she tilted her head lightly at Alana. "But, I guess runaway works, no intention of going back there. More just caught up in exploring what the rest of the Galaxy has to offer... Seen some strange places so far, but this one?" she looked up with a hum. "Not that strange at all, all things considered... The locals are a little rude though..." she huffed in light amusement at her own jab, glancing back down at Alana who not only didn't shake her hand, but even kept her name to herself...!

"Hm. I don't suppose I could convince a local like yourself to give me a little bit of a tour, could I? Save me from walking into anymore dark alleys and getting myself into more trouble?" she asked curiously. "I could definitely pay you." The offer of payment... Sometimes it was enough to convince would-be opportunistic thieves to take a chance to lead her somewhere so they could rob her, only to find that they were being robbed of something much more important... She wasn't sure if Alana was an opportunist yet, but it was good to dangle the bait early if she was.

Alana's brow arched slightly at the way the woman deflated, though she didn't let any apology slip past her guarded expression. She wasn't in the habit of offering her hand to every stranger on Nar Shaddaa; especially not one who seemed far too comfortable standing there, reading her. This girl was, something else to put it mildly. She was not a fan.

"Locals don't give tours," Alana said after a beat, voice low and even. "And smart girls like you, should know better than to ask for them." She gives a soft and amused snicker, but was feeling that something was off. Increasingly so.

Who the hell wanted a tour of this damn place?

Yeah, what part of the slums do you want to see today, sweetheart?

"Smart girls don't come here. They mind their own business and live long enough to see another sunrise, and eventually get on a ship and never come back to this hellhole." Her gaze flicked toward the milling crowd, then back to Valaine, weighing her again like she wasn't sure if this one counted as lost or dangerous. Maybe both.

Still, something about the way she carried herself, the humor under that tired tone, made Alana hesitate. She let out a faint exhale through her nose, more of a huff than a sigh. "Listen…if you are keen on walking into dark alleys, you're liable to wind up as a smear on the duracrete. Nar Shaddaa doesn't forgive that kind of miscalculation."

Her eyes narrowed slightly, but there was a trace of reluctant amusement at the corner of her mouth. "Payment, though? That's silly, just means I know you have credits, and gives me a reason to be a real pain in the cargo hold so you give me more." She shook her head faintly. "Lucky for you, I ain't that kinda gal. But, me a few years ago? Yikes, watch out."

She smiles, looking up at a flickering sign that caught her attention, though her hands remained in her pockets. "You'd be better off saving your credits for the flight home. Until then-" There was a pause, a flicker of something softer as she looked at Valaine. Was it pity, perhaps? Or maybe, guilt.

What if this girl wasn't here to hunt her, but instead, running as she had.

That someone had done things to this girl, not unlike her own. That, the Force had brought them together, over this shared tie that Alana might not yet be aware of.

She could take a chance on that, couldn't she?

That was what the monks had said, yes?

Nothing just, happened without reason. It all stayed in the wheelhouse of the Force. Smug bastard that it was.

The pause was only for a moment, but, for Alana it felt longer. So much longer. But eventually, she would speak.

"I can make sure you don't wind up with a knife in your back before the night's out."

Finally, the damn hand comes free from the pocket, offering to shake. "Alana Calloway, your guardian angel for this night."

She had to start sometime, right?

Valaine couldn't help but smile at Alana's words. "Smart girls like me? Don't hear that too often." she spoke in an amused fashion. All this concern Alana was showing for her safety though... It annoyed the Sangnir. Not because she didn't like nice people, but because it made it so much harder for her to feed off of them. The longer a rapport between the two was established, the more difficult it'd become for her to just do what she came to do.

She hummed lightly at the woman's words. She wouldn't even be baited with credits? She had really misjudged her target this time... The pale girl gave a light confused tilt of her head as she was regarded with that softer look. She was no stranger to playing something of a damsel when she needed to... Perhaps that was the right call here?

Then the offer came.

"I can make sure you don't wind up with a knife in your back before the night's out."

It was just the type of thing the young Sangnir was wanting to hear, but now it was all made that much more difficult by seeing this person as a good hearted one. There was briefly a soft pout on her features before they straightened once more, and she reached to accept that offered hand as Alana's name was given. "Alana, is it? Nice name." she spoke, standing up as she gripped her hand.

She was hungry, and that hunger wasn't always going to let people off just because they were kind to her, even if Valaine didn't necessarily want to harm such a person. Her tired eyes seemed to focus sharply on the other woman for a moment. "... Just so you know; you'll be fine." she spoke, giving her the only reassurance she could, and it was the truth, she wasn't in the habit of killing people, not anymore.

With that her hand grasping Alana's suddenly tightened with a surprising amount of strength considering the build of the pale girl, and then her other hand lunged forth with an alarming amount of speed as her enhanced Sangnir traits were put to good use. She aimed to grip Alana's other arm by the wrist, to keep her hand in her pocket, and then lean forward as her mouth opened with short fangs slashing in the light as she aimed to bite the woman's neck. Her intent, if successful, was to feed until her victim fell unconscious.

Maybe they had something in common, lack of confidence in one’s self, perhaps? She couldn’t be certain this early on, but she went to speak before noticing the tight grip on the woman.

Then it all clicked into place. Alana attempted to twist her pocket free hand away, trying to jump and use her weight for an advantage, trying to maneuver to get free as she’d attempt to finesse her way out.

She failed however, to tap into the Force, the additional power she needed to free herself, as the power slipped from her fingers.

She was vulnerable. She attempted, feebly, to throw up a knee, trying to keep distance, but her attempt to jump only allowed her attacker to close the distance; maybe if she-

The thought died, as her neck was bitten into, letting out a yelp that was so silenced as the puncture tore the breath from her body. Her body began to falter, staggering as she attempted to free herself, but again, the power she required just wasn’t there.

Her mind was foggy, she felt weak, her vision blurring-

Was this really how it was going to end? The first time she tried to connect with someone, they go ahead and turn on her?

She felt a flicker of resentment, bitterness, as her vision began to fade.

Was this part of the process well?

Did the Force intend to make her the punching bad of misfortune?

She wouldn’t get to find out.

Not now at least.

As Alana fell, her body movements slowing, crumbling to the very streets she had grew up on.

Perhaps this was part of a larger cycle after all.

Who could say?

The strength of the young Sangnir was frankly absurd for such a frail and slim woman; to be capable of the speed and strength that she was. She put every ounce of it to use as she successfully restrained Alana and managed to connect the bite. Short fangs sank into her neck, and then she'd feel the pressure of a whole row of teeth pushing against her neck. Because of her short fangs such a bite didn't just leave two pinpointed marks, but rather the mark of a whole toothed bite against the skin.

It was a relatively unpleasant and uncomfortable sensation, but one that'd soon be numbed by the loss of blood as Valaine fed hungrily upon her, tasting the blood that filled her mouth.

As she felt Alana grow weaker her grip on her lightened as she brought her down to the ground, and then... darkness.

But it wasn't the end. When Alana awakened she'd find herself sat on the floor, leaned up against a wall. The loss of blood would make her feel disorientated and weakened, but there before her sat upon a small box was Valaine. By the Sangnir's feet was Alana's vibrosword, and in the her hands was her blaster. Valaine seemed curious about the latter, turning it around in her grip, examining it, she even looked down the barrel at one point.

She had decided to not just leave Alana alone and unconscious in the alley, it would have been nothing short of killing her. But she did disarm her to the best of her ability because the last thing she wanted was someone waking up and immediately shooting her. The only weapon left to Alana was her wrist launcher, which Valaine seemingly just didn't recognize as a weapon. An isolated life indeed.

The Sangnir would glance back towards Alana upon noticing her recovering from the bite and she looked at her with a sense of guilt. She reached behind her for a moment and pulled out a small wrapped package and lightly tossed it into Alana's lap. "Eat that. You'll feel better." she spoke. Within the small wrapped package was just a burger.

Valaine kept her tired eyes on Alana but she wasn't showing any sign of aggression or malice, not even pointing the blaster at her. She was just observing.

Pain laced through her skull. Dark voices hummed in the background, cold and methodical. Hands restrained. Wires. Wires in her wrists, in her legs, in her eyes-she could feel it. The jolts, the pulses. She opened her mouth to scream, but couldn't feel her jaw. A name being unraveled, unwound, pulled apart until all that was left was-

Alana shot up, eyes wide, heart throbbing, hand lashing out to strike-

She was somewhere-not lab- not a-

Her mind spun, she felt sick, weak. She went from lunging forward to toppled onto the ground; her head throbbed. Someone was speaking to her, something was on her lap. "What happened-" She started, her memory uncoiling from the last few moments that she could remember. Her vision slowly returned, as she settled her ruby eyes upon Valetine, then narrowed.

This...girl had attacked her. Hadn't she?

There was a tense silence that held for several moments, before Alana managed to mutter.

"Why?"

She slowly righted herself, looking at the offering of food, and gingerly collected it, not eating it.

Her gaze fell to her seized weapons, then back to Valentine.

There was some sort of game afoot, and she wasn't here for it. But she was in no shape to fight, not right now. But, she could talk.

Force could she talk...so that was what she was going to do.

Valaine watched as Alana gathered her senses and spoke, and in response the pale girl gave a slight tilt of her head as dark hair cascaded down over her shoulder. "Why? Because I'm a monster." she answered in something of a sarcastic tone, opening her mouth to reveal her short fangs and gesturing with a tap of a finger against one. "I need blood to survive, and in my experience asking people to let me bite them doesn't really go that well." she huffed lightly in amusement before she looked back to the blaster in her hands. She clearly had no idea how these worked beyond a general understanding of 'pull the trigger'.

"I'm only sorry that tonight it was you. But you'll be fine, you won't die or anything. I'm not about draining people dry." spoke the young Sangnir before she paused to look at the vibrosword at her feet. She picked it up and examined it just like she had the blaster. "You can use these?" she asked curiously as she turned it over in her hand, her finger lightly tracing the edge of the blade. It cut her and she blinked as her blood dripped to the floor as her lips thinned in annoyance. What did she expect to happen? She definitely wasn't the brightest.

Stared at the woman, processing this, and what she said. "I was a monster too, and I didn't feed on blood."

She says flatly, managing to actually sit up, keeping one hand open as she stared at the blaster, processing the last few moments. "You could have asked...I've been around....might have gone better than the stunt you just pulled now..."

There was a degree of disappointment in her voice, but she was trying not to let it linger. This girl had problems, clearly. She watched Valentine fiddle with her weapons, glance back at her, then back to the weapons. She gently reached out with the Force, focusing on the blaster, ignoring the distance. It was a metric, but not solid. Everything was connected, from the air particles between herself and her attack.

It was all in her mind. The monks had shown her that, it was just all in the mind...

"Yeah, I can use blasters....and the swords...I grew up with them."
She admitted, wincing as the blaster would shake in Valentine's hand, vibrating, pulsating as if possessed.

Alana felt the pressure within her body flair, strain, pain, it was building now. It was foolish to try this after what just happened, but-

Where Valentine once held the blaster, it vanished. The weightlessness of the weapon now gone, as it was held in Alana's formerly open hand.

Though the Echani nearly toppled once it was done, panting as she held the weapon, sweat starting to seep from her forehead. She felt like she was going to be sick, but she didn't aim the weapon. Rather, she let it settle down beside her.

"Don't...play...with these...they're...dangerous..." She trailed off, closing her eyes, and willing the thudding of her head to stop.

Hopefully this girl didn't take the chance to stab her now.

"You could have asked...I've been around....might have gone better than the stunt you just pulled now..."

Those words seemed to get a light chuckle of amusement from the Sangnir as she shook her head in response. "Hi, how are you? Can I bite your neck and drink your blood?" she spoke in a jesting manner with a smirk, "Doesn't work half as well as you'd expect..."

She looked towards Alana as she spoke of the weapons, "Never fired a blaster before. Never really had a chance to." she replied, she had barely felt the blaster in her hands shake until suddenly... It was gone. She looked down to her hands in an alarmed state to see its absence, and when returning her widened tired eyes to Alana and seeing her with it, the young Sangnir seemed to panic, her calm and almost careless attitude immediately disappearing.

With an alarming amount of speed she picked up the vibrosword from the ground and held it in both hands as she backed away from Alana, holding it in a manner not unlike young padawans and acolytes were taught to. There was a fearful expression in her panicked stare as she watched Alana, Valaine hadn't even learnt to deflect blaster bolts and she wasn't even sure the sword could, so the weapon certainly presented a very real sense of danger to her.

Even though Alana wasn't aiming at her, the situation had suddenly grown very tense. Panicked girls often did stupid things, and something stupid may very well happen soon.

“You do know people donate blood for free pretty normally….could have just explained it, like….there’s species that feed off energy packs, not that weird….”

She mutters, closing her eyes as her brain just throbbed against her skull. The girl spoke about having never used a blaster, which Alana was a little surprised by. She expected with all the war and carnage that seemed to be occurring that these things would be common knowledge by now in terms of operation.

Showed what she knew.

Taking her blaster back though seemed to have set off a reaction, as Alana popped open an eyelid to find the girl standing over her with her own vibro sword drawn.

She let out a sigh, and weakly attempted to slide the blaster into the holster. She used her free hand to motion the girl to relax.

“Relax…you can’t play with blasters….or vibro swords….can really hurt someone.” She remarks, taking in slow breaths now, as her body was recoiling still from that little trick she had pulled.

She let out a sigh, and her hands settled backed down. “Do you even know how…to use that?” She asked gently, her eyelids flickering as she watched the woman hold her at sword point.

Valaine kept the vibrosword prepared, but at the very least she wasn't immediately swinging it towards Alana. "... I hate cold blood. Like... a lot. If it's not fresh I literally gag..." she answered truthfully, something a certain doctor found really annoying about the Sangnir; being a picky feeder...

When she saw the blaster being holstered her panicked form seemed to relax as her body untensed as she breathed a soft sigh through her nose. As a result she slowly lowered the sword into a much less threatening position.

“Do you even know how…to use that?”

She glanced to the sword in her hands. In truth she had a good idea, it wasn't that much different from a lightsaber she thought. But... Letting Alana know that much might give her the wrong impression as her tired grey eyes shifted back towards her. "... I don't have the faintest idea. Pointy end towards the enemy?" she asked in response as she moved back to the box she was sitting on earlier, taking a seat upon it and letting the vibrosword rest at her side.

"Why are you so armed...? If I knew that I wouldn't have tried in the first place..." she asked curiously. Surely not everyone on this planet was as heavily prepared as Alana was?
